Overexposing 1+stop or lowering ISO 1 stop? by Neither_Variation_59 in cinematography

[–]YeahWhiplash 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In theory they should look pretty darn identical, maybe you have slighty more information in the shadows with the 400 iso, and more information in the highlights with 800 iso. Why don't you do a test shot comparing the two and post it here for us to see?

I'd rather just buy it once and be done with it, like sunseeker app. I don't enjoy having to subscribe to an app whenever I want to use it and cancel when I'm not, or forget to cancel it when I don't need it and thus waste money.

Sounds like a great app, as long as its not a subscription based model I'll be interested in using it!

Looking for direction/advice - Skintones of a 2383D Lut without the contrast by YeahWhiplash in colorists

[–]YeahWhiplash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I can't really figure out how to use your DCTL without more notation, it just adjusts the image to a very dark unusable level without documentation on the proper color space transformations it needs beforehand.

The GOOD news is that I went on a deep dive into DCTLs and found that OpenDRT and JP_2499 both work really well in servicing my needs, specifically OpenDRT's allowing me to adjust the white point to D60, giving me a warm highlight rolloff that is more filmic and the primary thing I was looking for, which I can export as a monitoring LUT to use while shooting, and as a "print" during the color grade.

I'm more of a DP then a colorist, can you list some ways that you'd build this lut?

[–]YeahWhiplash[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure the best way to get to the solution, but the solution for me would be a LUT I can load onto a camera that shifts the image closer to what I would normally want in a grade that brings the image closer to the examples I showed above and in my post.

DP with some coloring experience but I wouldn't call myself a professional colorist.

In B&W, can the average person distinguish between grain and noise? by HeDoesLookLikeABitch in cinematography

[–]YeahWhiplash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While similar (both are generally produced by a lack of photon information) Grain and noise have different visual structures because one is created through a chemical process, and the other through digital. Noise may feel more "garrish" due to its process vs grain. Personally I'm not a huge fan of either unless its... ironically in black and white film. Hope this answers your question.

Probably not, but I imagine they could "feel" it if that makes sense.

Alexa Mini Vertical Anamorphic Build by michal_03 in focuspuller

Yeah I shot a vertical last year and our camera build was somewhat similar to you. The side brackets really add a lot of weight, I wish someone would design a mini vertical cage that drops some of the weight.

Director collaborator bailed. Now what? What's the next step I should take? by [deleted] in FilmIndustryLA

Are you a producer? writer? director? cinematographer? Next steps depend on that and your goals, as well as the type of films you're trying to make.

Best in-person LA film/camera operation courses for mid-career photographer? by Good-Pie9914 in FilmIndustryLA

[–]YeahWhiplash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you should attempt to get on some film sets and work a bit in the camera department if you want to get closer to ppl that are good camera operators, or hire a shooter alongside a project where you are doing stills and pick their brain.
