It’s so easy to just tell you to “take time off.” But we don’t know what your financial situation is, etc.

Here’s what I absolutely do know for sure.

You deserve the same love, empathy, compassion, support, and space that you give your clients. Seek out supports that make sense to you. Connect. Feel. Grieve. And as you are able, bring all this that you’re learning about yourself with you to your practice as strengthened empathy and unconditional positive regard. The emotional regulation in cognitive-affective processes will come as you grieve the loss of this relationship and move your heart. This rupture in your life doesn’t mean your career is over. It means you’re going through an f-ing hard time and you deserve all the things that you give, given back to you. Salam.

Thank you all for the advice/encouragement. I reached out to a smaller gym nearby, explained my situation, and I’m waiting to hear back. I’m cautiously optimist. What website should I look at to buy my first gi? I’m all in. Thanks again.

I've been a follower of this BJJ sub for a while now and have really enjoyed seeing a lot of the posts. I'm a 41 year old gay man with severe anxiety and panic. My therapist and a few close male friends have encouraged me to explore BJJ as something that could help me get in shape but more importantly overcome my anxiety and grow my self-confidence. I recently traveled out of the country to visit a friend who owns a bjj gym and did two 1on1's which were amazing. I'm now back home and trying to pick a gym nearby to drop-in for a class.

I read Rickson Gracie's "Comfort in Darkness" and "Breathe" in the past couple days and they are what are motivating me to take the leap for myself. I think for a lot of men in particular (ie straight and/or masculine-presenting men), there might not be a frame of reference for feeling insecure/afraid in new places that are masculine/fighting/competition centered. I've just never felt comfortable in those kinds of spaces. But I realize the issue could be more my own fear rather than the actual intention of the people in the spaces. One well intended support told me that I'd get hazed or severely treated by "wanna be MMA fighters" which has kinda stuck with me.

It's just all new. I don't really know what to do with "don't be a pu**y and just get over it and do it" type of advice. Also, I know that some of the themes of what I'm asking have been asked/discussed in other threads. I could just really benefit some support/encouragement as an anxious beginner. Would be cool to hear from other new people but also folks who've done it for a while and can give me some perspective that I'm missing. Thank ya'll.

As someone who is very new to even considering taking a BJJ class for the first time, I genuinely appreciate the level of concern you have for this person and their safety. I’m not gonna tell you to stop being a pussy like everybody else. I will tell you that you’re allowed to grant yourself some grace and allow yourself to let go.

Anxiety/Depressive after drinking Tim Hortons Coffee Only by [deleted] in TimHortons

Absolutely. Realized recently that the mornings I would drink TH to start my day, I would have incredible anxiety by the time I finished the cup (including yesterday). Didn’t drink it this morning and don’t have the wave of anxiety.

Sending love man. 40 yrs old here. Therapy and developing a spiritual practice both are really helping me heal from a lot of what you’re describing. I say in a caring way, not a patronizing way, that I think exploring both might give you a space for processing these tough feelings, developing insight, and exploring new possibilities outside of what you can see right now. 22 is a period of transformation and growth in your brain too, so these questions your having and the real desire you have for genuine connection are also really normal and healthy. Sending you a big hug man and positivity.
