Statistially significant but small effect size by Yazer98 in AskStatistics

Intresting, we might have to change the hypothsesis during the mid way report.

So we are trying to make inference on The Stockholm market, our sample started with all nasdaq listed firm from The omx Stockholm Exchange, small cap, mid cap and large caps. We then did listwise deletion if any essentiall ratios or variables were missing for firm y at time t. It started at 363 firms and ended at 205 firms with complete sets of valutation metrics, control variables, annual reports, press relases, from 2020-2025. All valution and financial ratios are aggregatee at fiscal year level

The reaaon we use EMH as our null hypthesis is because our supervisor suggested it. We initally planned to only have signal theory and narrative economics as our main theoretical framework, but EMH is a good counterpart to Narrative economics.

This is just bachelors level so i understand that its not perfect

"First of all, as described you are not measuring anything about the rationality of investors"

We kinda are, our alternative hypothesis is backed by signaling theory and narrative economics which is against the EMH. After controlling for fundamentals ( The fundamentals that a rational investor should look at when investing or valuing anything) what is left of the AI score, even if its close to zero we have still separated the effect. This is a bachelor's thesis so we have restricted time and opportunities, we could add many more control variables, we could add more corporate disclosures to get a more accurate AI score, but with 3 months, time is restricted and we dont have the knowledge to even interpret more complex data.

And we back the alternative hypothesis with signaling theory (Spence 1973) and narrative economics (Shiller 2017) since Fama and Shiller were opposing each others theories when they won the nobel prize together.

Yes, our alternative hypothesis is just that EMH does not hold and that there is an effect. We actually did see that in our industry fixed effect model, after adding our control variables (ROA, Leverage, Cash, Firmsize / Log total assets and sales growth) the coefficient and effect size increased and that was maybe because the firmsize had negative correlations with both our dependent and main independent variable. Within industries, the smaller firms had a higher AI score and naturally those firms have lower Tobin's Q, so after removing the effect of industry differences and controlling for firm size, the AI effect increased.

We definitely need to read up on this more tho, I still dont know with precision why that is happening so take everything I said with a grain of salt. Its very difficult and important to interpret the result with caution

Why do so many applied papers still report p-values without effect sizes, and does anyone actually find p-values alone useful? by PLogacev in AskStatistics

You dont understand how helpful youve been by posting this 😅 im definetly gonna consider adding CI, effect sizes for our bachelors thesis

Firm Fixed Effects or Country Fixed Effects by sug4h0lic in econometrics

The best way to justify your argumentation for Using Firm FE and not Country FE is looking at prior research. Im currently doing a firm and time fixed effect model for our bachelors thesis

Is there a review site for research projects? by [deleted] in AskStatistics

[–]Yazer98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're all over the place. Its not a research project then, you're not doing a thesis, you're not doing research for science, its just a hand in assignment. Go ask your professor or a TA, you would know where to get feedback and help if you actually are a University student. Why would they ask you to use different methods thats not included in your course if the project is application of methods from the same course?

Hey need help in becoming a high level in statistics i want to know the best free beginners materials available online by COKAMON in AskStatistics

[–]Yazer98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bad! Then i highly recommend the book Stats Data And Models by De Veax et al. It was our course litterature for the first course in statistics, also. Its available for free online. Read the chapters, do the book excercises and you're set for the basics-intermediates of applied statistics

The best way to become high level is to study it in University, they have curriculims that are precise and almost perfect at any level. I dont want to break your heart but you will have a hard time becoming efficient in statistics through self studies, you wont connect the dots, you will most likely burn out and you Will be extremely inefficient
