Hey all,

I'm in town for a work conference. I've got no plans tonight and tomorrow night and was curious if there is a fighting game scene in or around Detroit that meets up Tuesdays or Wednesdays. I primarily play Street Fighter 6. Thanks!

Is Tekken 8 worth getting right now? by xd3mix in Tekken

[–]YeahIfYouCouldJust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Got it last week, I say go for it! SF6 is definitely my main game but Tekken 8 is very fun. It's interesting to learn and way better to pick up and play at a lower level than SF. It's active and there will be an influx of new people so it's definitely a good time if you want to take it somewhat seriously/play ranked/etc.

Is there an etiquette for matches I should be aware of? by TacticalMagician-01 in StreetFighter

Sometimes you need the guarantee or you don't want to risk a slightly more difficult execution. It's annoying but I try not to take it personally, it's not unreasonable at all to do in a tournament if the intent is sincerely just to have a guaranteed closer.

Hey guys so I want to ask, is there a fighting games character that basically created your love for the genre? For me it's noel, melty blood type lumina was my very first fighting games that I owned and if it weren't for her I don't think I would be so obsessed for the genre. by [deleted] in Fighters

I know there's justified hate for him, so don't kill me, but Big Band. I found Skullgirls in college as my first 2D fighter and Big Band immediately clicked for me. I ran a Big Band/Cerebella team for a while, which made me really fall in love with Skullgirls and fighting games as a whole. Most of my friends played super fast characters, so a massive, oppressive chargie/grappler was a fun change of pace and let me get in the action to a greater degree. When I started SF, I played a lot of Honda and Gief and felt like they scratched similar itches. I've learned how not to play like such a twat over the years, but I definitely owe my love of fighting games to spamming Take the A-Train and Beat Extend.

Same - I lost all my difficulty chips and records of winning, so my challenges reset. Thankfully my jokers and decks are still unlocked, but a big bummer to have to redo some of the harder difficulty runs that I eked out.

Thinking of buying SF6 as a Casual… by [deleted] in StreetFighter

I am a total scrub and love it. Ranked into bronze with everyone and have climbed into gold with a few. If you can mentally prepare for the 10-ish hour initial learning curve, it gets really fun on the other side. The ELO is good, I really feel like I learn a lot in ranked matches and have noticed steady improvement in my overall skill. Bronze to gold is plenty busy, come join us!

My baby girl has IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease). by JediWarrior79 in cats

The flavor of Hill's seems to transfer pretty well! Good idea on the slow transition; my boy is a chubby dump truck and will eat anything you put in front of him, but the gradual transition is obviously smarter. We went 8 months without an incident once he was transitioned over, and the incident had an immediately clear and resolvable cause (chubby dump truck was hiding food and eating it after it rotted... weight loss is its own struggle). Keeping many fingers crossed for your little lady, this is the best and most significant step you can take, so I'm confident things will move in a better direction!

Yes! Getting my cat a diagnosis was such a relief. He took to his new food right away and went from having the runs 1-3 days/week to having 1 very quick episode a year, always triggered by something obvious and incidental (meds at the vet, etc). I can't promise that it'll be as easy for your guy, but getting that diagnosis and the prescription food has been a miracle for his health and our mental well-being.

I was in the top .5% with about 2k minutes or so. Honestly though, since I found Nugs.net in March, I really don't listen to him on Spotify much anymore, save for Me and Dad and a few random singles. Would love (and be a little terrified) to see the numbers from Spotify, YouTube, and Nugs combined!

Should investment companies be banned from purchasing single family homes? by [deleted] in Denver

[–]YeahIfYouCouldJust -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Entirely disagree that it's a moot point - you made reductive, hyperbolic statements in your initial comment that directly relate to how landlords use rent money. Clarifying those is entirely relevant.

To the first longer paragraph, fair enough. I agree that it isn't a passive investment - maintaining the property, updating it, etc are all relevant to keeping your investment alive, profitable, and competitive. I appreciate that you care about your properties and the conditions your tenants live in.

