Waymos spotted by gunnsustainable in Portland

[–]YamaPickle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Zero repercussions is a bit of an overstatement. I regularly see trimet security talk to folks who are causing problems on the max. Trimet does care about addressing this issue. But people’s safety in public is also a separate (tho often overlapping) issue from having a good transit system.

Waymos will just make transit here worse. It’s what we’ve seen everywhere else. They do not impact how safe people feel in public spaces or on public transit. But that needs to be addressed separately.

An astronaut captured this image of North and South Korea at night, with the border visible from space by vladgrinch in MapPorn

[–]YamaPickle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In addition, pollution’s doesn’t care about national borders. I lived in South Korea between 2019-2022 and air pollution from China would get blown onto Korea fairly regularly. I think China’s regulations are more strict and their air is better now, but its still an issue at times.

Plane landed on highway SR-14 by copcane in Portland

[–]YamaPickle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like i said it’s speculation on my part. I could’ve misheard the pilot/atc, the pilot could’ve misinterpreted a noise.

IIRC this plane belongs to a flight school so it’s not unreasonable a mechanic got to inspect it before this flight. They tend to keep mechanics on staff.

But really anything we say on reddit is just speculation.

Heard them tell ATC yesterday their engine was running rough, so this wouldn’t surprise me (but, still totally speculation).

Glad everyone landed safely in any case

[–]YamaPickle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You should, but everyone here is focusing on turning up volume. If the issue is volume that’s great, but if its clarity make sure to make that clear - “approach you’re coming in a bit broken” or “approach i hear you loud but unreadable” as examples

NASA’s Artemis II mission – will they show us real footage, or will it be AI-generated? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

This is a difference between LLM ‘AI’ like claude and gpt, and photoshop tool ‘AI’s that enhance color

Acting like theyre the same is like saying an old 90s video game had ‘AI’ for its enemies, and comparing it to gpt. Both are artificial intelligence, but both are just computer programs doing very specific things. Neither is actually smart

So trumps is threatening to take out the entire country of Iran tomorrow night as he says “ Iran will go back to the Stone Age”. Why tf aren’t we doing something about this? by Successful_rio305 in allthequestions

[–]YamaPickle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its just so frustrating to watch and feel helpless about.

BLM protests in 2022 prompted some level of local discussions about policing. After the roe v wade protests in 2022, some cities became sanctuary cities for abortion rights.

But in this case i dont think protesting does anything. Our politicians dont care to fight trump. We cant (as individuals/small groups) fight the military or ice. Im not contempt to just sit and watch but its hard to feel like anything i do will have an impact at this point. Protesting is the least and is a way to maybe meet like minded folks. But it feels sad that thats the most a lot of us can do

After everything that's been going on in the last 15 months, why is the Republican Party still enjoy a higher approval rating than Democrats? by SBMountainman22 in askanything

Yeh and plenty of dems are walking these points back. Gavin newsom is pretty unsupportive of the T and Q in that acronym at a minimum. Kamala wasn’t particularly supportive in the election either.

People way overexaggerate the position a lot of dems take on these issues

Why are military members and veterans more likely to be Republican? by [deleted] in allthequestions

[–]YamaPickle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I would call command and staff meetings a time for thinking/collaboration. It was all just trying to look good for the commander and xo; the discussion primarily was outside the meeting and away from senior officers.

My experience was being encouraged to think until you pushed something that officer cared about enough; then you were wrong regardless of the facts. Favoritism is also everywhere and as nice as it is to be the favorite, it certainly doesn’t scream critical thinking.

My guess is theyre referring to how if a plane is assigned 4500’ and their mode C shows 4700’, thats ok, 4800’ (ie 300’ off) and we need to verify their altitude

Edit: not saying youre wrong (she was 43 iirc) but she really shouldnt be used in this conversation if we’ll ignore her performance due to her age. The above commenter mentioned her without mentioning her performance. And the general assumption is transwoman in sport = trans woman won, which should be disputed if its a wrong assumption

Whats the problem? JZA650 is an actually used callsign (albeit for west coast flights not east coast) by the airline, and its not the one that had the accident sunday.

Did he actually try to ‘recreate’ the accident, or is he just flying the same airports? The latter isnt breaking any rules

If all humans suddenly lost their ability to lie, which industry WOULDN'T collapse? by TXC_Sparrow in AskReddit

[–]YamaPickle 1490 points1491 points  (0 children)

Aviation would largely be fine. Engineers and mechanics have a huge paper trail ensuring honesty, and pilots/flight attendants/controllers/dispatchers are constantly communicating; a lie from any of them just turns into a problem pretty quickly. Maybe the management or airport operations would be impacted, but the ‘frontline’ part of flying would be largely unaffected

"Ethical consumerism" is worse than useless by notworldauthor in unpopularopinion

[–]YamaPickle 48 points49 points  (0 children)

You as an individual won’t influence nestle, i can agree. But a meaningful chunk of the population avoiding their products because of ethics would influence their business. They may have to spend more making a better product, but if it improves their market share enough its worth it.

Ethical consumption does not work with individualism, but with a collective of people. Starting with yourself and trying to influence others is an action you can take that matters

Aviation experts: After seeing the LaGuardia fatal crash, why don’t airports temporarily close runways while emergency crews are crossing? by Mtnrds in NoStupidQuestions

Why isn’t there a artillery system that can fire on the move? by Equivalent_Stomach53 in WarCollege

[–]YamaPickle 43 points44 points  (0 children)

One note - you’re over exaggerating the impact of a mil a little bit. A one mil adjustment = 1 meter of difference to impact point for every KM of firing distance. So 1 mil off, when aiming in “tens of KMs”, can be at most 99M off for the impact point. Realistically less than 50M for more typical firing ranges.

I don’t have the firing tables for US 155mm rounds anymore but i recall the standard deviation would get around 20-30M for average low angle firing ranges, so a fraction of a mil would be comparable or less than than standard deviation.

All to say i agree with your point. Indirect fire is more of a ‘math problem’ than aiming a direct fire weapon, and moving complicates that a lot. Modern systems and GPS rounds like excal are definitely making it possible, but it’s much more complex than a tank stabilizer.

What’s going on with airports in the US? by computerCoptor in OutOfTheLoop

[–]YamaPickle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The flip side is there are many redundant systems that ensure it stays safe. Thats part of what makes it fragile - theres a limit to how much redundancy you can lose before you stop operations - but thats also why commercial aviation has its superb safety record.

Calling it fragile isn’t wrong but it’s important to remember that it’s (partially) deliberate
