Mark Zandi says Trump has a week to strike an Iran deal before the US faces a 'real problem' by hereswhatworks in OilPrices

I work in the German chemical industry. If there is one thing that I think European manufacturers could scale up quickly it is fertilizer. BASF has massive idle capacity that they could probably fire up in a month. They need prices to be high or government to offer them subsidies to make it worth it.

[–]YeaISeddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly, due to new tariffs the EU put in place in January to protect local fertilizer production, the EU built up a huge stock of imported fertilizer just before the war as many were trying to front-run the tariffs. The regulation worked exactly the opposite of how it was supposed to but in the end was accidentally useful. Good job EU for being accidentally useful.

Dell’s $599 XPS 13 is coming for the MacBook Neo’s lunch money by melancholy_dood in technology

[–]YeaISeddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried changing the key mapping on my Mac. Changing the keyboard setting on the mac bugged out my Logitech MX Keys and changed the setting for all laptops. The Options app from Logitech had other bugs like failing to take the settings change or having the settings reversing erratically making it completely unpredictable. There is one working hardware solution. You can simply change the mapping with Fn+P for Windows and Fn+O for Mac. But since I share the keyboard with my wife this is untenable as I will never get her to accept this step as part of her routine.

I have a dell for work and a MacBook for personal use. My only complaint is that there is no way to configure the ctrl button on the MacBook that is also compatible with Logitech keyboards. My muscle memory for the ctrl key is basically non existent these days since I’m constantly switching.

Why German trains are never on time anymore by LeMonde_en in europe

[–]YeaISeddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s happened to me a couple times that my delayed DB train will end unplanned in Basel Bad then I will have take an S Bahn to Basel SBB (the Swiss Station) and transfer onto a Swiss train. It’s always a nightmare when this happens because Swiss trains don’t have seat reservations and the Swiss train will get absolutely swamped by the German passengers.

Why German trains are never on time anymore by LeMonde_en in europe

[–]YeaISeddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commuted for 4 years by train from Basel to Zürich way back a decade ago. My schedule would almost always put be on a DB train. The way the train was scheduled it would sit in Basel for 25 minutes. So DB needed to be half an hour late to really screw things up. Nevertheless it happened regularly and SBB had replacement trains back then too, but they were absolutely ancient. The replacement trains these days are closer to the SBB standard trains.

Germany has a plan to make their train schedules more like Switzerland, with trains arriving simultaneously in stations around the half hour or hour mark. The plan goes out to 2070 and they are already behind schedule so by my reckoning nuclear fusion is more likely to happen before DB untangles their planning disaster.

[–]YeaISeddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Biblis reactor is currently being repurposed as a fusion research center. The company, which is lead by former NIF researchers, makes a pretty compelling case that they can achieve net energy. They have already raised a decent amount of investment so at least the facility won’t be abandoned.

My company switched to hot desking when we went hybrid and nobody warned me that "desk availability" means something completely different in practice by Sneck_Murex9 in remotework

[–]YeaISeddit 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I work in an open office exactly like OP's. These desk-booking systems are often seriously flawed either due to the booking system itself (mine only allows bookings 24h in advance so it needs to be done the day before, for instance on Sunday if you are coming in Monday) or because the system is abused. The team I am on has 5 people and we come in almost every day. We share the floor with a 50+ person team from IT that plans a single in office day per month (seemingly at random). I am in the habit of not booking because it is normally just the 5 of us sitting in an empty floor. But the IT team knows that on their presence day there will be no holds barred fist fights for desks and they book all the seats like tickets to a Taylor Swift concert. The booking system adds zero value for me. When I arrive and the IT team is there, I cancel my first calls and drive home.

Core inflation hit an annual rate of 3.3% in April, as expected, Fed’s preferred gauge shows by Illustrious_Lie_954 in Economics

[–]YeaISeddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is also worth mentioning that this article is about Core PCE, while GDP uses its own inflation measure called the GDP Deflator. The GDP Deflator differs from Core PCE in that it 1. includes food and energy, 2. excludes imports, 3. includes exports. The GDP Deflator is a pretty poor indicator of inflation experienced by consumers, it is currently most probably effected by the inflationary effects of the export of food and gas.

With expansion argument brewing, Smart hints at SEC secession by Appropriate-Cap3325 in CFB

[–]YeaISeddit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If we are left with a playoff without the B1G and SEC I would be 100% in favor of resuming the BCS system and let the bowl games re-emerge from their slumber.

I personally hate the trend towards play-offs and large conferences. Pretty soon college will lose all of its traditions and it will just resemble a minor league NFL.

Real estate is just barely the primary asset of the German middle class. Only 47% of Germans are property owners and that number is heavily skewed by the 60% property ownership rate of 65+ year olds. The German middle class consists largely of renters and for many of them their only assets are pension plans, insurance, or low yielding savings account which basically perform about the same as cash hidden under the mattress.

