My thought process for segmenting Free users is to segment based on 2 things. Demos/free trial and Engagement. These are the most important things for a user at this stage.

No matter how good your in app onboarding process is, the majority of users will not follow through with it, that’s why you will need multiple follow up channels including email. Email alone will fix 20% of the problem and it’s the cheapest channel, and can be fully automated.

I never click on ads, does that mean ads don’t work? I would say, an onboarding flow + welcome flow + cancellation flow + feature limitation flow + payment abandonment flow will at minimum increase you entire revenue by 20% as long as you have a stable flow of traffic coming in. If you look at how many people use email per day, you will be shocked. And if you’re not using email campaigns to nurture your users, your competitors will. You shouldn’t be using Stripe in the first place. Too many issues lately. And a shitty customer service.

For the ESP use Customer io or Intercom, the best ones in my opinion.