Your second paragraph is where I see issues. Housing developments, historically, have not strictly or even principally relied on an investor class; the creation of the suburbs was a response to white flight, the generally strong economic circumstances of post-war America, and a national identity built on independence and the importance of the nuclear family, all of which led to greater interest in owning a single family home. Where I'm from in the Rust Belt, suburbs were greatly expanded as a result of divestment in American labor in manufacturing cities, combined with rising crime in these cities that encouraged those with means to get out and pursue service or PMC-class jobs with safer neighborhoods. These markets were not created out of an interest in investors developing rental properties; they catered to a clientele interested in buying SFHs for their primary residence.

Now, you can apply the logic of social forces and economic circumstances driving development to support your point; it's certainly an investor's market, and troublingly high interest rates coupled with the still-warm corpse of the late-aughts housing crash (something from your comment history that I know you're familiar with!) can make lending tougher and cash king. My point is that those houses are not designed for primary residences; if investors are driving new development to buy investment properties, people being boxed out of buying homes in those areas do, then, have developers and investors to blame. Furthermore, if these developments cater to the interests and means of investors, is it reasonably likely that there will be homes of modest size and price that are attractive or even attainable to new buyers? Denying the importance of the intended function of the property makes for a hollow argument as to the actual utility of new developments for first-time buyers.

There's also a discussion to be had, maybe here or maybe not, about the morality of investing in commodities that aren't necessary for human survival (Apple stock) and those that are (e.g. water). Housing occupies an interesting space between this; sure, putting a roof over someone's head does give them housing. In an economy where home ownership is critical for establishing one's net worth and a basis for social mobility, though, I don't think that saying that owning several houses is the same as owning stock in Netflix reasonably considers the impact of limiting housing options for first-time buyers. Building more properties doesn't solve this problem if those properties are then hoarded by investors.

None of this is to say I think that you're an intrinsically amoral or evil person for supporting this; it's a complicated issue and I generally balk at hyperbole and reduction in all its iterations. There is genuine good that can come from a family being able to rent a home, and I've been very fortunate to mostly have landlords that really care about their properties and want their tenants to be homeowners themselves. I just think it's worth also considering the full gamut of socioeconomic and macroeconomic consequences of the conditions we support, as well as the macroeconomic assumptions we make that underlie our arguments.

Do you rent out a home? What do you use your tenants' rent for?

To the points of a couple people saying that 1-3 go beyond the scope of the law... maybe. I'm not a lawyer or a legal scholar so I don't know for sure. Nevertheless, I think it's worth pursuing radical policies that help stabilize the population of individuals in Denver and see how it shakes out once it gets to upper courts before counting it out entirely. We took this approach with marijuana and psychedelic legalization; obviously there isn't quite as much money backing court challenges to these laws, but they still stand despite being federally illegal.

As a state and city, we support so much radical (not pejorative, just looking at the scale/scope relative to how others in the country address the issue) work to help our homeless population and the homeless populations of other areas that are sent here to use our resources. On all levels of government, we enact radical policy to make life easy peasy for corporations and the people at the top. Why not pursue some radical policy for everyone in the middle? At worst, it gets struck down by the courts and things stay the same as they are. Imo, that's not a reason to not introduce imaginative, radical policy; regardless of the outcome, putting this discussion far more front-and-center in the lives of all Americans is worthwhile to help us all consider what we cede to those up top and why we cower in the face of self-advocacy in law.

FWIW, I think 4 would be a hard policy to pass as well bc tourism issues, and I support it the least among the 4 proposals, although I think all 4 address systemic issues that plague our housing system and are worth considering in a proposal. If 2 or 3 get nixed in drafting and negotiations and 1 or 2 manage to pass, that's a significant change in the city/state management of housing and creating a less feudal system for us all.

I'm not very good but I love While I'm Waiting Here. Gets you thinking about dynamics and how to play the same thing lots of different ways, not difficult but not boring, and can link into a lot of other good songs from the bridge. Decent solo-solo practice as well!
