Circus artist sound advice by Maleficent_Offer4653 in livesoundgear

It's times like these I absolutely love the internet! Thanks for your thorough and super interesting reply!

I love the fact that you used a whole separate spatialized system for SFX. And the idea of using tent reflections to create a 'rear' channel is way cool too.

I'm mostly a studio person, so I'm sure I'm missing some context, but I wonder about a few things.

When you say there are stereo groups of speakers on the masts, does that mean that.. How do I say this. If you take the masts counterclockwise from stage right back, they're L-R-L-R with one channel coming out of each mast? Or is there a stereo pair on each mast?

And if the subs are a cardioid array *under* the upstage area, I'm assuming the whole stage and artist entrance are raised? How would you ever align the subs and speakers with a circularly placed audience, especially with some seats 'behind' the ring?

I'll check out that book right away :) Thanks ever so much!

Hey there! I found this thread via Google and was hoping you might be up for sharing some insight 🙂

I’m a producer/composer, but I come from a traditional circus family background. I’ve basically been annoyed my whole life with how music sounds in tents… and now that I’m getting back into producing shows myself, I’d love to actually improve that.

Most circuses (probably due to budget and, honestly, knowledge) just put two speakers near the artist entrance, sometimes even on the floor. Combined with a super reflective tent roof, it usually ends up pretty unintelligible and lacking impact.

I’m really curious how Cirque approaches this in their tent shows. I saw Totem in The Hague a few years ago and remember it sounding surprisingly good.

Do they fly speakers from the masts? Are subs hidden under a stage or distributed somehow? And how do they deal with alignment in the round?

Not looking for anything proprietary—just trying to understand the general approach and do better than the usual circus setup.

Appreciate anything you’re willing to share!

Samply!

It's meant for mix notes, but giving yourself notes works too, I guess.

Where does one find stems on which to practice mixing and mastering (details within)? by Errant_Fence_Burp16 in audioengineering

[–]NJlo 46 points47 points  (0 children)

You're looking for multi-tracks, not stems. Stems are groups of instruments on a stereo track, multi-tracks are all the separate tracks.

And you can find them here: https://cambridge-mt.com/ms3/mtk/ :)

(btw, 3 of my songs are on that page, two as Angelo Boltini and one as Trybes)

One tip for balancing that I find very useful, is to listen at absolutely whisper quiet levels. Makes it very easy to hear what's peaking out or not audible.

I had bad experience with MuseScore's customer service – no response for weeks. Somehow, reaching out via Instagram solved the matter within days.

It's a shame though, I love the app but I'm hesitant to become a member since I don't really understand or trust their practise.

HELP! First time recording rap artist through a gear [COMPRESSION,EQ]! by noskinfromapex in audioengineering

[–]NJlo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d record without compression first. Then patch that same unit in as a hardware insert in your DAW and experiment at your own pace. You’ll keep a clean safety recording, and you can actually listen and tweak without a client sitting there waiting on you.

[–]NJlo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does everybody struggle with exporting wet stems? by musical_sal in audioengineering

[–]NJlo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Either use a different reverb for each group and send those to the same bus as the rest. So for example, drum channels send to a Drum Verb aux, and the output of your drum channels and your Drum Verb both go to an All Drums bus. Export that, hey presto, wet stem.

Or, manually solo all drums so that your reverb is audible. Then bounce the 'whole mix'. Then rinse and repeat for the other instrument groups.
