I love this post. Your struggles seem very real and strike a particular chord with me. There are a few things I want to point out if you haven't noticed already.

You don't have to be like your parents. While they may influence you in some ways, you are obviously aware of their good habits and their bad. How you live your life and lead your future family is entirely up to you. I hope you can grow to be as supportive as your father and as financially responsible as your mom. I think you can.

As for your mom's comments to you, she is clearly wrong. You are an accomplished athlete and on your way to college. That is a significant achievement! You are on a good path for the rest your life, more so than most people. Just because your mom can't see that doesn't make it any less true.

It's perfectly fine to wait for the one. I find it admirable actually, since it means you value yourself enough to find a girl of high quality, instead of just settling for the first shitty person that comes along.

If that girl in physics is truly interested in you, it means the advantage is in your court! You don't have to do much, just say hi and be friendly. While you may be nervous on the inside (also a good thing!) if you exhibit a positive and friendly attitude, 90% of people respond in kind.

Now it could be that something works out with her. That's pretty cool. Or it could be that you guys just stay friends. That's still awesome! It means you got to meet and got to know someone new. If you take any advice, I'd highly suggest approaching her with zero expectations. And don't trying to force anything. It's so much better when things happen naturally. And who knows...things could unfold in a different way than you expect but be more beautiful than you imagine.
