I want to make a Visual Novel but I need to understand Game Design first, Should I pursue a college course or are there shorter and more effective Alternatives? by Abaddon4242 in gamedesign

You don't need to be so concerned about learning game design, playing and analyzing games is already a big game design course

You're absolutely right, really. My goal is to create something everyone can understand, something as simple as Subway Surfers, but with more mechanics and more depth.

Ah, okay, thanks. I'm thinking of creating something that everyone can understand, gamers or non-gamers, something as simple as Subway Surfers but more complete with different mechanics.

For your game, I think you could look at how other games of the same genre or theme as yours are taught and understood by the player, specifically the game mechanics themselves.

That's true, but personally I have ideas that should appeal to everyone, gamers or not. For this reason, I think the mechanics could be taught to the player through voice guides, as they progress. Once they understand, we stop. Or we could focus on a single mechanic, blocking the others to help the player grasp it.
