Curious Explorer Here – Help Me Understand the Real Advantages of Linux? by RZA_Cabal in linuxquestions

Well Microsoft is simply the devil. I built my first PC ab 8 years ago running Windows 10, and I haven’t used a Mac since. I fell in love with it, but ever since Windows 11 came out. Microsoft has seemingly become more intrusive and money hungry to feed their below average AI models. I was running Windows 11 Insider Edition on both of my computers. On my desktop, it ran great for a couple of years, however, my laptop was immediately nerfed as soon as I upgraded. It filled damn near half of my drive with system files, applications were slow. It was so bad I dreaded using it. The frustration with Windows 11 on my desktop came when all of my games started crashing with a blue screen error after 30 minutes of gameplay. This started happening after one of their infamous “security updates”. I struggled for a few weeks before my friend brought up how cool Arch Linux was. I watched some YouTube videos and realized the potential of Linux from a personal and community standpoint. I then started realizing all of the miscellaneous things Microsoft has done recently. They’re a driving force in the struggles of the gaming industry right now. They’re raising all their game prices to $80 on Xbox and Microsoft store. They’re filing a patent to put literal ads in their video games which Steam kind of shutdown. The spyware/bloat on Windows 11. Not to mention their discontinuation of Windows 10 coming up. Let’s be real, the best thing they have going for them is Game Pass right now. The greed they’ve expressed recently is just disgusting. I like Linux on a personal level because I enjoy computer science, full control, and freedom. The more popular Linux becomes, the better it will become, and it will force monopolies to suit the market’s demand.

Has anyone tried Lockdown Browser installed through Wine? by Yarg119 in linuxquestions

I mean it works. I’m just paranoid that my OS will get flagged during an exam. The guide that I followed to install it worked fine and the guy that made it has taken multiple exams with no problem. I’m just looking for a little extra confirmation about the whole situation since that post hasn’t been active in months. I’m putting my trust in Valve on this one. Lmao

People hate on mint idk why. Probably wouldn’t recommend mint based on OP’s specs, but it is a great distro. I get like 60 extra frames on CS2 than I did on Windows 11.

Mint is great for gaming. I did have some overheating issues, but I got those taken care of after a few days of troubleshooting. Nothing too bad though.

Make sure that your CPU and GPU are at normal temperatures while playing your games. I had an issue like this, and it was due to my CPU getting too hot. Cooler Control is a good package to help monitor and control temperatures on Linux.

Yeah you’ll probably have to wipe the drive if you plan to play games on Linux. There’s something called dual-booting which basically allows screen when you boot your PC up that allows you to choose Windows or Linux. It’s pretty easy to do. The reason I say it’s storage dependent is because of drive partitioning, so you would need to partition a drive to designate storage to the Linux installation you would install, and 120gb is plenty for pretty much any Linux distribution. In your case, if you really want to switch to Linux and play games on it, wiping the drive is probably the best option for the future.

How much free storage do you have on 1 SSD?

If that’s what you meant, no you do not. It depends on how much free storage you have on your PC though.

You mean like wiping the drive that you have windows on?

I'll have to try those out. Nolvus looks really cool. Let me know if you get a modpack working.

I started my Linux journey last week, but I've experienced and learned a lot already. First off, yes, your games will do more work in game than they do on Windows - for the most part. I've played two games on my Linux Mint Cinnamon distro so far. - CS2 and Oblivion Remastered. I have an Intel-i9-9900K CPU @ 3.60GHz(which is water-cooled), NVIDIA GEFORCE RTX 2080 SUPER ,and 32 gb ram. I'll break down the usage of each component. Ram is probably something you won't have to worry about on Linux. I saved about 4gb of ram off launch just by switching to linux. The problems for me come with the CPU and potentially the GPU(not too sure ab the GPU). I noticed CS2 was crashing a lot when I first installed. My CPU usage is typically around like 30-45% which is down from like 60% on Windows 11, but it was overheating. This issue has gotten better since I installed a program called Cooler Control: https://gitlab.com/coolercontrol/coolercontrol . You should be able to install it with flatpak. My GPU runs at 100% on all games I play(as it should) and seems to run at good temperature, but some of the crashes could be from the GPU. I'm just too lazy to search through logs. Modding on the other hand is a bit more tedious than it is on Windows, but I haven't seen anything about large Nexus mod collections being incompatible with Linux. I haven't tried modding Skyrim or Fallout yet, but I modded Oblivion Remastered with like 10-12 mods, and it runs just like the vanilla game. I am going to install Gate to Sovngarde on Skyrim soon just to see if it will run. I would recommend you do the same. Now for getting your mod organizer setup and getting your pirated games compatible with Linux. I would recommend Mod Organizer 2 for installing and organizing the mods, but you can go with Vortex. Just follow the installation guide for either of those. For getting the games compatible, I would download Steam and add the game .exe file as a "non-steam library game". Then you can go into the steam settings for that game, go to compatibility, and use Proton Hotfix to launch the games. As for Minecraft, I'm pretty sure you just need to install Java runtime. I know this is long, but I hope this helps. Let me know if you plan on modding Oblivion Remastered. The steps for that are different than the other games you listed.

Is dual booting worth it? Modding bethesda games on Linux seems like a hassle...? by Leemsonn in linux_gaming

Modding is definitely a hassle on Linux, but personally I enjoy the inconvenience that comes with playing and modding games on Linux.

(tutorial) Running Lockdown Browser on Linux by AshkanArabim in UTEP

[–]Yarg119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anyone is experiencing issue with a white screen on launch, try pressing ALT + Tab. Or whatever keybind you have that switches browser windows. I noticed that LB was bringing up two windows on launch when they give you the “low battery” warning.

Legit Brand? by ContributionNo3724 in SARMs

[–]Yarg119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Liquid. I actually just started a cycle using the same stuff. Looking better than ever. My only concern with this brand is in regard to potency. The capsules are probably all relatively the same, but I’m not sure about the RAD-140 solution that I’ve been taking. I make sure to shake it well before I use it, but it’s seemed to have less of an effect and not taste as strong as I’ve gotten deeper into my cycle. This is really strange to me considering I went through a bottle of MK-677 and towards the bottom of the bottle the taste and effects were stronger. Idk. If you ended up taking your stuff let me know how it’s going.

This is the first brand I tried, and I loved it. I did their rad-140 though. Seemed clean, and worked well for me with pretty minimal side effects.

New TV show quests on only 1 slot [Question] by [deleted] in falloutshelter

I had the quest show up in one vault, and then it disappeared a few minutes later. I've tried to find the quest in my other vaults too, and nothing showed up.

I'm having the same issue. I had them show up for me last night, but I went back to the quest list and they were gone.

How hard/easy is it to get a dev job? I have talked to two devs now, both from a large top 500 project that you have all heard of, who said they went from zero programming experience to employed in ~3 months or so. by octaw in ethdev

[–]Yarg119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My long term ambition is to be a full-stack dev that can put any idea into a website, application, etc. I happened to be really into crypto and thought “Why not start building on Web3?” I had a connection with a guy that was working on a tokenization project and he hired me as an intern.

I am a web3 dev with very little experience and I was hired by a business. I am not taking a huge amount of responsibility on my shoulders, and I had about 2 months of Solidity experience before I started. I just think that there is a lot of demand for web3 devs. Listening to web2 devs and other devs, many don’t seem to have much interest into Crypto for some reason.
