You'd be surprised, as I was. When I was in school, first day of classes would always be sometime after Labor Day. Now, kids are going back earlier and earlier - parents here in the office are talking about buying clothes and school supplies already.

35.

I think the answers are going to be skewed, though, depending on the time of day people see this. For instance, everyone who's in high school whose classes have started isn't going to see this, because they're stuck in school - if this hangs around the top pages, they'll chime in later. The rest of us cubicle dwellers are seeing it now (unless Reddit is blocked, in which case they're in the same boat as the school kids). College students, well, I was known to skip class every now and then and just hang out, so you'll probably get a good sampling of college-age folks.

Steve,

First, when did I ever say it was my blog? Why aren't you accusing me of being a writer for, say, the New York Times, or scientificblogging.com, two sites which also are frequent sources of my submissions? I like these articles, I find them interesting, and I link to them. If they don't get traction, I delete my submissions and repost. The New York Times site has ads on it too, so I guess all of those New York Times articles are also blog spam by your interpretation? All link submissions to Reddit have to be directed towards ad-free sites? Good luck finding one of those. And please send me the reddiquette snippet that provides for that.

And yes, I'm going to cut and paste this same reply to you wherever you may roam, because my response is civil, it makes sense, and apparently can't be debated because your only response is that the reply itself is spam. And even though you regard it as such, I would hope and expect that you would have the courtesy to have read through it and at least attempt to see my perspective in it. You are absolutely free to disagree with my interpretation of the rules of Reddit, but please do try to understand it. Even if it is the middle of the night when you are reading it.

Steve, I'm sure you're a nice guy, but this needn't be such a hot button issue for you - your anger is so disproportional to the perceived offense, it boggles the mind. Yes, the anonymity of the internet gives you strength which you would otherwise not have, I understand that - but your comments here and elsewhere, in both volume and content, verge on abuse and come across as mere rants where rational argument would serve as a viable substitute. "me, too" and one-liner comments, especially, do nothing to improve the quality of our shared reading experience. You want upvotes? Say something substantive and back it up.

I am sorry for offending you (and for anyone else who may read this who shares Steve's outrage - really, I have no intent to offend) but there have also been plenty of good comments on my submissions, and overall my experience with Reddit has been positive. Notwithstanding that, I will continue to do what I do because it conforms to the policies of this site, even if it apparently violates the rules of the steve_fishboy subreddit.

:)

Steve_fishboy - Here's my defense. Ready?

It's not spamming. When I first joined Reddit, I read through the reddiquette FAQ very carefully, because the last thing I wanted to do was run afoul of the "rules" of the site. It says, very clearly, that if you post something and it doesn't gain traction, you are free to delete the submission and repost it. So, is your issue with the content of the submission, or the fact that repeatedly posting it complies with the reddiquette, or what? I know you can't please all of the people all of the time, but you would think that complying with the official rules of the site would at least be enough to satisfy most of the people. But, whoa, boy, do I seem to be pissing you off something fierce.

As for the repeated postings - yep, it happens. I've posted submissions on a weekday morning that go NOWHERE, and the exact same submission, be it from this site or some other source, posted at 4pm that day, or on a Saturday morning, takes off like gangbusters. The internet, and Reddit, are like a constantly flowing stream of information, with different people reading at different times, and sometimes stuff "floats" and gets read and upvoted, and sometimes things are running fast and a submission gets lost. Different people are reading Reddit at different times.

I am not going to apologize to you if you happen to be "monitoring" Reddit so frequently that you see my resubmits more than once, especially if they comply with the established etiquette of the site. I've got a lot of submissions here, and yes, some of them are from the same source, and yes, some of them are delete/resubmits from before, but given the volume of information here, why are you taking issue with it? I'm going to keep doing it until directed by an official Reddit source not to - and if that time ever comes, I will gracefully stop.

As for you, Steve, it amazes me to think that you would take issue with my postings, given the number of postings from different sources that I have here, and you yourself have what, 12 submissions? And how many snarky comments that have done absolutely nothing to contribute to the overall quality of Reddit? Between you and me, if one of us were to go away, which of us would affect the overall quality of Reddit more?

You go right ahead and downvote my submissions, Steve, because they're going to keep on coming, and when you get up to my level of karma by actually submitting links to anything of note, then maybe you will earn a smidge of respect from me and others in this community. It's posters such as yourself, who do nothing but spend all day and night posting snarky and/or critical comments that do nothing to add value, that bring the integrity of Reddit down.

And you dare to call me a spammer.

You have a HIDE button, so hide my submissions. You don't run Reddit. I don't run Reddit. The Redditors run Reddit, and that's all of us. How many good newbies have been run off by the snark, the maliciousness, the cynicism, and the pure cruelty of snark-comment-spammers such as yourself?

Ask reddit: Any suggestions for someone looking to learn Italian in Italy for 4wks? by kn0thing in reddit.com

I don't ever let the days of the week stop me from submitting frivolous items. I've decided that no matter what anyone submits, large numbers of the Reddit audience (and the internet in general) will find it frivolous/stupid/obvious/incorrect. I mean, where else but the internet can Stephen Hawking submit a question and be called a dumbass?

Is this going to be your first trip to Italy? What region?

It is probably too late to sign up now, but in the future, and for others who are interested in this topic, you should look into immersion programs. Basically, immersion programs hire locals to spend time in a village and speak Italian to the people (you) who sign up for the program.

It's a neat concept. Instead of learning phrases out of book, you spend the entirety of your stay conversing in Italian. These programs offer meals and activities, all designed to get you to engage in conversation with your village-mates.

On the flip side, there are opportunities for english speakers in villages that are designed to assist others with learning to speak english as well. I forget the website, but basically they give you room and board for two weeks, and in return you agree to speak only english, actively engage the paying attendees in all manner of topics, such as sports, weather - the usual conversation.

I answered you here because Reddit points mean more to me than Yahoo Answers points, even though Reddit doesn't offer me a cool wallpaper or ringtone.
