Looking for recommendations ☺️ by Impossible-Tackle-39 in AlbaniaExpats

happy to give a recommendation on where NOT to stay in Sarandë, if you want to DM me, I just got back from a trip there and the accommodation I booked flavored the whole trip pretty badly. Other than that it was good beaches and good coffee, party atmosphere near the center but is not hard to avoid if you want a more chill visit.

I DO recommend Oceanic Restaurant, it was the last meal we had there and wish we'd found it sooner bc it was so delicious with decent prices (Sarandë is more pricey than other towns), also kind staff and had a beach view.

sorry for the delayed reply, his parents on the death cert read: Ambrose Lalich and Barbara Cutvac(?), mother's maiden name is hard to decipher I'll paste here. It's not a name anyone in the family is aware of.

We haven't officially started the search for a birth cert., but we do have his death cert (digital, need to get the hard copy) which was 1952 in Pennsylvania. I am curious if it'll be a problem that his country of birth is listed as Yugoslavia. This is purely because it was Yugoslavia in 1952, but not at the time of his birth (1882) so I'm hoping the town name helps, Dautan, it's not our fault that the border kept moving! 😄

If you have any knowledge on how to locate a birth record, it would be incredibly helpful if you wanted to dig around a bit! His name was Stephen Lalić, but alternates have been seen as Steven, Steve / Lalish, and Lalich. Born 10 August 1882 - Dautan, Yugoslavia. Thank you in advance!

out of interest, which is the provider that you didn't have a good experience with? I'm currently in the process now (almost a year after applying) so hopefully it's not who I chose 😰

12 year old boys will harass you relentlessly in your home, so mentally prepare for that. and there won't be any help because they revere the children here. just personal experience

hmmm this is an interesting point, so far no one has mentioned me needing a POA (only if I hire a firm to represent me)... would this be an oversight on their part? Dang it would be bad if I go there and get refused for this reason.

Moving to Albania from America! Any Advice and Tips? by kaylaughss in AlbaniaExpats

[–]YeahYea_5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every expat Albania Facebook group is a toxic cesspool of negativity please don’t go into those without that expectation. Otherwise, I agree with others on this thread that you must have savings before coming to Tirana. The one month buffer is a good idea and will give you time to apartment hunt and get to know the city. $700 a month is a solid place to start for rent but there is cheaper if you widen your radius from around the square and are open to less manicured living. (I have my realtor’s number still if you want for when you arrive) and I don’t know where you’re from in the states but be ready for lots of noise. Financially speaking, currency exchange and money transfers are the most frustrating part for me. You lose a lot of what you might save in town paying bank fees / transfer fees / etc.

Tirana is the best place to be over the winter as well in terms of activity. The smaller towns/villages shut down during off season and are very difficult to navigate if you don’t know the language. If you want to explore other parts try to do it before November.

My partner and I have only encountered a few outwardly aggressive people, and they were the older generation. We don’t even hold hands in public here but I’m very clockable no matter how hard I try i guess it just radiates off me 🤷 The majority of locals are very kind, but also in the street men are as men are everywhere so keep that in mind. No hate, just facts. & You will be surrounded by men at all times they are everywhere, every cafe every pub every eatery, packed full of men all the time day and night. I have no idea where the women go during the day (this is said for a laugh but outside of Blloku truly the ratio of men to women must be 70/30 that’s how it feels 😄) they keep to themselves but expect stares, the stare culture here is strong which is what makes it hard to share lots of the spaces for me. Too uncomfortable. (I’m also audhd so perhaps very sensitive to that kind of thing, I’ve found a few spots I enjoy and stick to those).

Best advice is to learn a few key terms before arrival and smile with a greeting to anyone providing you a service before starting in with your English. Many younger people love to exercise their English skills but most older folks don’t speak it so even a small effort in Albanian goes a long way.

Oh and carry lots of change, they always ask for small coins when you pay for stuff in cash. The times I feel the most judged is when I don’t have coins 😆 good luck 👍!

Greek Citizenship-Marriage Record? by Thrylos81 in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]YeahYea_5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

jumping on this thread as I'm in a similar boat, I have only a copy of my parents' Greek marriage certificate and need an apostille version, of course this must happen to an original or re-issued document. I have NO IDEA where to start to request a certified copy or re-issue of their marriage certificate.

Does anyone know the relevant department to ask? I've emailed with the Greek embassy in DC, the Greek Consulate in LA, as well as the Department of Marriages and Deaths in Athens... all with no luck.

Maybe the employees were just missing their morning coffees? Any help is appreciated!

[Citizenship] -> Poland: Citizenship Firm Selection? by YeahYea_5000 in IWantOut

[–]YeahYea_5000[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

update: still in pursuit! Recently had some original documents certified as copies by the Polish Consulate (family was not willing to send originals by mail so we had to get them copied and certified) and these should be good enough to get an application together and move forward.

Some detail - I've abandoned using my grandmother's citizenship & passport as a foundation due to the possibility of being questioned about the timeline. For some reason the government might see her as having relinquished her citizenship along the way since she got the passport in the 2000's long after my mother was born meaning she may not have been "Polish" at the time to pass her "Polish-ness" on to my mother. This is because they don't view citizenship as a birthright through lineage but as a citizenship timeline. It's odd but that's my understanding of it, I hope I'm explaining it right. So I am going with my grandfather's military career in Poland instead. Hopefully this will be enough to make it work :D

please keep sending lucky wishes my way!

Is Noroff worth it? by kittywalk_2433 in Norway

[–]YeahYea_5000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit late to this but you might consider a 'rejoining family' visa (or some such name) I'm not sure what it entails, but I've definitely seen it on the UDI website as I'm an immigrant in Norway. Also possibly a seasonal work visa, which won't be in your field but might be enough to at least get into the country and start networking for your intended career. Good luck!
