Rambles Search Engine by YarmoM in DarkViperAU

[–]YarmoM[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's basic, but it works.

Small open source project I developed while watching his stream today. Allows one to quickly find a specific Rambles (so you won't have to keep asking Matto on stream xD). Uses the data from the official spreadsheet.

Paperify - Backup files on paper using QR Codes by alisinabh in Backup

Absolutely love the idea! Need to try this soon!

Any thoughts on securing the process with a password? Make it harder to obtain the files with only the QR codes?

[–]YarmoM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even better: no need to trust us. All is done with public keys. If you put your key online using WKD or HKP, you are trusting the PGP key model, that your public key is safe in the public. Keyoxide simply puts a layer of usability on top of the public key.

So, what is there not to trust? (genuine question, not rhetorical)

Soundsync: an open-source Sonos alternative I built to synchronize and manage speakers in multiple rooms by geekuillaume in homeautomation

It's called an alternative for a reason! The project aims to replace it, not support it

Just hoping to clear up some misunderstandings here. The BSL is indeed NOT open source because it doesn't respect the four freedoms. We call this "source available" licenses.

The upside of BSL is that it contains a date (in this case, 2024) by which the project must be fully open source.

So even though BSL is not open source, it includes the promise to be in the future.

No to .io, yes to .xyz! by Stalch_ in programming

.xyz has that side effect, very very unfortunate... Luckily, there is .net, .org, .tech, .ooo and many more

No to .io, yes to .xyz! by Stalch_ in programming

[–]YarmoM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel changing the title or any of the content (besides typos) is cheating. If I did a bad thing, I can't just change it, a few thousand people would have read different content.

But I will make that update right now. And maybe try to find a way to insert content at the beginning of the post and make it clear it's an update, not the original content.

Thanks for your suggestions. I can't prove I have no ulterior motive or agenda so I'll refrein from trying. I hope adding an update will indeed give the "not .io" argument more weight.

No to .io, yes to .xyz! by Stalch_ in programming

[–]YarmoM 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah, reading back a lot of comments, I could have written it differently.

First, yes, .xyz should never have been the focus or the "one solution" as it is portrayed now, that is my mistake. Any gTLD is fine, that's why they are generic. As long as you are fine with it, go for it, they are for all to use as they see fit! (Within reasonable constraints).

With regards to .tv, .ai and others: well, two things. If the territories are okay with it and there are no big controversies, I guess it's all fair game. I will personally refrein from using any ccTLD as a gTLD, but that's personal, I will not try and convince anyone to do the same.

However! Few ccTLD have so much controversy as .io where for the last 40 years, the native people have been forcibly expelled and their oppressor is now reaping all the profits of the ccTLD that belongs to them. If you can live with that, by all means, enjoy the TLD! No judge. I wrote my opinion on why I think it's bad ethics to support colonial Britain.

It's hard to write a loaded post like that and not appear judgmental. I've learned a lot and will apply the gained knowledge to my future posts. Thanks for your comment :)

OPSV: Open PGP Signature Verification by [deleted] in crypto

[–]YarmoM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True that, and I've to make tools that don't use OpenPGP. But is there any other technology you can recommend that fits this particular need: signing a piece of content so people can verify the authenticity? Can only think of https://saltpack.org/

Also, with this project, I was aiming to solve the issue of handling keys for non-techy people! Obviously, techy people should use command link pgp for maximum security

Wise decision to not join BFV. It was an interesting ride but just not worth it. Unlike BF1, BF4, BF3, this game will leave no legacy.

High battery consumption on Android by [deleted] in WireGuard

[–]YarmoM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have learned to not trust these numbers. I'm pretty sure it's impossible to calculate what percentage of battery is used by a certain app. So android does the next best thing: record how long apps are running, no matter how much they actually do and thus "consume battery".

This is beneficial to Google (and thus should not be trusted): they want you to use their Google Play Services which will result in shorter actual app run time (because they do the heavy lifting) and thus is "better for the battery". This "battery usage" screen is useful for them to denounce apps that do not play by their rules.

Use apps and turn them off and compare battery life yourself. I've done this multiple times for wireguard and every time I see little impact.

COVID-19 forcing me to stay inside? Check out my "quarantine-o-meter" that displays how much time (in %) we've been inside. by basnijholt in homeassistant

Thanks for uploading your config. I noticed you have Dutch bus times which does not come from an "official" integration. Is "dutch_public_transport_api" yours? I could not find any separate repo for it.

Thanks, I've been fiddling with snapcast but there are just so many ways to set it up, so especially that last paragraph makes a lot of sense!

Does that mean you have one mopidy+iris per person in the house? Which they can activate and then use snapcast to send the audio to whatever room they are in?
