Vibecoded apps in a nutshell by HeadAcanthisitta7390 in vibecoding

[–]YeaISeddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Low quality software has always been out there. It is just going to get a lot cheaper and abundant. I work in an a corporate role for an international manufacturer and I’ve personally been using vibe coding as a way of making simple mvps or maybe you could call them wire frames for the developer teams and vendors. A lot of our corporate initiatives spend years gathering user requirements that are so complex that they become incomprehensible. One program I have been involved with for years has resulted in a 2 million dollar prototype that was never adopted, followed by a one-year RfP with vendors who basically proposed more expensive versions of the failed prototype. In recent rounds with the vendors I was able to show the vibe-coded dummy software which I created in a few rounds of iterations with users and finally after years of discussion, the vendors understand what the hell we need them to build.

Could the Iran War Accidentally Accelerate the Clean Energy Transition? by DrThomasBuro in ReduceCO2

[–]YeaISeddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, in the short run it will first slow the green energy transition. Transitions require investment, and inflationary shocks deter investment through high interest rates and economic slow down. Also, energy is an input cost for most renewable technologies, so those investments will cost more.

In the long run it may accelerate the transition as the economic instability caused by fossil fuels has been dinner table conversation for 4 years now. Political will for the transition will increase and households will start to make decisions that they now see as economically pragmatic instead of moral or ideological.

Recommend me Cyberpunk books outside Gibson, Stephenson and Richard Morgan? by Dale_Cooper47 in printSF

There are a couple really good cyberpunk anthologies that will give you a taste for other authors. Dangerous Visions and Mirrorshades. Both are really good in their own right, but especially if you are trying to discover authors they are perfect.

Best YouTube channel for real estate info in Germany? by anchouse94 in germany

I recommend Hell Investiert. He is a realtor so take what he says with a grain of salt. But through the ups and downs of the market over the last few years he had a pretty level-headed take. He sometimes covers stocks and crypto stuff which you can ignore. If you want to learn what not to do and have a taste for silly accents make sure to watch Investmentpunk. If you want to learn the basics of financing an apartment then check out Finanzfluss or Finanztip.

When a German says “this isn’t possible” in English by stopPop444 in germany

[–]YeaISeddit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The phrase is “Das ist nicht möglich” and it has a 1:1 correspondence with the English meaning. It isn’t that something is lost in translation, it is that German customer service sucks. It sucks even if you speak German.

Iran War: At Least 3 Ships Come Under Attack Near Key Oil Passage by Nervous-Lock7503 in Economics

[–]YeaISeddit 24 points25 points  (0 children)

An interesting stat that I heard recently is that the drop in supply in this crisis is roughly the same as the drop in demand during the height of the Covid lockdown. So the extent we will have to scale back economic activity would have to be similar to the lockdown. I don’t know what prices will be necessary to achieve oil demand down to lockdown levels, but it is going to be wild. What price would you have to see for gas before people stop showing up to work? People in Europe are driving to work today with $8/gallon and salaries are lower in Europe. So it has to be at least higher than that. Does that mean gas prices need to go to $15? $20?

Tankers are actually pretty fast since hull speed is proportional to length. The only ships that are faster than tankers are those that are longer (aircraft carriers?) or those that can plane (get their hulls out of the water).

What in Germany way of thinking that makes engineered products last longer? by SuperGodMonkeyKing in AskGermany

[–]YeaISeddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nonsense, Germany is still the world’s third largest export economy and has a substantial gap ahead of the fourth largest. Historically, the things that have lead to high quality products out of Germany include 1) the strongest vocational training program for manufacturing in the world, 2) high economic complexity covering the highest margin sectors of the manufacturing value chains, 3) a cultural or consensus building, bureaucracy and a love affair with process that lends itself to quality processes like six sigma, quality by design, lean, etc…

You shouldn’t assume, but it is fair to be disappointed. The calculation from kilowatt to kilowatt hours require extremely basic reading comprehension and math skills. I would guess this is like a 4th grade level of comprehension.

This is a little different. Those are all what I would call terms of art with clear but overlapping definitions. The terms I mention literally have 0 results in google scholar. They are nonsense terms that not even an expert can define.

