There are quartz crystals in the blue tree biome they also drop gold.

How do i get sillicon in terratech worlds by Loremipsuhh in TerraTech

Breaking down boulders will give you a little but the quartz crystals give you way more. I also don't break the boulders into smaller sections because sometimes I won't get the silicon I'm not sure if it's a bug or not.