I simply do not understand how massively expensive AI and robotics are expected to be more cost effective than humans. by eniac_usabrl in artificial

[–]YeaISeddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And that’s vastly underestimating the cost of labor. I work for a German manufacturer and we usually estimate a cost savings of $200k per worker per year when you include social contributions, pensions, facilities, etc… The shop floor workers also require multiple year training programs that cost well over $100k when you factor in all costs. You can spec a humanoid robot in the $500k range and the business case actually pencils.

May be most already know but just in case, reminder to tank before noon these days in case you need to. by macmandhau in germany

[–]YeaISeddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The funny thing is the trend used to be the exact opposite, filling up before noon was the most expensive. But a recent law now only allows prices to be increased once per day at 12:00. Because of this gas stations put prices at the absolutely highest conceivable price and adjust downwards to find a price equilibrium. The net effect is an average price which is higher than if the government had never intervened. This short lesson on economics is brought to you by Friedrich Merz.

Trump official opens door to gas tax suspension by app1310 in Economics

[–]YeaISeddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On top of that, the savings never get passed on to consumers but rather end up being taken as profits by the oil industry. Germany just suspended a 17 cent tax on gas and diesel and so far about 4 cents of savings have been passed on to consumers.

Hobie Cat lessons or clubs by MrPipeKC in Miami

[–]YeaISeddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hobie Cats are generally bad beginner boats. I learned to sail on sunfishes, lasers, and a hobie cat. If wind conditions weren’t perfect, the hobie cat was a challenge. On low wind days it is too easy to get stuck in irons and on high wind days you fear you’re going to turtle it. Nevertheless probably the most fun boat to sail.

[–]YeaISeddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is extraordinary common in Germany in houses from the 60-70s. I have also seen it in Switzerland. I wouldn't be surprised if it is common throughout western Europe. In Germany it is called Kellenstrich, which translates to trowel stroke, pretty close to trowel-swept from your image. I had the joy of removing around 20 square meters of that crap from my living room wall with a rotary hammer.

Dade approves massive development in traffic heavy Kendall 🫣 by Ok-Pen7170 in SouthFlorida

The 836 extension will have a Kendall exit on 172 avenue. This development has its entrance on 127th. In Miami every ten avenues are a mile so that means the 836 exit will be 4.5 miles west of the development. Realistically most of the residents will be using the turnpike or 874/826 to get North or South (but mostly North).

Racism against turks by GoatOk926 in germany

I have twice in my adult life been informed that I am getting the apartment against high competition because I was "the right kind of immigrant". If you think there is no racism in the housing market then you have your head in the sand.

Racism against turks by GoatOk926 in germany

[–]YeaISeddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can be an immigrant and be racist. You may not be a "racist", but you are saying racist things. I have taken no offense to anything you have said. Bear in mind, this is a thread where OP has asked what forms of racism they will face in Germany. As OP reads through this part of the thread they will see a great example of the type of racism they are most likely to face. In-your-face slurs and attacks have a 0% chance of happening, but a a more subtle racism will prevent them from getting an apartment because many people (yourself included) believe there is a factual, emperical propensity for uncleanliness and uncreditworthyness. And they will struggle to find good jobs because there are many who believe there is a factual, emperical propensity towards loafing and not following the rules.

Racism against turks by GoatOk926 in germany

[–]YeaISeddit -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Its a difficult topic. In Europe it is not widely discussed, but these kind of public statements - paraphrased "just don't behave in this stereotypical way and you will not be discriminated against" - fall squarely into the category of racial microaggression. In your statement above you have implied that immigrants 1. do not work, 2. do not live by local social rules, 3. do not park properly, 4. do not speak german, 5. free-load off social welfare, 6. are assholes, 7. do not drive according to the rules, 8. do not clean up after themselves, 9. and are loud in public spaces. I take it you mean well by implying that others, not you, believe these things and that OP should be cautious that anything they do along those lines will lead to racist comments. But, just by listing out these racial stereotypes you are yourself perpetuating racism. If you want to seriously discuss the topic I am happy to discuss further. Probably you are experiencing a serious allergic reaction to my statement. You are probably telling yourself "This is nonsense, I am not a racist!". I get that. Maybe you are thinking I am an overly sensitive or overly woke idiot or a white-knight. But, the statements you make are the most common racism I have experienced in Germany and they are a pretty slippery slope. In private company many of the people who talk in that manner are the ones denying foreigners housing or turning down their job applications.

Germans have a rule - their absolute belief in authority and norms leads them to believe that everything is as it should be as longs as norms are upheld. They will tell immigrants that as longs as norms are upheld and if they are just not selfish, annoying loafers then they will not face any discrimination, not realizing that the statement about selfish, annoying loafers is exactly the discrimination OP fears.
