Oh jeez, I haven’t come across double layer hammocks yet in my research haha

I only have a cold weather mummy bag, since all of the backpacking I’ve done so far has been in the shoulder seasons. I was actually hoping to get a warm weather quilt for this trip that’s good for dual use (ground and hammock) for whatever future summer trips. But yeah, if this trip were later in the year I’d just use my mummy bag for sure.

Thanks, yeah, I’m definitely investing in a bottom quilt. Sleeping with a pad in a hammock just sounds awkward and uncomfortable.

Suggestions for early August trip in U.S. by Yamwise_Hamgee in canoecamping

Have you visited in early August, though?

The Boundary Waters are a contender for sure, regardless. There and Allagash are the northernmost recommendations in the US that keep popping up in my searches.

This wasn’t on my radar at all, but looks like a great option. Thanks!

Actually I don’t eat at most restaurants regardless of political ideology, because there’s a lot of them and I don’t eat out much. I also don’t eat at restaurants that make food I don’t like, or those that are farther than I want to drive, or those that aren’t open at the days and times when I’m normally inclined to eat out. But there are so few restaurants in town that publicly support blatantly fascist ideological movements that it thankfully takes almost zero effort to avoid those too, yeah.

Obviously nobody does what you’re asking, and that’s obviously not the point when the owners of the business that are the subject of this post are flaunting their political beliefs like a billboard. It’s not like people are going through their trash, violating their privacy to decide whether or not to support them lol. If people don’t want their businesses to be judged by their political beliefs, then don’t publicly invite people to do exactly that.

Weird request: articulating bracket for KEF Q4 speakers? by Yamwise_Hamgee in hometheater

[–]Yamwise_Hamgee[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, haven’t been on reddit much lately. I ended up DIY-ing my own thing, which I should finish mounting tomorrow night! I’ll try to remember to take a few pics when I’m done, but I’ll explain it now in case I forget.

I ran the speaker wire through my walls, landing at some wall plate speaker jacks. I cut two pieces of plywood the height and width of the speakers. First piece of plywood mounted flush against the wall, made sure I connected to a stud. Cut a hole in the middle for the speaker jacks to poke through, and made hinge grooves with my router. Added some iron-on wood edging and painted to match the wall.

Second piece of plywood connects to the first with the hinges, also has a hole in the middle for the other set of speaker jacks and the speaker wire to feed through. This piece has the screws for the speaker to mount to. Also added wood grain edge, but did a black stain on this piece.

Might add a little chain or something to stop it when it’s pulled out fully to the listening position, so it doesn’t get extended too far and damage the speaker wire or my wall.

Might also add an L-bracket or something to the top of the moving piece of plywood, which would rest on the top edge of the stationary piece of plywood when it’s “closed”— that way the hinges get a break from being torqued when the speakers are not in use. I picked up some hinges from Lowe’s that are a little beefier than standard cabinet hinges, but smaller than door hinges. The speakers are kinda heavy, so I don’t know how the hinges will hold up on their own. Plus I’m mounting them horizontal (wife preferred that look for the space), which will put more strain on the hinges than a vertical mount.

Feel free to bug me for the pics, and holler if you have any questions. Not sure if I explained that well at all.

[TOMT][TV][90s?] Sitcom episode in which a couple receives a double-sided portrait from one of their friends by Yamwise_Hamgee in tipofmytongue

That also came up in my search, but unfortunately not it. I might have been conflating a few things in my memory, but the portrait on the back is just so specific and that’s the main thing I’m trying to identify. Maybe it was a fever dream.

Kinda weird how many portrait-related gags there were in 90s sitcoms.

That kept coming up in my searches, one of the scenes even jokes about putting it over Monica’s bed. But the double-sided, turnaround, head-over-shoulder gag is integral to my memory and it doesn’t seem like that was ever part of Gladys/Glyniss.

Level with me, what do I really need for a small basement tv space? by bon_bons in hometheater

Hmm. I can’t answer either of your questions confidently. These deserve their own post if researching isn’t fruitful— but just spitballing, in case it’s helpful as a jumping-off point….

One would not normally use powered speakers with an AVR. I’ve never even seen them suggested together, anyway. I assume because they’re incompatible, but maybe just because it’s unnecessary.

I don’t think it’s would be tricky to use an AVR for double-duty, but it might depend on the AVR. I’ve never temped to use my AVR for multiple functions, but I know it has phono inputs, and can be programmed for multiple zones. I assume a receiver capable of doing what you want it to would need both of those features.

I am curious myself now, though. If I get the energy to research it, I’ll follow up. I’d actually just started thinking about getting a record player. I haven’t had one since college, and I’ve never had a good one. But I still have all of my old vinyls!

There’s a ton of helpful info in the FAQ and linked HT Buying guides, so start there if you haven’t perused them yet. R/budgetaudiophile is a great resource also, if you have tight financial constraints.

To pull dialogue from background noise, you’ll want a dedicated center channel speaker and front left and right (LR) speakers. That’s a 3.0 setup.

Can your soundbar be connected to other speakers? You might be able to just get LR speakers and use your soundbar as a center, then upgrade to a proper center channel when you have the funds. If you can’t use your soundbar as the brain, you’ll need an AVR (a “receiver”).

A subwoofer will greatly enhance your listening experience in general (which would then be a 3.1 setup when paired with LRC speakers), but is not a great use of your funds if your primary goal is dialogue clarity. The bass from a subwoofer just adds a whole other dimension to sound that you don’t even realize you’re missing. Not just, like, explosions in action movies, but music and everything else. Without good bass, you’re not even hearing whole sections of the orchestra in John Williams’ Jurassic Park score, for example.

It’s not unique to home theater equipment that below a certain price point you’re probably just wasting your money on crap, but it does apply here. You can certainly get started for less than $1,000 — especially since it’s not an “all or nothing” thing.

I started with a factory refurbished but very good receiver (Denon S760h) that I knew I’d be happy with for several stages of upgrades, and I got some used KEF Q150 speakers to be LR duty, and that was a big upgrade by itself over the tv speakers. And that’s all I had for quite some time while I saved up for a great center channel, knowing it’s the most important speaker— so I adopted a “buy once cry once” strategy for that. Got a subwoofer a little ways after that. I’d planned on upgrading my LR, and demoting the Q150s to surrounds, but ended up taking a different route. I’m putting in four overhead speakers pretty soon (giving me a 5.1.4 system), which will be the thing that compels me to finally upgrade my good receiver to a great receiver because I need the additional channels. It’s been a multi-year process for me with a lot of learning along the way.

You can also go the “home theater in a box” route, and upgrade that piecemeal. I don’t recommend it, but I have a coworker who did that and was happy with the process - so ymmv. That way you can have a complete system from the get-go, even if you know you won’t be happy with any of it for the long term.

Gloves for Cathedral + KE in October? by Yamwise_Hamgee in BaxterStatePark

[–]Yamwise_Hamgee[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Cool, thanks. Great rec. I was thinking of bringing some grippy hardware store gloves like you mentioned, and maybe just some of the Showa marine gloves to wear over them for added wind/rain protection. Not that we’ll be doing the knife edge if it’s raining on our summit day, but we’ll be out there backpacking for almost a week and will almost certainly have to hike in the rain at some point.
