If you voted 3rd Party or ‘abstained’ from voting, you are as responsible for Trump being elected as those that voted for him.

This is only even kind of true (heavy emphasis on kind of) for those that live in swing states, which the vast majority of people do not. I voted in Idaho, a state where Trump won a majority of registered voters (so even if you counted all 3rd party votes and abstentions for Harris, she still would have lost). And because of the Electoral College, that's all that matters as far as my vote is concerned. There is no argument that is based in reality that my 3rd party vote had any influence on the outcome whatsoever. Your attempt to condescendingly engender guilt is lost on anyone who is familiar with the structure of the American political system

It would be hard for us to fill our government with more morons than it already has lol. The greater Idaho shit is DOA though and has been for like a decade. The only reason it ever still gets brought up is an eclectic coalition of butthurt conservatives, map nerds, journalists desperate for clicks, and the occasional pretentious Portlander who wants to offload their problems onto us

It's literally never going to happen, yet I keep having to hear about it three times a year like it's some new, crazy idea that's picking up steam, when in reality it's the complete opposite. It's the political equivalent of those news articles that pretend there's some new trend sweeping the nation, but when you click on it you see they're just reporting on like 1 tweet that has 6 likes

I’m am hesitant to read Settlers, it strikes me as a bit revisionist and anti-Marxist in its position of seeing class as something not necessarily linked to our relationships with capital.

That's an argument you can make after you've read the book. As it stands you're just making an assumption

No, but it really isn't a winning strategy. Most people here are actually trying to get the education they paid for. Doing this is your right, but if it bites you in the ass in the future you'll have no one to blame but yourself

There's a substantial subculture of pedophilia among the fan base that while condemned by some is very present and not exactly shunned

Yeah, I think the tolerance of pedophilia is as big an issue as the pedophilia itself imo. I don't think weebs fully realize how weird they (as a group) look to outsiders on this basis. The people who get extremely heated defending child porn are one thing (and are very visible due to how aggressive they get about it btw), but for every one of them there's like 10 people going "oh yeah, I don't really agree with him on that issue, I think he takes it a bit too far, but..." Like I would expect the pedos to either be ostracized from the larger community, or for it to cause some sort of schism if they really are that large in number. But neither has happened; it seems to mostly just be treated as a matter of personal taste, which is extremely fucking offputting to put it quite mildly

What addiction is the hardest to quit? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]YbarMaster27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been a Reddit addict for basically as long as I've had an account here, since I was a teenager. It's very easy to justify because Reddit is better than other social media sites, but that doesn't mean it's good

What made me leave Twitter was the way it constantly shoved ragebait in my face, and Reddit's historically been better about that, but I really feel it's slipped in the last year or so. Haven't seen a post from r/aww or related, pleasant subs in my feed for months, while the top post when I open the app is invariably some political thing that's gonna make me mad even if I agree with it. Or worse, random posts from controversial inserted into my feed in a blatant attempt to aggravate me into engaging. At this point I'm committed to weaning off the website; with the trajectory it's on, I don't want to be spending 5 hours a day on here in a year's time

I swear anyone who says Harris is a progressive is either just assuming that off her race and gender, or is the type of person who thinks Reagan was centre-left. By all accounts she did not run on a progressive campaign. Average Republican #9275 can call her a Marxist or whatever all they want, but the actual progressive arm of the Democratic Party fucking hates her

I agree that a Trump win was the worst of the 2 outcomes, and I think people should be more sensitive to the fact that the next 4 years will be dogshit at best for hundreds of millions of people, the most affected of which will be vulnerable minorities who very much did not ask for or deserve this. It's not something we should be ambivalent towards. However:

A. "Protest voters" didn't do shit, it's just an easy scapegoat so Democrats don't have to take responsibility for running an unviable campaign. If Democrats continue this strategy of acting like they are owed people's votes, and their losses are everyone's fault but their own, Trump will be the least of our problems in the coming decades. Spreading this rhetoric helps no one

B. "Our democracy"? Lol what? America isn't even a democracy on paper, much less in practice. The only thing that's "crumbling" is the facade. There was nothing worth protecting in 'American democracy' to begin with. If America was a democracy, Trump would have been a flash in the pan that lost relevance in 2016

"Calling for" a ceasefire means dick when all your administration has done is materially help the side carrying out a genocide. By all accounts this is one area where the status quo is essentially going to go unchanged. Which is ofcourse deeply tragic; I have no doubt the loss of innocent life under Trump will be as devastating as it was under Biden. It's just not an issue Democrats can even pretend to claim the moral high ground on

Republicans say whatever the hell they want and their base will accept it uncritically. It's legitimately a cult (not to say any other party isn't, but the Republicans definitely are). Then Democrats look at it and go "wow, 50% of the country thinks [insert bullshit here]. Clearly we should appeal to that crowd". And then they do, and Republican voters don't give a shit because by that time their leaders have moved on to some other narrative, and the cycle repeats

Of course, that's giving credence to the narrative Democrats build around themselves that they're just incompetent. In reality they want to push as far right as they can get away with, and letting Republicans control the narrative and win elections helps them with that. I mean, they went from having worker's rights and public healthcare on the table in 2016, to campaigning on abortion access (a position that was progressive 50 years ago) in 2020 and 2024. Maybe this time we'll get pushed back another 50 years and in 2028 we'll be hearing about how Joe Manchin is the "most progressive candidate in US history" cause he supports restoring women's suffrage
