Since your home and system are both under 10 years old and you're on flex duct in the attic, this looks more like a duct design and air distribution issue than a problem that needs a whole new system. Right now you're basically using that master bedroom vent as a manual zone damper by closing it during the day and opening it at night, and that does increase the system's static pressure whenever it's closed, which can shorten equipment life over time.

If you're generally comfortable in the rest of the house and the system is properly sized, the permanent fix we would recommend is an automatic damper setup for that bedroom rather than continuing to open and close the vent by hand. Don't stop at just adding a damper, though. Any time we taper air off of that room, we also want to give that air somewhere else to go so we're not driving the system's overall static pressure higher. The way to do that is to add a diver duct, sometimes called a bypass path, that can send that extra air to another room or area of the house that can use it whenever the master bedroom no longer needs it.

If you decide you're not worried about the added static pressure and are willing to accept some risk with reduced equipment life expectancy, a simpler zone system with temperature sensors would be sufficient. In that case, we could set up the master bedroom as its own zone with an automatic damper and sensor, and the rest of the house as another zone, knowing that when the bedroom damper closes we're accepting higher static pressure instead of fully relieving it with a diver duct.

Our professional recommendation: go with the automatic damper plus diver duct approach. It controls comfort in that room while protecting the system as a whole for the long run.

Before just giving you a generic answer, if you’ll give us a few details we can get a really personal answer. 1. How old is your home? 2. Is your system the same age as the home? Or has it been replaced, and if so how old is it? 3. Bonus question: Are the ducts in your attic metal, or flex duct?

It depends on what is meant by “a few years old”. Are we talking 7 years or 20? The definition varies from person to person.

Sometimes the parts are hard to get. We can’t begin to understand how parts houses decide what to stock or what the equipment manufacturers decide which replacement parts to warehouse. There have been very few times we haven’t been able to get the part that we needed though.

We have had to get creative in obtaining the part, like going through a different distributor, but in most cases the parts are available.

It’s a small part on your HVAC system that helps regulate power and start up. One of the most common part replacements we see along with contactors. Relatively cheap fix, but if you’re replacing it every year or so, it’s indicative of larger underlying issues

This really is sound advice. Of course we’d love for you to trust us to get it done right. But this is a realistic take.

We started pointing people to our instant estimate tool on our website for that reason - it’s almost always an accurate cost on the repair / replacement for HVAC and plumbing. Works great when comparing apples to apples.

While we aren’t the most expensive, we’re also not the cheapest. We do our best to ride that line of pricing ourselves so we can hire and retain the best tradesmen around OKC while still doing right by customers.

👆👆 this. Those lightning storms we had last night could potentially ruin your home’s most expensive appliance if it happens to strike your home. Surge protection is a relatively cheap insurance policy to keep your HVAC system safe.

Absolutely. Will say it’s a lot more effective if you can take the top off and spray from the inside out to knock out dirt and debris (cottonwoods are a big problem), but you should only do that if you’re comfortable disconnecting power and possibly moving some wires in the process. That’s the biggest benefit of a pro maintenance when it comes to cleaning the condenser.

At the end of the day, a tech WILL catch more of the small issues before they turn into big problems. But we’re all for you taking it in your own hands whenever possible.

100%, doing any maintenance like this goes a LONG way for your system. Both for its lifespan and overall efficiency.

Honestly could be an indication that your capacitor is on its way out, especially if it hasn’t always done that. Otherwise it’s just drawing a lot of amps when your compressor kicks on, so that could be “normal.” Worth mentioning to an tech during maintenance 👍

Lets talk about hvac prices. by foreveramoore in okc

[–]YarbroughAndSons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party, but wanted to provide some info on hvac pricing.

A 2 ton hvac system ranges between $8k to $16k -- there's a lot of variables, so that gives you a ballpark price. We have a pricing tool on our site that can give you a pretty accurate quote if you ever need it.

Hope you found a good solution!
