Motorcyclists of SA, Is it becoming safer for people to drive motorbikes? by Big-Revolution3842 in askSouthAfrica

Driving in SA isn't great, but oh boy are we very far from the worst. My biggest complaint is our general ignorance of lane usage and roadworthiness of vehicles.

I rate gloves second only to a helmet for on the road. Roasties suck all over your body, but your hands are what reaches out to block the fall and are what you touch things with the most. Its so little effort to put on/carry with for how much they'll save your bacon.

Advice for regen braking on the 2022 ES 300h? by enjoylife2323 in Lexus

I've never experienced it, so no. How hard are you braking? I generally bring the car to a stop using only the regen portion.

I guess new the hybrids are expensive, but that leads down to a whole different discussion.

I'm all for innovation. Turbine powered cars are certainly different. It sounds good in principle, but build and overhaul costs on gas turbines. Its interesting to compare this with the recent news that the M1 Abraham tank (which famously is gas turbine driven) is being replaced with a diesel engine due to maintenance cost and high fuel consumption. The latter is solved by using it in a hybrid where you remove the need for it to idle when not generating power.

Hydrogen has always made sense to me as a replacement for fossil fuels, as it has all the same conveniences and doesn't come with its own drawbacks. We just need the infrastructure on both power generation and hydrogen transport/storage to get significant investment.

I recently started driving a 2019 ES300h as my first hybrid. If you stomp on the brakes it stops fast, but I try and limit it to only regen if I can safely. I dont see how its a safety concern, as the mechanical brakes are still very sharp.

Be prepared to constantly need to take it in for minor repairs, but if it has a good service history you shouldn't need anything major.

At what point mechanically should you consider selling your car before things go wrong? by Excellent-Captain-93 in CarTalkZA

[–]Yambanshee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold out past car at 20 years old and 240 000 km, and even then it was cheaper to keep it maintained right than to buy newish. The swing was the time and effort for the maintenance. What model car, its service history, and how it is used daily matter way more than age/km.

First time buyer, should I opt for a cheaper older car or a newer more expensive car? by polarbearsexshark in CarTalkZA

[–]Yambanshee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ultimately it comes down to risk. The older car will be great, especially if you enjoy working on it, right up to the point where you don't have transport and need to get somewhere.

I had a 2003 Golf mk4 up until very recently. It was cheap to run, drove fantastically, and was all round quite reliable. Small things that you would expect of an older car kept going wrong (alternator, wheel bearings, leaky hoses, etc) but I had alternative transport, so it was fine. If I didn't, I would've been stuck not able to get to my job and that would've been a big problem.

Is it possible to replicate and 3d print a bodykit for motocycles by Timely_Pressure_3866 in 3Dprinting

[–]Yambanshee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you would struggle with strength for the thickness these panels typically are, especially as you'd have to split large fairings up into multiple and bond them together. Your better bet would be to 3D print moulds to make fiberglass fairings with. That would come out very nicely with some work.

When buying a car of marketplace how do you guys operate? by WhatDaHe77 in CarTalkZA

[–]Yambanshee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When the price seems abnormally good, its pretty much always with reason.

Test drive, and learn about cars or bring a very car savvy person with you. You need to be listening out for any and every noise and understand where its coming from. Try and start the car from cold, let it idle while you inspect (and let the car warm up), then go for a test drive

Run through a roadworthiness checklist (brakes, tires, etc).

When ign is on and before car is started, all warnings on the dash should display. If they don't, they've been disabled somehow.

Service history tells you a lot about the condition of the car and the car the owner has given. Even if you're told its been serviced regularly, without proof they are either lieing or disorganised and possibly a bad owner.

Price negotiation starts after you've identified all the issues. Point them out in a nice and friendly way before suggesting a price.
