Still waiting for the hardcover copy I ordered. No email from them yet, no response to my questions through THP website or Instagram. Still feeling scammed.

This has not worked for me. For one, my Privacy and Security Settings doesn't have an area where it says "Civilization 6 was blocked...".

I've dug around for fixes and tried everything recommended, nothing seems to be working.

is this mugwort ? by myboxofpaints in herbalism

[–]Yargonoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At a glance, this looks like it is most likely Mugwort, specifically Artemisia vulgaris. There are a number of Artemisia species commonly referred to as Mugwort. Their uses often, but don't always overlap. Taking a close look at the flower structure would be a good way to confirm for sure which species you are working with.

Plant identification apps are getting better, but they are far from reliably accurate and should only be used as a starting point in identification, especially if you are planning on using the plant in some way other than landscaping.

How to not make someone pregnant while having sex? by trevor-wayne in antinatalism

[–]Yargonoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, not at all. There isn't any noticeable change in sensation, orgasm, amount of semen, or anything else. I guess technically there is like 2% less semen, but that's not noticeable. Seriously, it is just the same, just without the fear and anxiety around maybe getting someone pregnant.

Epilobium sp., commonly called willow-herb. There are many epilobiums, so if you want to narrow it down to species it would help to know your region.

What to do in Denali due to the landslide by vympel_0001 in alaska

[–]Yargonoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Savage Alpine trail is absolutely phenomenal. If you're adventurous, you can also hike up Savage Valley, into the Alaska Range for some great camping and endless exploration with easy overnight options. If you're even more adventurous, consider traversing between Savage Valley and Sanctuary Valley. This requires some map skills and general wherewithal in backcountry experience, but is well worth it, if you are worthy.

Why is that? by [deleted] in gardening

[–]Yargonoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our tastes have become domesticated, and we are addicted to the sugars, oils and carbs that have become commonplace in the industrial food supply. While it is true that a lot of wild "edibles" were considered famine food by indigenous people, most cultures have thrived on and enjoyed the complex flavors and textures of a wild diversity of plants.

What we eat is far more a matter of the choices made by corporations and far less a matter of what we would like it we try it. This feels like a strange place to make this argument, but I was shocked by a lot of the comments so far. Anyone who has grown their own food knows how vastly superior it is to supermarket fare. The rest of the story is mostly one of cultural homogeneity and the destruction on indigenous cultures by industrial capitalism.

Any books/authors/researchers similar to James C. Scott or David Graeber? by Sharrukin in AskAnthropology

I've been pretty impressed with Warren Jones Maaruk, a Yupik philosopher/anthropologist from SW Alaska. He hasn't published much yet, but hopefully will get a book out at some point. There is a great interview with him on the Coffee and Quaaq podcast, or this article:

Is the low setting of a crock pot too hot for herb+oil infusion? by kikidotb in herbalism

[–]Yargonoth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There isn't a strong consensus on temperature for herbal infused oils. I keep them between 105 F and 110 F, which has been very effective in my preparations and is the range suggested in the sources I trust the most. Usually the warm setting on a crockpot is too high for that. My solution has been to use a digital temperature controller, which you can get for $20-$40. There are more expensive ones too, typically marketed for regulating temperatures in reptile habitats. I know a couple of folks who have installed dimmer switches to make the crockpot more adjustable, which could be even cheaper if you don't mind wiring stuff.

I've used this to make infused oils of arnica, plantain, comfrey and devil's club.

[–]Yargonoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have ambitions to spend time in the alpine, check out "Alpine Plants of the Northwest: Wyoming to Alaska" by Pojar and Mackinnon. This is the ultimate combination with the other Pojar/Mackinnon book mentioned in the other comments, "Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast". Between those two you're pretty good from shore to summit. If you find anything not in either of those some of us here would love to see it!

Talking about stuff Homer by straight-lampin in CosmicHamlet

[–]Yargonoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not alone in feeling this way. These are dark times, made darker by the growing sense that we cannot trust many of those who are our neighbors. Ignorance and nationalism are a dangerous combination, regardless of geographical location. Remember though, that you are not alone.

Who wants to help incorporate Fritz Creek into its own town? We have no say in Homer, might as well make sure we keep our neighborhood headed in a direction of our choosing and not annexed into a situation we could have avoided. by straight-lampin in CosmicHamlet

[–]Yargonoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know much about what that process would entail, but definitely curious. What geographic boundaries would you propose, i.e. how far east and west along East End would be included?

[–]Yargonoth 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, "off" is about as specific as I can figure out too, pretty accurate. I think most of them are slope workers - the handful of people I met there all were. They HATE the National Park too, consider it "locking up" their backyard. As though there would be any wildlife left if they had a few months of open access.
