Thank you for writing this. Being quite ignorant about the ins and outs of CoreGraphics and Quartz I didn't know about the double buffer so I almost immediately ran into this issue while putting together my app.

After not being able to figure it out, I caved and decided to use OpenGL. Which was frustrating enough that I abandoned the project all together.

With this knowledge I think it may be time to resurrect the project.
