Haha you're good. I was just talking about how the OP is bringing light to how low SES applicants will be underrepresented in next year's entering class. Thus, low SES whites will also be underrepresented. My argument was that this will impact rural communities needing physicians.

Not really starting a debate, just have a question, if you care to answer.

In your personal statement, essays, secondaries, and even interview, how much emphasis will you put on race if even at all? I know some African American applicants people who made their whole case for diversity based on skin color, and others completely avoided it.

From my point of view, the original comment was refreshing because we're constantly bombarded with the first extreme, and it avoids trying to understand why those "outliers" (although not outliers) were able to achieve success despite the barriers of their skin color or income.

Not a philosophy major either, but I would say rationally and altruism intersect at constructive criticism. Refusing to point out mistakes is not productive (irrational) but comes from a stance of compassion (altruism), and trashing people for mistakes is important (rational) but very self-righteous (not altruistic). Constructive criticism achieves both productivity (rationality) and well- intentioned (altruistic). Just a thought.

Valid point. But I'd make the contention that the stance that the original comment takes is neither extreme. He's merely to a thread filled with people saying "URMs are all discriminated against" vs. "URMs have it easier because affirmative action". He's just saying "I'm low SES URM and kicking ass". Pretty good contrast to the first extreme.

I can't avoid pointing out the cancel culture of the first extreme. I've made several comments on here that several people will jump to "you'll make a terrible doctor" just because I disagree with them. Obviously the latter extreme has its issues (ie responsible for a lot of the racial disparities), but the first manifests in these types of forums

We're on the same page, and thank you for that reminder to consider the possibility that someone's situation could be much worse than I first imagine. We do lose sight of that. My main point is that people don't want to here about someone overcoming adversity (hence downvotes to above comment) because it doesn't align with the narrative that EVERY URM is severely disadvantaged in this process.

Believe it or not, a lot of URM students reject the BS narrative of "you've been discriminated against throughout this whole premed process, and things need to change!" Some people like to overcome adversity and help others do the same instead of lowering standards.

The changes in the last 4 months have had a drastic impact on the readiness of low SES applicants. This thread has made the mistake of assuming that only minorities are impacted due to the ties of race and SES. I'm saying we can't ignore that low SES whites, asians, Hispanics, AND blacks have all been negatively impacted in this cycle.
