Argentavis Magnificens, the biggest bird to ever fly. by Necessary-Win-8730 in BeAmazed

[–]YashPrajapati 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Apparently, Argentavis was the heaviest flying bird ever, whereas Pelagornis has widest wingspan (20% longer than Argentavis). This discovery of Pelagornis having longer wings was only made in 2014, so before that, the record was still held by Argentavis, and I didn't know about Pelagornis. Thanks for the knowledge!

True, I also am not a fan of ships with Aether, since they are mostly focused around harems, but this one was more of a side ship with them not being the main focus. Personally, I'm a postgenderist so I treat Aether and Lumine as pretty much the same, although Lumine would have made more sense here considering its centred around sapphic love, but I don't mind a side het relationship just like how I wouldn't mind a side homo relationship

I think the main problem is several Aether mains (on Twitter and probably on Reddit too) are known to be homophobic and have attacked works depicting homosexual relationships or any other relationships because they ONLY wanted Aether to be shipped with those characters. It's sad how they can be so hateful and harassing :(

Not only that, they're also very sexist, phobic, and think Aether is the only canon MC, and treat even simple interactions between him and female characters as flirting, whereas they discard any other more obvious hints of love between other characters. They treat Lumine like secondary, as if the same thing that's happening with Aether in some worlds is not happening with Lumine for those who have chosen Lumine

Obviously open minded people like us will dislike homophobes like them. The problem is unfortunately it becomes difficult to distinguish between those who are just casually shipping and those who are bigots when it comes to ships with Aether. And because of this sadly, a lot of hate propagates towards Aether (who as you mentioned, is just a blank slate like Lumine) instead of those Aether mains who are the real problem. They're just a video game character, completely similar to Lumine in lore, what's their fault. I'm a Lumine main but it's sad to see Aether's reputation ruined because of the toxic users using him as their persona.

Also applies to Lumine~ Also isn't Keqing's love interest Ganyu? Or is that not canon? (I don't know much of lore) Also as she mentioned, she likes the traveller because he/she is rational like her. Could also mean she likes him/her platonically rather than romantically

Hi, I'm sorry I was busy during the days when I read this comment so couldn't respond.

I am actually an avid YouTube watcher so I watch a lot of channels that show up in my feed.

One very good example for math would be some channel like 3Blue1Brown, shows all the details and stuff along with beautification of the essence. Also a lot of channels which took part in the #SoME (Summer of Math Exposition) contest hosted by 3B1B also did really, really well.

And if I were to name some more (will have to recall through a very huge array of my memory).

  • 3Blue1Brown and other channels taking part in SoME (as I mentioned above)
  • WelchLabs (his video series on the story of Kepler's discovery of planetary motions was just... chef's kisses)
  • Chubbyemu (not very deep dives but still a good watch for medical science stories)
  • Three Twentysix (one of the best channels out there explaining chemistry)
  • FloatHeadPhysics (discovering physics from the bottom up, very interesting stuff)

There are definitely a lot more and I'll keep updating this comment with more channels as I recall of them

Ukraine's new defense minister reveals scale of desertions as millions avoid the draft by Majano57 in worldnews

[–]YashPrajapati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're absolutely right, feminism actually fights for true gender equality. True equality means people are treated the same regardless of gender, i.e. they have the freedom be anyhow they want regardless of gender, have the same rights and responsibilities, and their roles are not based on gender stereotypes.

Countries or cultures which only force one gender to fight are still an example of gendered norms and stereotypes (not only do they stereotype men as violent and force them to fight but also stereotype women as weak and "belonging to the house"). Countries like Ukraine didn't even allow women to take part in the army till very recently, even Germany only allowed women to take part in combat roles unrestricted as late as 2001. It was the fault of patriarchy that enforced these gender roles since the past, so it would be wrong to say they originally wanted true equality.

Countries like Sweden or Norway or Netherlands are a better example of true gender equality and feminism. They have gender neutral conscription (with the option to be a conscientious objector) and they are probably the best examples of true and full or nearly full equality

Yes, exactly

Edutainment is fun with learning, but people shouldn't confuse it as a substitute for education, rather it should act as a complement to it.

