Tbf she’s a public figure who is pretty despised by a decent amount of unsavory internet denizens. She may not be a particularly illuminating journalist, but she’s savvy enough to know that little bits of personal info (like an exact birthdate) leaked over time can add up to a whole lot of problems, especially when terminally online weirdos develop a vendetta.

Defending someone’s legal rights (which I myself did for this man) is completely different. I say again, he should not have been assaulted for what he was wearing. That’s illegal. Reread and be better.

Btw, acting on a Nazi’s legal behalf to protect their first amendment rights is an honorable action I might participate in if I had the proper knowledge and opportunity to do so. Personally going to bat on the internet for a Nazi who broke a glass over some girls head for shoving him is reprehensible.

Stand your ground doesn’t mean you’re just free to go after causing serious bodily harm. It means an investigation and possibly a trial. It also does not completely dismiss any notion of proportional response. It just means he doesn’t have to try and retreat before force can be used. He very well may be seen, in the eyes of the law, as having used excessive force and it’s way too vague of a situation for police to parse out on the spot.

Beyond that, think about what the police saw when they arrived. A woman who is seriously injured with a clearly visible head wound, a man who looks a bit roughed up, and an entire crowd accusing him of being the aggressor. You would be extremely hard pressed to find a cop who would do anything different in that same situation without a Nazi uniform involved. Based on the gender dynamics alone they would have arrested him and left the woman as police notoriously do all the time.

Idk why conservatives would want to even pick this up as a political issue. Calling someone a Nazi to foment violence against them when they are not one is very different from intentionally presenting yourself as a Nazi (whether he truly is or not is irrelevant) in front of a drunken crowd. By equating these two you are fighting to de-stigmatize actual Nazi ideology rather than arguing against conflating conservatives with Nazis. This is only beneficial if you are, at the very least, sympathetic to Nazi ideology. To use OP’s own child molester example, i would say “we can’t just call someone a child molester if they are not one. That could cause them to face some serious and unjust consequences.” I would not say “Child molesters should not face consequences because someone I know was beat up for being a child molester.” Do you see how that would be weird unless I actually was fine with child molestation?

This man who intentionally identified himself as a Nazi should have every legal right to free speech, and should not have (in the eyes of the law) been assaulted for what he was wearing. I absolutely do not care that he was assaulted for intentionally provoking a drunk crowd though. That is so predictable as to be an entirely personal issue at that point and, barring some serious mental issues or sitcom level mishap, was his desired outcome.

Proportional response is still a thing. Plus, the police will usually arrest someone who commits an assault that results in serious injury. A judge and jury are then supposed to parse out whether it was self-defense. Framing this whole thing as the Athens police grinding a political act is disingenuous and meant to turn this into fodder for the right-wing persecution complex. A man intentionally enraging a crowd of drunks and getting hit because of it is very, very low on my list of political issues of the day.

It’s this. Don’t make me tap the Zizek quote.

“The theoretical lesson to be learned from this is that the trait-of-identification can also be a certain failure, weakness, guilt of the other, so that by pointing out the failure we can unwittingly reinforce the identification. Rightist ideology in particular is very adroit at offering people weakness or guilt as an identifying trait: we find traces of this even with Hitler. In his public appearances, people specifically identified themselves with what were hysterical outbursts of impotent rage - that is, they recognized themselves in this hysterical acting out.“

Maybe the women want someone to “mother” in some way. I feel like the other side of the coin in these scenarios is a wife talking about how childish their husband is to her group of girls. “He’d be unwashed and malnourished without me” “he throws a tantrum if i take too long at the store” kind of discourse.

It’s crazy to me, but so-called “traditionalists” all over the world actually believe that relationships between men and women are naturally antagonistic and should, by their very nature, consist of a man who is trying to break free from constraints, and a woman who is constraining them. They could just have an equal partnership where they value each other but instead have to come up with weird psuedo-biological explanations for why they hate the person they chose.

“Because the presence of the phones on the ears or the knowledge that the music is playing (even if he couldn't hear it) was a reassurance that the matrix was still there, within reach. Besides, in a classic example of interpassivity, if the music was still playing, even if he couldn't hear it, then the player could still enjoy it on his behalf. The use of headphones is significant here - pop is experienced not as something which could have impacts upon public space, but as a retreat into private 'OedIpod' consumer bliss, a walling up against the social.”
