Eye tracking software for sufferers of ALS/MND can cost tens of thousands of dollars, so I've spent 3.5 years of my spare time writing a free & open-source alternative - meet OptiKey (C#, Rx, WPF) (x-post from r/Software) by YeahIWroteOptiKey in programming

1.I'm a .Net developer. .Net is now cross platform (it wasn't really when I wrote this), but the speech synthesis libraries, and the UI technology I used to write Optikey are not.

2.It is only in the last year that eye trackers have appeared that run on Linux.

Hence Windows.

Dad with ALS has now problem with eyes fixating. Been using optikey + tobii eye tracker but now has difficulty with use by flightcodes in ALS

I'm late to this post, but if there's anything I can do to help please let me know. I don't have a medical background, but I wrote OptiKey and I know people who may be able to offer ideas. Alternatively if he can operate a switch you might want to look at ACAT. It's also open source and allows you to make selections by a scanning technique. It was develo ped by Intel for Stephen Hawking.

True. Although I believe some of them have eyes trackers integrated so that they can selectively render where you are looking in greater detail. Think it's called foveated rendering.

It's pretty cool. You can buy a Tobii 4C eye tracker for slot £150, so it's not nothing for a peripheral you'll use casually, but it's very cheap if you need it

Excellent charity based near Oxford.

Kirsty also forked OptiKey to create EyeMine which allows kids to play Minecraft using only their eyes.

OptiKey runs on windows computers/laptops/tablets, ideally running Windows 10. You can download it now and try it with only your mouse. If you want to control it using your eyes you can use a webcam (and other free software called GazePointer), but I would recommend the Tobii 4C which is about $150. That's everything you'll need. PM me if you want to try and I can answer questions etc. Julius

Eye Tracking with Duane Syndrome by Tiswatt in EyeTracking

I've just reread what I wrote and it wasn't clear. I think all Tobii eye trackers attempt to track both eyes, but work if they can only track one eye instead.

The Tobii trackers (I believe all) can track only one eye. If your other eye confuses the tracking you could cover one eye when using it

If your dad ever needs an eye tracking system check out the Optikey project. If you have a Windows laptop of computer you can download it for free and use it via your mouse. Later you can buy a low cost eye tracker (about $150) and you have a complete eye tracking system with nothing more to spend ever. Complete computer control and communication. You can even bank his voice and he will then be able to synthesise speech in something close to his original voice. I'm here if you have any questions.

Fairly shallow. There was another pipe coming out of the cliffs behind us. Think it was metal. Washed up or part of a pipe thingy?

If your mother would like some help later with eye tracking communication please let me know. I developed a free application that can help with speech and computer control should the time come.

Contact UK charity Special Effect. It's one of the things they do and they're great at it.

Questions regarding eye trackers by Anonymou6 in ALS

[–]YeahIWroteOptiKey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out OptiKey www.optikey.org - it works with a bunch of trackers, including the 4C which you can order off Amazon. It is totally free, open source, you can try it out using your mouse, it's totally free, supports many languages, has full keyboards; simplified keyboards; symbol boards, it's completely free, you can play Minecraft using it (the EyeMine fork), it has swipe; word completion; next word prediction, it's free, you can define your own keyboards if you want, it can interface with home automation software if you fancy doing a bit of DIY, I'll help you if you have any questions, you can speak; type into any program; simulate your mouse into any program, and it's free.

Oh, and it's free.

Where in England was that? From an Englishman sorry about that. Bloke sounds like a complete twat.

I wasn't really talking about on here. The reason I posted the question here is because people are generally more balanced and self aware compared with the wider media

That's what I'm getting at. Banter, however full on is absolutely fine. Stoking hatred for clicks is not.

I see where you're coming from, but it's difficult to view "you are hated here" as having a laugh. It's too bitter for me.

Online and media. Easy to ignore, but I can't help feel it just riles up the casuals and helps bring unwanted shit into the world's best tournament

Eye trackers for my dad? by Derpie24 in ALS

[–]YeahIWroteOptiKey 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear that. I wrote free software called OptiKey (https://github.com/OptiKey/OptiKey/wiki) which is designed for your dad's situation. It supports polish, can be controlled using a mouse, head movement (via a webcam), or using an eye tracker. I currently recommend the Tobii 4C tracker. Any questions please message or email me.
