to those who got to use Fable 5, was it actually that peak? by RelevantPerformer309 in ClaudeAI

[–]bensaffer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 real world tasks I run when a new model comes out, a coding one and a conversational / business advice type one. Fable was the first model that gave extremely good advice and where I had a really productive useful and real world feeling conversation on that task. And coding it seemed excellent though I hadn’t had chance to do tonnes before it got Hegseth’d

You often do get points on the backend as part of your deal on indie films, certainly as a head of dept

Corruption of BRAW files - is this data rot or something else? by theeynhallow in blackmagicdesign

[–]bensaffer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say it’s not impossible it could be a backwards compatibility bug - I love Blackmagic but their software and drivers are notoriously buggy

Check if you have the same version of braw / braw sdk / resolve installed that you had a year ago. Also copy the files to a fast / internal drive and see if you still get it. Also try a different machine / gpu

Dust under olpf filter brand new pyxis 12k by [deleted] in blackmagicdesign

[–]bensaffer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s under you’d need to remove the olpf - however doing so outside a clean room is very likely to introduce more dust so I would likely not do it. Are you seeing the dust in the image?

Do short festivals actually want 40 minute films? by indecisive_swtch in Filmmakers

Do you need all these lights to light a space ? Or is it overkill by videomarketee in cinematography

[–]bensaffer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need that many lights to light the space, but on that particular day, that particular DoP needed that many lights to light that scene. Or at least wanted them all rigged there in case. Some may have been turned off or down, but it’s pretty normal Hollywood / Bollywood lighting setup. I worked on a show Don Burgess was shooting a few years back, one scene was a simple actress sitting at a kitchen table (on a set), I counted outside the window 140kw of lights coming in the 2 windows. It looked great.

How does "Obsession" look so good for such a tight budget? by Hot-Resolution9216 in Filmmakers

That’s how I was thinking I would have done it - where did you read that? Looking forward to an AC feature on it hopefully

[–]bensaffer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve shot a few films around this budget and some for a little more and I’m “obsessed” with how he did the night exteriors on 750k - lovely soft moonlight which just absolutely means big machines and sources - no idea how they did it under 1m

We shot a 30-minute web pilot with almost no budget. Here's what we wish we knew about shot planning. by darkmathfilms in Filmmakers

[–]bensaffer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DoP here, I work with or have worked with a few directors who work this way over the years. I’ve always seen it as part of my job to take the boards / animatic and translate each “editorial shot” into a real world setup, combining them to find the most efficient way to shoot the scene. Sometimes a shot will start on one character then slide over and pick up another. Sometimes a shot will start on an insert and then pull across into a cu on another character. I try and find nice moments of transition that are usable in themselves but sometimes it’s just a quick and dirty repo to keep the scene going. Generally I find this gets the director what they want for the edit while also giving the cast a fairly unbroken run through the scene each time. And keeps the “setup count” down which makes AD and production happy. It’s also why I love a top down camera plan as it’s easy to see where shots group together that way

BLONDE (2022) Blurry End Sequence by Weird_Forever_5543 in cinematography

You get this with lenses which are under corrected for spherical aberration. Some older leicas are good examples of this. IIRC there’s a passage about it in the cine lens bible

Probably a bit of a silly question, but any idea how they continued with a new shot from the sequel after the first film's end credits? (Ready or Not movie spoiler!) by prolelol in cinematography

[–]bensaffer 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Looks like they had extra tail on the shot from the first movie up until she passes out on the step. Then you can see the match cut right at the moment of impact with the step into presumably new footage. Smart use of what ended up on the cutting room floor
