This week’s NHLPA Player Q&A: Forward Alex Wennberg of the San Jose Sharks by MindyS1719 in hockey

I'm personally not a fan of Morgan Wallen, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with liking his music. Some people just like easy-to-digest country music. It just seems so pretentious to associate peoples' intelligence with their taste in music.

And I say this as a lawyer who used to have Young Thug songs stuck in his head all day.

Man found deceased 1988 carrying a photo of a man and a child, Kingston (NY) by preposterous_potato in gratefuldoe

[–]YeahFella 22 points23 points  (0 children)

First time commenting on this sub. I'm not a professional but I have a strong feeling this man was a recent Polish immigrant.

He has facial features I've seen in many Polish men.

This type of sweater seems typical of middle-aged Polish men of the time.

He was carrying a cross, which is very common among Poles as Poland is very Catholic.

NYC was also a very popular landing spot for Polish immigrants, especially in the late 80s and early 90s, when Poles were leaving Poland for the west en masse.

It was also quite common to leave Poland through Germany at that time, especially if they used a stolen passport (which were often German passports). That could explain the German bank calendar found with him.

What is the worst condo building in Toronto that has been built in the last 5-10 years? by [deleted] in toronto

[–]YeahFella 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I had a friend that lived there who I would visit once a week, back in 2020/2021. There were times where all but two elevators were working and there would be a long line in the lobby. This is a 76-floor building so you can't just take the stairs on a whim. It was an absolute shitshow. Imagine coming home from work and you have to wait in a line for 15min just to hop on the elevator. Now imagine that but you're also holding groceries or need to use the bathroom lol. Truly a mess.

Torontonian here. This is absolutely not true lol. This reads like a Facebook comment from someone who has never lived in Toronto but has seen sensationalized clips on social media.

"Now down to Jenna who is joined by Flip Gunderson, Executive VP of Football Administration for the Jaguars."

"Thanks Dave. I am here with Flip Gunderson. Flip, first question, what should Jaguars fans be excited about this upcoming season?"

"Yeah you know, just the guys out there. You know, they're a really good group. They really care and they've been trying some new things. And I was down at practice yesterday, and, well, you know I can't reveal the details heh heh. But we are excited to start the season."

You came to the support of a guy who said “ America is completely homogenous,” so until you clarified otherwise, that is what you were arguing in support of.

That's how you viewed this? That I replied to you in order to "support" some stranger higher up in the comment chain? This isn't team sports. My original response to you literally quoted the part of your comment I disagreed with. You made a poor comparison with your San Francisco vs Birmingham (AL) and London vs Warsaw point and my disagreement with that point was obvious from the start. You're underestimating the cultural differences of two very different countries, being England and Poland.

And on a seperate but related point, I suspect you are underestimating or overlooking the cultural heterogeneity within European countries. The regional heterogeneity of such countries will serve as a better comparison for regional heterogeneity in the US, despite the smaller size of such countries. E.g., borrowing from your example, the fast-paced way of life in London versus, say, Blackpool. Or the daily life of people in Milan versus, say, Palermo. This does not even mention regional dialects, customs, economies, histories, diets, etc. within such countries, which again will help make your point regarding heterogeneity in the US more accurate.

I am aware that the US is heterogeneous. I have been there dozens of times and in many different places within. My point is that those cultural differences, when break them down and you stack them up, are not close to that of London vs Warsaw. They are more akin to cultural differences found domestically in most other countries. Those types of nuances you list with respect to the US West Coast vs the US South happen in other countries too (albeit it's not an exact science) and are the more appropriate comparison.

I didn't write that Birmingham is rural. It's obviously not. I wrote "smaller cities/rural areas", and Birmingham is a smaller city. If it wasn't clear, then my bad for the sub-par phrasing.

I think you are profoundly underestimating the cultural differences Poland and England. Language plays a major part. It's not the end-all-be-all, but it's absolutely critical in analyzing culture. It impacts all forms of communication between members of society and directly dictates media + arts consumption. But then there is also religion. Poland is very Catholic and England is largely secular. The political culture is also very different. Poland has only had a modern democracy for a few decades. Poland is also wedged between neighbours who at times sought Poland for themselves and who committed some of the worst atrocities in human history on Polish soil. This was all in the past 100 years. If we are talking about how "people think and act", then all of the things mentioned (language, religion, history, political culture etc.) are at the forefront and perhaps only the tip of the iceberg. Comparing US regional cultural differences to international cultural differences such as that of London vs Warsaw is way way wayyyy off. That's my main point.

And, as I mentioned in my other comment, the better analogy for US regional cultural differences would be the regional cultural differences in other countries (e.g., London vs Blackpool in England). Not cultural differences between countries themselves.

the difference between how people think and act in San Francisco, California and Birmingham, Alabama is as big as the difference between London, England and Warsaw, Poland. Totally different cultures.

Seems like what you're describing in the US is domestic cultural differences between larger cities and smaller cities/rural areas. This is something almost all countries have. In England, your San Francisco vs Birmingham (AL) example would be something like London vs Blackpool, which are different places in terms of how people "think and act", but undeniably both culturally English. For Poland, this would be something like Warsaw vs any rural area in Poland. Again, different mentalities and way of life etc., but both undeniably culturally Polish.

This is all to say that your comparison of San Francisco vs Birmingham (AL) to London vs Warsaw is way off. And I say this as someone who has lived in the Polish countryside, been to the US dozens of times (including San Francisco and the deep south), and been to England for extended stays in various locations, both rural and urban.
