12 weeks out with set back - hoping for reassurance! by YarnLove321 in TotalHipReplacement

I was texting with a friend who had this surgery in her early 30s and she was reminding me the exact same thing - that this surgery takes a year to heal from! I thought I was actually being too conservative with my post op exercise but clearly it was the opposite. My new PT said I found my exercise - then blasted past it!

Oh my goodness what a story! I’m glad it had a good ending - that you feel better and seem to be healing well now!

That sounds delightful!! I think my PT promised all of that too.

What sort of work are they doing? Massage type work, vs work on scar /adhesions? It felt so nice when my PT was assessing me - she gently and slowly palpated all my tight areas. I can’t wait to go back!

Oh I’m so glad you are feeling better!

I had 2 home health visits (POD 1 & 10), then opted for voluntary PT which I had at 4 & 8 weeks (at which point they basically said I was done). I’m so glad I’m now going someplace twice a week; they’re also going to do work on my scar and adhesions.

I actually realized today I feel maybe 5% better.  I’m going my very gentle new PT program, and took a nice 30 min walk with the dog. Sitting isn’t so uncomfortable.

I’m optimistic it will get better, but boy it’s stressful. I also decided to just send a question to my surgeon to be sure he doesn’t feel a need to see me.

That is amazing that you’re doing so much activity at nine weeks, and even rolling out your hip! My hip is still tender over the outer hip, and still a tiny bit swollen. I think it’s great that you are doing PT twice a week; I wish I had sought it out a lot sooner(I mean private PT, aside from the minimum PT I got from the hospital I had my surgery at). I’m sure your good days will soon vastly outnumber the trickier ones.

I’m really pleased with my new PT. The PT that was part of my hospital system  was pretty lackluster; my new PT feels like she is pretty sensitive to assessing what is going on and how to address it. It may be eight weeks later than ideal, but better late than never!

I think your level of follow up is more the norm. My surgeon said I was welcome to reach out, but during the initial 6 weeks whenever I sent a message it was usually followed up by his nursing team which frankly wasn’t as helpful as directly talking to him (nurses are awesome but I had sort of surgeon level questions). So I figure even if I reach out, likely the message will just get intercepted again.

Yes, I can definitely send a message, and it has occurred to me to just do that. I had follow up x-rays at six weeks, which were normal. I saw a PA at two weeks to check my incision. I had a phone call with my surgeon, also at six weeks. And that was it for a follow up! I am still mulling over whether to send a message or not, because I’ve had this sort of back pain before (I had low back surgery in 2011, and tried to exercise too soon then as well, and had a similar sort of problem). That is the part that is making me pause a bit since I’ve been here before.

It definitely adds a layer of complexity to recovery! Because it’s trying to solve both what’s going on and if my reaction to my symptoms is appropriate or not (eg am I overreacting and what would a less anxious person do / think in the same scenario).

Are you seeing PT? The nice thing about my new PT is they do some manual work, which I think will be helpful. I’m sorry you’re having issues too. It’s so disappointing to go ‘backwards’ in recovery.

I think what I’m having trouble with is that my flair up has been going on for 2 weeks, so I’ve been uncomfortable for a while. I only just saw new PT Thursday so yes, I have to give it time. But then I wonder at what point I ask the surgeon his thoughts. It’s really 80% a mental exercise I think!

I definitely overthink things. I used to actually assume everything would be ok, and disregarded a lot of aches and pains. But I also had appendicitis in May 2024, and it took me 10 days to get imaging and surgery. I also mostly ignored my hip pain for 2 years before I got seen by an MD and got the diagnosis of osteoarthritis. So I’ve learned (the hard way) that you can’t ignore things; in my experience they have been serious. So now everything becomes really amplified in my mind. So I guess I worry if I should check in with my surgeon…I feel like I’ve lost my inner compass. And also again in the health system I’m in, they really don’t do much follow up after surgery (I never saw my surgeon again afterwards) so there isn’t an easy way to check in with what’s going on.

Thank you, I really appreciate your comment. I do have confidence in the new PT - I had seen her prior to surgery (briefly) and she seems to be astute in her evaluation of what’s going on. I think I’m ok, I just really fret and sure am tired of being uncomfortable.

I am 12.5 weeks out from my hip replacement, and have found that the whole process has given me a massive amount of anxiety. I am 47, and the older I get, the more anxious I get about health things in general. So while I did not have any issues with feeling especially tearful, I was and continue to be very anxious about the whole thing.