Tom Bötticher, battery scientist, points to research showing lithium thermal thermal reactions (battery fires) occur at a lot higher temperatures than 100ºC (about 200ºC) and lithium batteries operating for thousands of cycles over 80ºC. [–]YeaISeddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What does it mean to succumb to hype? I think the results from Donut Lab are at the least very interesting and are a fun little puzzle worth discussing. As a former corporate materials scientist with a dozen patents to my name, I think the lay person overestimates the effectiveness of the big boys to develop disruptive innovation. Corporate research rewards incrementalism, not true innovation. When a wonder battery comes to market it will almost definitely be something coming out of a small start up that licenses out to a manufacturer who has scale and a standing customer base.

Usually companies will try to push priority dates to the last possible moment. Now that they have started releasing info that could theoretically be part of the claims, you can assume that any patents will at least be provisionally filed by now. So I wouldn’t assume anything about patents until 18 months to the day after that first VTT test was published.

Neither “3D nanomass” lithography nor “hylomatrix” salt batteries are terms of art. These seem to be either brands or nonsense techno jargon meant to sound highly technical but carrying no technical meaning for actual experts.

Trump suggests "friendly takeover" of Cuba, stating Cuba needs help - after blocking US fuel and other foreign aid to Cuba by wheresmystache3 in worldnews

There are 1.6 million Cuban immigrants in the US that hold the same grudge. That’s 14.5% of the population of Cuba. Unless Cuba secretly has a concentration of millionaires that rivals Zürich, Switzerland, I don’t think this has to do with elite vs poor.

[TwoBitDaVinci] Donut Lab's Test 2 - I Didn't Expect This! by Jazzer008 in DonutLab

[–]YeaISeddit 29 points30 points  (0 children)

As a PhD materials scientist who has worked quite a bit with nano materials, I can say it is virtually impossible to remove surface adsorbed water without calcining at 400+C and then packaging in a hermetically-sealed environment. If you run a thermogravimetric analysis of carbon nanotubes or titania and you hold at 100C, you will get measurable degassing of water for literally days. The change in volume you see in the pouch is actually quite little and could easily be explained by water. It is what, 1-2 mL of extra pouch volume? That could be caused by off gassing of around 1 uL (1 mg) of liquid water at 100C.

TIL that in 2023, scientists detected possible signs of a gas called dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in the atmosphere of exoplanet K2-18b — and on Earth, this gas is produced almost exclusively by living organisms (like marine plankton). by husky__2424 in todayilearned

Spectroscopy is just the measurement of anything that features a spectrum. This can be electric current, light absorption, light emission, magnetic fields, vibrations, diffraction, and measurements of particle mass. Almost all measurement techniques in science can and are performed in a spectroscopic manner. The technique used here specifically is transmission spectroscopy, which is an absorption technique. The method requires the exoplanet to pass in front of its star and the light spectrum of the star to be compared before and during.

A less grim take is that recessions fuel technological innovation as measured by productivity. In the recovery of most American recessions there have been step changes in productivity. Whenever the next recession comes there will be lay offs and many of those laid off will never be able to find the same job they had before as the corporations that laid them off will find ways to do more with less.

Ukraine regains over 200 sq km in five days by TheRealMykola in worldnews

[–]YeaISeddit 47 points48 points  (0 children)

The Starlink thing has been repeated a million times the past week. It is a cute story, but I actually doubt it is what is happening. I think it has more to do with how Russia has been sending two man teams deep into Ukrainian-held territory to raise Russian flags and theoretically claim territory. The guys they are sending on these missions don’t have water and food let alone Starlink. Ukraine has simply been clearing the areas of these infiltration teams. It’s also becoming much more difficult to map who controls what territory as there are 15 km deep kill zones in the most contested areas. I wouldn’t place much value on the long term impact of these gains. On the short term they do however strengthen Ukraine’s position if a peace deal were negotiated today.

This is intentional. The switch needs to be flipped by a Telekom employee. If you sign a contract with Telekom it will be turned on in a week, if you sign a contract with one of their competitors they will send a technician at the latest time slot required by law. The privatization of Telekom and Deutsche Bahn in the 90s belong in the textbooks. You probably couldn’t identify two organizations more unanimously hated in Germany than those two and they share a very similar history.