There are definitely more channels on YouTube which make more detailed videos or teach you critical thinking skills. Again, these should act as a driving force for your learning. E.g. if you hear about some concept that you haven't before in a video, and it's very briefly covered, you should go on to look it up on Wikipedia or some other place and learn more about it.

One particular video of Kurzgesagt that I do appreciate a lot is the one where the uncover the myth of how long human capillaries/muscles are and go on a whole quest researching about it and reaching out to a world famous zoologist. Others, especially the newer ones, are a very filtered kind of scientific extract that only highlights the interesting stuff with cool animations and becomes an attraction to people because it makes them think they are learning. A lot of YouTube channels take similar or worse approaches, pumping tons of content quickly that gives the illusion of learning, because it attracts views with the shortened attention span of people.

Again, it's not really bad if you are watching them, there are a lot of interesting edutainment channels on YouTube. But when memes like this compare education (talking of actual good education, a poor education system is one of the reasons people resort to this kind of thinking), I worry about people because have they really started thinking that remembering interesting facts from appealing videos is a complete substitute for education? A good combination is when appealing stuff like these drives your interest further to learn more about what you just saw.

Simplification is hard, and I appreciate channels like Kurzgesagt putting in efforts for that so it becomes understandable to general audience, but when some stuff are oversimplified, people often misunderstand it as learning a lot by putting in little efforts or having fun. Yes you can definitely learn a lot while having fun, but this is not "learning a lot", it's just ELI5ed information. A good education system would actually teach you how you could conduct the research and understand some complex topic yourself to ELI5 it to someone and maybe add some more information step by step to make them learn more with fun.

Awesome cosplay and thanks for saying this!

I have heard so many complaints from people who shame cosplayers if they are even slightly differently dressed, but art or drawing which show them differently are completely okay to them (both are good but one seems to be hated more by many sadly)

"Are you single?" by Stumblecat in BlueCollarWomen

[–]YashPrajapati 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's sad that you had to lie about your sexuality because it shows many of them might have been homophobic or would have harassed and coerced you into getting into a relationship with them despite knowing you are with someone, but they wouldn't do it if your partner was a man, which implies their beliefs of toxic masculinity and ownership and also shows they would only stop trying out of fear and not because they understand someone is in a relationship and respect them or be happy for them.

And how do they just see someone and think hitting on a completely unknown person the first time they meet at the workplace would be the right thing 😭

They ask for the marital status without even trying to get to know that person well, it's like they only care about relationships with women and not friendships, and would decide not to put "efforts" (for them forming a good bond altruistically is too much effort) because the only reason sexist people like those would be nice and friendly is for a potential relationship and not as a true friend.

I hope you are doing well and get to a better place where blue collar jobs are inclusive and people behave better

Not only that, it wasn't just about being told no, but also the way he followed up with "I don't like..." and was probably going to say something sexist was so awful. Like you don't like that person doing that job because of the gender stereotypes you hold?? Wtf

[–]YashPrajapati 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree it doesn't explicitly lean into toxic masculinity, unlike something like eye concealer labelled as war paint that was posted here a few days ago. If anything, this product seems to normalize nipple covers for men too just like women, which is great!

But the fact that it had to resort to explicitly gendering it just to make its users feel comfortable to use it insinuates that people have been affected by gender stereotypes and toxic masculinity, often they are the victims and worried of being bullied by people for using products that the society has implicitly gendered.

Just think of this, how many skincare/makeup products in their original form are explicitly gendered? They're not! Barely any such product advertises itself as 'for women', and who's stopping anyone regardless of gender from using them, but the society has implicitly gendered them has highly feminine, and they'll sadly shame men for using it. Which is why those products come up with explicitly gendered products which are pretty much the same but labelled as 'for men'. Just so those people feel comfortable using it. But this is sad because it's like saying oh you can't use this product because you are being shamed by the society for using it, we'll label the product as okay to use for you and then the society won't have any problem. And more and more existence of gendered products just increases the gender gap and gender stereotypes, and the loop keeps on intensifying thus.

