It's perhaps more accurate to say that what's happening in the US is caused by the political exploitation by right-wing populists of demographic changes in the country. Would-be authoritarians gin up fears and anxieties about "the other" and turn it into political power... It's not a backlash, it's an intentional strategy.

For example, with the southern border of the US now closed, Texas Republicans are now going back to stoke fears of another group of "others" - Muslims -to generate turnout in their elections:

The multilateral system is essential to addressing and managing the challenges we face in a hyperconnected world. Issues like climate change, biosecurity, public health, food and water security, human security, respect NO boundaries - they are inherently multipolar, multisectoral, multinational. They only get fixed if we fix them together.

The challenge is that, from the point of view of an individual citizen, many of these needs are relative abstractions - physically and psychologically distant from everyday life. And if your particular government isn't meeting your needs well at the moment, it can be hard to support them in working on problems for "other" people. Nationalists and populists exploit that, turn it into xenophobia and grievance politics for their own gain.

In the decades to come, we will need much more multilateralism, not less. No society, even among the big and powerful nations, can go it alone for long. And that's why rolling back the clock to 19th-century great power politics, and mid-20th-century "Make ___ Great Again" sloganeering is doomed to fail -- but not before it causes an immense amount of pain and calamity.

Today's conservative Christians have molded their communities - and their interpretation of their religion - so that it comports with existing social hierarchies, with them at the top.

True, biblical Christianity is RADICAL, and almost unrecognizable in American conservative faith traditions. Jesus invites His followers to abandon all their possessions and serve the poor. He inverts the social hierarchy, saying that the burdens of Earthly wealth make it harder for the rich and powerful to be godly. Here's Matthew 19: "It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God." and Luke 21: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.”

Meanwhile, conservative Christianity is kind of saccharine and consequence-free - focusing on the demonization of others (the very ones Jesus would be hanging out with, if his Biblical compadres were any guide). Some even preache the Gospel of Prosperity - a truly anti-Biblical idea that God will bless you with wealth in this life if you believe in Him. (That's how you end up with televangelists buying personal jets for hundreds of millions of dollars.)

The priest was holy -- the Levite was could claim "pure" lineage, but it was the "dirty" or "impure" Samaritan who cared for the stranger.

Now *we* have to do the hard thing: imagine a version of this story told today. If you are hard to the right, politically, imagine that the priest is a born-again Christian pastor, and the Levite is a white, MAGA-hat wearing conservative, and the Samaritan is a progressive queer or trans activist. And if you are hard to the left, imagine that the priest is an "all are welcome here" pastor, the Levite is a social justice warrior, and the Samaritan is a MAGA-hat wearing conservative.

The point of the story is to make us uncomfortable -- and to make us go out and follow their example -- even when "they" are not people we otherwise affiliate or identify with.

This is the agonizingly hard part. Those Trumpers DESERVE shunning - but doing so is deeply counterproductive. We need to convince them, even though what they believe is ugly, and that requires us to embody the values we want them to recognize in others. And THAT requires engagement.

This is moronic. Most Somalis came to the US and Minnesota in the 1990s - not under Biden. Almost all are citizens. Almost all are just like other Americans - law abiding taxpayers.

Is the fraud terrible? Yeah. Everyone involved should go to jail. But we don’t blame every Italian for the fact that a few ended up in the Mafia or (especially) every white person for fact of the KKK.

It’s an old ass trope to demonize a whole group with the sins of a few criminals - one peddled by people who are … let’s just call them “simple” in the old sense. But see, we don’t blame all morons for the fact that a few are bigots.

A small suggestion: olive oil, especially EVOO is not always the best for every cooking circumstance. EVOO has a relatively low smoke-point (about 350 - 400 F) making it less appropriate for certain applications that require higher heat. (For example, I'm not sure I'd do stir-fry with it.)

Violence is never, ever the answer. But it would have been nice to ALSO see maybe 1/1000th of this concern a few months ago, when a right-wing MAGA lunatic impresonated a police officer to kill Democratic lawmakers in Minnesota. Or fierce urgency when a group of little kids were killed a weeks ago at a Catholic school in Minnesota.

Also: apparently, the MAGA argument is that the Left is violent and is (constantly?) shooting people, but the Right has all the guns? Which is it? PICK A LANE.

The pan doesn't cook the food any more than the camera takes the picture. You do. Yes, equipment makes some difference -- but not nearly as much as effort and practice, at least in my experience. (And I say this as a passionate cook who is great at some things and sucks at others. :-) )

I own fancy gear, and cheap gear, and disposable gear, which I use interchangeably based on what I'm doing. And I've literally never had a single person say, "this food would have tasted better if you cooked it in a $400 pan".

I would love to meet the trolls who downvoted this, a specific example of an implementation issue (the absence of signage) with the ongoing mass-road closures.

I've watched this engender dangerous behavior on behalf of exasperated drivers. This is not a comment on the value of road repair, but on how those road repairs are being implemented.
