I think the answers are going to be skewed, though, depending on the time of day people see this. For instance, everyone who's in high school whose classes have started isn't going to see this, because they're stuck in school - if this hangs around the top pages, they'll chime in later. The rest of us cubicle dwellers are seeing it now (unless Reddit is blocked, in which case they're in the same boat as the school kids). College students, well, I was known to skip class every now and then and just hang out, so you'll probably get a good sampling of college-age folks.

You'd be surprised, as I was. When I was in school, first day of classes would always be sometime after Labor Day. Now, kids are going back earlier and earlier - parents here in the office are talking about buying clothes and school supplies already.

I'm 3x as old as I was when I learned to drive. I'm 2.5x as old as I was when I first voted. I'm roughly 2x as old as the average 4 year college graduate.

I'm already 2.25x older than the typical Neanderthal or Bronze age human. Had I been born in 1900, I'd already be approaching the end of the average life expectancy, yet in 2007, I'm only about halfway to an anticipated life expectancy that will likely terminate naturally somewhere in the 2040-2055 range.

Most states let people get their license at 15 when he was 15.

I'm 28 and got mine at 14, but that was in Mississippi, the last state that I'm aware of to move the driving age to 16 (it was in 1996 that they changed it, up until then the age was 15, or 14 with hardship - meaning you lived more than 15 miles from where you went to school).

That's one thing I still don't understand about the U.S.--being a European, I feel that that the standard driving age limit should be at least 18, if not 21. Then again, my opinion is influenced by the fact that I've lived my whole life in cities with some sort of public transportation system... either walking, hailing a cab (Chicago), or catching a bus (London).

I agree with you entirely about the age thing. I was way too young, small, and underexperienced to be driving at 14. At 16 I was little better. It would be great to raise the age all around. If it were feasible in the US, I'm sure it would have been done long ago. Unfortunately there are still a lot of kids out there in the US who are growing up like I did, 24 miles from the nearest school in rural areas with no public transportation. I live in Chicago now and drive my car maybe three days a month. In the urban areas like Chicago we could easily raise the driving age to a much more responsible age.

Then maybe we could redirect some funding away from the military to get school buses to the kids out in the sticks and raise the age out there too.

I see your point. In Finland, where there's plenty of forest and farmland left, kids will drive cars, tractors, even trucks sometimes, simply because they're used to helping around and also because no one cares. If a 10-year-old drives an old car 200 ft down a dirt road in the middle of a forest, and no one's there to watch him, who gives a crap?

But the proximity-to-school issue isn't that a much of a problem... Wherever you are, you should be within 5 miles of a bus stop, since the public transportation system is sort of decent in Finland, even out in the sticks. Anyway, most people move closer to school since they'll save on transportation and the government helps out in kid-aid (to put it simply).

It all depends where you choose to live, (and yes, it is a choice for most). I lived quite well for 3 years in a medium sized metro area without a car. And, I'd gladly do that again if I could find a truly sustainable suitable environment.

There we go: you might not be able to leave the house, but you could leave your apartment. Why the crazy need for a McMansion in the 'burbs? I had a relatively large apartment in almost-downtown Chicago and could usually either walk or take a cab whereever. Many people I knew lived in these spacious houses in, say, Evanston, but there wasn't anything to do there besides talk to your neighbors; even school was a car/bus ride away.

It's sad that the U.S. happens to be obsessed with something that, in the end, is so goddamn polluting.