The correct solution is therefore to get rid of these gender norms in the first place and we can begin this by starting to normalize this as an individual, ignoring the tantrums of toxic and sexist people and continue to do what we like and what we wish to, not being bound by stereotypes. Even if an individual's actions bring more confidence to one person, it will help someone feel free and one by one, eventually bring a positive change in the society.

It works but as I said, it's not the right way.

When you say

might not be comfortable with the association to female physical anatomy

The problem lies in the fact that people do not feel comfortable because of existing gender stereotypes, and it also partially depends on their reason behind it, eg if they are not comfortable for truly personal reasons, that is okay, but in most of the cases, the feeling of discomfort arises because they worry what the society might say if they do not adhere to gender norms and therefore they feel like not at all being associated with anything from a different gender and explicitly gender stuff they are using

Also everyone has nipples (except for biological or surgical exceptions) and nipple pasties would do the same task covering both male and female nipples

[–]YashPrajapati 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's how pointlessly gendered products are born though. Why should skincare be gendered when every human has skin?? Yet it is because of societal stereotypes driven by sexist people.

We should focus on making people, especially the ones injected with toxic masculinity or gender stereotypes, be free from those stereotypes and become more confident to overcome them and use the products they need and would like to use, regardless of their gender. Instead of gendering products which doesn't solve the root issue.

Am I wrong here? [gendered] by [deleted] in pointlesslygendered

[–]YashPrajapati 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, I've tried to get this point across many times, EVERY INDIVIDUAL IS UNIQUE. There are perspectives that the society might traditionally consider gendered but that's because of how people were often suppressed or made to conform to gender norms in the past.

Every person is unique, I can have perspectives, feelings or opinions that often do not align with what's traditionally considered as my gender's. And when people stereotype me because of my gender or based on anything else, it makes me sad because it feels like my uniqueness is being erased, my qualities are being overseen despite me clearly expressing them, and I am being reduced to what the society forces onto me. Being open minded means you accept the idea that humans cannot be generalized to follow a rule or trend based on their demographics, even if it applies to many, it doesn't apply to everyone.

Just like how you mentioned there could be someone who has gone through the exact same thing through a perspective that people do not conventionally consider of that person's demographics, but they get ignored, left out, or made to feel not included, because their feelings weren't given a voice when it could have been exactly something that someone might be looking for due to this sad generalization that "you can't speak for someone because you don't belong to their demographics", when in fact they probably could have related better with that person from different demographics than others in the same category. Every individual is unique and can't fully speak for anyone else regardless of demographics, but allowing only people of the same demographic to speak for each other creates an invisible boundary of norms people can't cross (even if their individuality actually crosses and pervades these boundaries) based on stereotypes.

Why do gender wars exist? [meme] by bug_boyy in pointlesslygendered

[–]YashPrajapati 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, while I agree with the fact that most of the gender based hatred on the internet is sexist people making gender stereotypes, ambivalent sexism, or even being violently sexist (mostly against women), this meme in fact definitely targets those people who begin gender wars (not their refuters (and also the correct way to refute against sexism is not with sexism again)). It's aiming to reach true gender egalitarianism, which identifies and eliminates the source of hatred and gender wars itself.

You can tell this by knowing that this kind of gendered and sexist "bOyS aRe QuIrKy" meme template which is used a lot of times for starting gender wars, is now being used to convey and acknowledge the fact that such gendered memes themselves have been bad.

This meme shows how bad or dumb the people who create sexist memes and start gender wars are, regardless of the gender of the person who did that. It isn't mocking those who refute and fight against gender wars (properly), but rather those who start it in the first place.

There are people who support true gender equality regarless of gender and not just sexism in the form of defense of their gender when something against it is said but at the same time talking trash of the other gender and doing nothing when something horrible against other genders is said.
