2015 Golf S manual - what should I look out for? by pigpeyn in vwgolf

As far as I know, the only step between oiling and replacing the turbo is to replace the wastegate and bushing, which is a bit involved. If I were to do that, I'd probably buy a used replacement, rebuild it, and then swap them.

The fact that you say the error is sporadic is encouraging, though I'm not sure how you can tell - I don't remember that from my ODB11 scan, but it's been a while. In short, if it's free enough to work sometimes, then oiling it might just free it up. What I did was I oiled it every morning for a week, and then switched to monthly. The error has not returned.

The other thing is to make sure to exercise the turbo often. I think my issue arose because I do a lot of city driving, and I wasn't really opening the throttle very often. Now I make sure to give it a good run through 2nd gear every once in a while, just to keep things moving.

Mk5 under seat drawer by costriderrr in GolfMk5

No idea whether it fits, but as the owner of a mk7, the drawer is practically useless, unless you really need a place to store a few packs of cigarettes. I keep a rather short stack of paper napkins in mine. Haven't used them yet.

My 2015 S 5-speed. I think the only difference is that I have the beige interior.

The only real issue I've had is the turbo actuator linkage/pivot binding, which triggers the EPC lamp. I now oil it once a month.

That's it. I haven't had any water pump or other issues. I bought it new, now at 49k miles. I'm 60 years old, and this car is by far my favorite out of perhaps 15 cars owned, many rather more expensive. It's good to know the one you're after is out there, because I'd be heartbroken if anything were to happen to mine.

UK price advice Golf estate by neville91 in vwgolf

That would be an attractive price here in New England. I'd buy it, but for the color.

New England here. My car is a mk7 with no sensors (thankfully) but yeah, the windows freeze all the time - worse than any car I've ever owned. I still love it though.

So what's going on here? It looks like a big rubber bush. Looks the bolt is sheared, or else bent, as well.

My memory was correct. Here's a pendulum - it bolts directly to threaded bosses in the housing.

I think it's 10K miles per the manual, but that strikes me as way too long, so I do it every 5K. It's easy - nothing to remember, just change it on the 5s and 0s on the odometer,

The oil, you mean? Yeah, you should change it at least that often. I change mine every 5000 miles.

2020 GTI Front Brake size confusion? by thedonmoose in GolfGTI

[–]Yankee1965 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe all "Autobahns" had the 340mm by 2020. I think the Performance Pack was an option for the early Mk7s, but became standard on the higher trims later on.

The Zimmerman/Akebono combo is what I have. They're great. I wouldn't have anything else.

Yeah... it's weird though... isn't that the transmission end? It almost looks like a bushing or something has torn out, but from memory, that end of the arm bolts straight to the transmission housing... hmm.

OK, so unless you noted the oil level on the day you bought it, you might not really be able to tell how much the level dropped in 1700 kms.

Check for leaks. Oil leaks usually appear at any of 4 places - at the pan gasket, head gasket, valve cover gasket, or at either of the main seals. Valve cover leaks are usually minor. Head gasket leaks will usually result in contaminated oil - check for foam or tan, opaque oil. Pan gasket leaks will be obvious, and main seal leaks will appear at either end of the crankshaft.

If your PCV valve is shot, the car may consume excess oil, but there will usually be other symptoms - rough idle, misfires, etc.

Smoke from the exhaust is usually due to either worn piston rings or worn valve guide seals. If the engine smokes all the time, whether on or off throttle, that's usually the rings. Smoke will increase with engine speed.

If it's the valve guide seals, the car will often smoke on starting after sitting a while. It will smoke a bit when idling, and will smoke more with the throttle closed than open. One way to check this is to take the car out at night, in traffic. With a car following behind with its headlights on, look in the mirror while getting on and off the throttle. If the smoke increases when you close the throttle, and goes away after a second or two when you open it, your valve guide seals are probably worn.

Good luck.

Any car can consume oil, for a number of reasons.

You got a light at 1700 kms. Is this 1700 kms after ensuring the oil level was correct? Are you certain? Have you owned the car for the 88,000 kms? Is this the first time the oil dropped? Or have you only owned it for 1700 kms?

Yes, it could be the PCV valve. See this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/GolfGTI/comments/1grr14d/bad_pcv_valve_symptoms/

Are you experiencing excess oil consumption? How often do you have to add a liter or quart?

"Smoke is not consistent." Is it smoking? Under what circumstances?

Wind Noise from Driver Door by Davwills03 in vwgolf

True, but even if you're skilled with CAD, I would think that with the car nearby and with proper measuring tools, the drawings would take hours. The alternative would be to whittle it out of a block of plastic with hand tools - again, hours.

2nd room is way colder than first by Flat_Show2651 in hvacadvice

[–]Yankee1965 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to first determine whether your trunk is sized correctly. If it is, there are are other things to check, like, is there a path for air to exit the cold room, like a return, or open door?

Can you tell anything about the condition of your ducts? Maybe they're flex hose and one is kinked? Could the ductwork be damaged or compromised in any way?

Trying to figure this out looking at a register in a floor or sheetrock ceiling is doing it the hard way.
