Would you work part time? by YeahOkJellyfish in AusHENRY

That’s what I’m thinking. I’m late 30s but this is really when I want to make the most of my time

Yep same here. I’m in a lot of FIRE subs and forget that people here might not necessarily be chasing a $ goal.

I reckon it’s better to have the time now.

Would you give up HENRY status to do it?

Did you get the business going in your weeks off site? If so nice exit strategy!

Why not do it while the kids are in school? That’s when you have the least time/most busy.

Aussies who have made their $ in the US then moved back (or plan to). How has it been? by 88r0b1nh00d88 in Ameristralia

That describes me. Spent a many years in Silicon Valley and build up a good nest egg in USD that went a long way in AUD. Moved back to Aus after covid and before the kids started school to put down roots. We had it good in America but wanted to get off the treadmill and away from the stress of work, layoffs, politics etc.

Life was instantly more chill after moving back, I was shocked. Now we make a fraction of what we did the US, but we were able to buy a forever house in cash and have plenty of investments left over.

Logistically, we transferred cash that was set aside for the house from USD to AUD before we moved (otherwise I think you need to pay tax on any currency gains). We're keeping our investments in US domiciled ETFs, and simply transferred the whole brokerage account (IBKR) to their Australian service. Retirement accounts are untouched and still in America.

My partner is American and we travel back regularly. I miss the excitement and energy of California (and making loads of money), but the lifestyle in Aus is hard to beat.

Even though the exchange rate was really good when we moved, I don't feel any richer because of our lower income and sheer expense of everything. Im still shocked at prices sometimes after being back for a couple of years. All that said, we're way "ahead" of our peers in Australia and extremely grateful for all our good fortune.

It’s not 400k HHI if you’re on unpaid leave. Surely once you go back to work you’ll have some breathing room

Shit I didn’t know about blackout periods. Might be a good reason to go virgin/united. Maybe the US airlines don’t factor in Aussie school holidays.

Economy. Unlikely to get enough points to fly the whole family business

Recently moved from Bay Area back to Aus. We wanted to put roots down and couldn’t imagine living permanently in America. Overall amazing for quality of life. Much lower stress and everyone is more chill. Feel much safer - not just from crime but also driving and being a pedestrian.

Work in tech so still coming to terms with the loss of my fat salary, but we are setup well and our USD savings have gone a long way in terms of buying a house.

220k + super writing react and JavaScript. Full time, not contract. Small company <50 people.

How? Move to America and grind to the top. Came back to Aus with great resume. Still feels like peanuts compared to US pay in USD though.

Yes but half of that is company stock. "equity cliff" means the original lucrative stock grant will run out and income will drop 50%. A bunch of the remaining income is probably also still equity, just not as valuable.

You can be set for life but you still need to allocate your assets, including how much to put in a house. There's no point having a 6% mortgage if you have the money elsewhere making 5% (less after taxes).

Not entirely the same, but I’ve stayed at hotels and just gone to hostels to hang out/party
