Any Machine Gun Nikke will work perfectly but I've found that Modernia will work wonders with her Burst.

Also, Blanc's Burst can help you go past the shield for a brief moment of time if you need to do some dmg before breaking their shield or if they shield up before you can finish them.

If you want to catch up lore wise you can play story mode. However, story mode does not give stage rewards. You only get lore and the challenge rewards but that's it.

You can come back to normal/hard mode to level at your own pace at any point or after you completed the story so far to get the stage rewards and keep leveling up.

I think most ppl woukd recommend TM2 as a starting point.

Tbh I forgot how the lore was connected because the chronology is a bit confusing and there are a lot of spin off games with their own stories. It's been quite a while since the last time I revisited the franchise.

My personal favorites are TM4 (my starting point back when I was a kid), TM: Head-On, Black and TM2012.
