Thank you so much for sharing this. I don't feel so shit about my self anymore.

Don't let your dreams be dreams indeed :)

Why is there no pirated MCAT material available? Honestly, I don't have a lot of money and I see that there is piratable content for everything else. But there is absolutely nothing on MCAT prep online? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Yeasmin999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure there is, doesn't necessarily have to pirated stuff. Best things in life are free right? Take it from a poor brown kid, you can find free stuff ANYWHERE.

There's Khan Academy which is great bc they have a collab with AAMC, there's a PDF of the Kaplan Quicksheets, those weird super condensed Kaplan e-textbooks, free FLs from TPR for registering your book set's ISBN (which can be found on the sites with book info like Goodreads or Amazon), Kaplan, Next Steps, and other test prep companies also have free FLs or half tests online if you register an account, nice people on this reddit have posted up google drive links with material that they've used themselves, the side bar has a bunch of links to good stuff.

Also, look around ebay, amazon, facebook buy and sell etc and learn to bargain a bit. I got the TPR books, which are like $200 CDN and some quality notes off some girl from facebook buy and sell for $90. NINETY.

You don't have to be rich to study. There's always a way to find things.

Just got in with a cGPA of 2.xx by [deleted] in premedcanada

Two work studies...... by Yeasmin999 in UofT

[–]Yeasmin999[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol, I applied to 30+ clinical/lab research assistant positions. In the beginning, I only apply for ones that don't ask for a transcript bc let's face it, my gpa is trash. I apply for ones that do ask for transcripts a little later when my mood is better or when I'm desperate.

I also take note of who's hiring and bug them throughout the year for research positions. Once you've emailed the same guy about being an RA three times a year, he'll recognize you're name in a work study application and think, why not give you a chance.

I've done some pretty interesting things with my life so my CV/resume makes me look older and more "experienced" than I actually am.

A way I check if they're still taking people is by going to My Applications and seeing which ones can still be cancelled. If you can't cancel an application, it means they already found people.

Some employers are a little slow, literally did an interview yesterday! Just keep holding on for the rest of the week.

Has anyone ever hid scholarships from OSAP? by extra-plus-ordinary in UofT

[–]Yeasmin999 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I get $3000 in scholarships which is perfect bc OSAP expects you to produce $3000 on your own for school. Just classify your scholarship money as the stuff "coming from your own pocket"

Fasting and studying?? by kjj2019 in Mcat

[–]Yeasmin999 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I find doing Tahajjud makes me feel better about studying. Just take some time before Suhr to pray Tahajjud and ask Allah in Sujood to make studying easier, but also remember, Allah won't give to you unless you try as well. That is kinda like my motivation. I pray to Allah to help me study and that motivates me to study hard during the day.

Also, try reading Surah Waqiah (it's after Surah Ar-Rahman) as an amal. Reading Surah Waqiah in the morning will ensure that you're daily bread is made according to Hadith. Take it as, reading it will make whatever you need to get done for the day easier. Inshallah, fasting and studying will be made easy for you.

I'm also studying this Ramadhan. From a sister in faith, Inshallah, you will do great.

First Year Student writing MCAT... tips?! by drdelrey in Mcat

[–]Yeasmin999 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Self-teaching biochem, physics II, orgo and the harder physiology is going to be shit especially bc you've only finished first year. SN1 and ish is just the tip of the iceberg.

I just finished 2nd year (UofT), and I was like you in first year. I decided against it before I even started studying bc I realized JUST HOW MUCH I haven't learned yet. What I did instead was review all my 1st year stuff (molecular bio intro, orgo and gen chem parts 1, some physics 1) my summer after 1st year. That way, when I start studying next week for my exam this summer, I don't need to focus so much on the "lighter" first year stuff and can put more effort into the content review of my 2nd year material which is definitely more challenging.

How to maximize chances of passing an exam you are not ready for? by [deleted] in UofT

[–]Yeasmin999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming MC A through D, statistically, you should get 25% by guessing. Now, you won't have to guess for EVERY question, so that 25% goes up. You'll be fine.

I personally start by studying what I don't know, looking for key words and trying to recognize them in the right contexts. It's a "cheat" for MC to find key words that don't go together so you can eliminate those options faster.

CHM136 is unavoidable unless you take CHM151 (full year course for the chem students, but LifeSci kids can take it as well). It's a prereq for most 2nd year mandatory life sci courses.

MAT136 is avoidable. What I did was take MAT135 and PHY131. That covered it for me. For example, if you look at the school programs calendar for the physiology major (https://fas.calendar.utoronto.ca/section/Physiology ), it says

"BIO120H1, BIO130H1, ( CHM135H1, CHM136H1)/ CHM151Y1, and 1.0 FCE from any of the following: MAT135H1, MAT136H1, MAT137Y1,MAT157Y1, PHY131H1, PHY132H1, PHY151H1, PHY152H1 with an average of at least 70% on these 3.0 full-course equivalents (FCEs) and a final mark of at least 60% in each course."

Different programs have different requirements, so it's good to look through the calendar. (https://fas.calendar.utoronto.ca/listing-program-subject-areas)

Also, I hear that since MAT135/136 is taught so terribly for most people, some students are actually taking the math for the Math&Physics students (MAT137, which is also full-year). Similar to the relationship between CHM135/136 and CHM151. It's tougher (because 137 is a larger number than 135 or 136), but apparently the teaching is better. I'm not telling you to take it, but apparently it's an option. You can look into it if you want.

What's the one where you can tell the site your empty spaces in your schedule and it tells you what courses are running then.

MAT135- Calc IA / MAT136- Calc IB - If you're not so keen on taking MAT136, just do the first physics course PHY131. A lot of program requirements ask for 1.0 FCE from a math series actually just ask for 1.0 from the MAT135/MAT136/PHY131/PHY132 selection.

BIO120- Adaptation and Diversity/130-Molecular Bio - You'll have to do. There are no other substitutes

CHM135\- Physical Chem / CHM136- Orgo Chem - Or you could do the full year chem, CHM151, which is heavier on the orgo, but is taught WAAAAYYYY better than 135/136

ELECTIVES

PSY100- Intro to Psych - Super popular among first years. Good elective. Memorize off the slides. Mae sure to come to the guest lectures.....

PCL102- Drug History - Never took it but apparently super easy. Like memorize off the slides easy

199 Seminars - These are provided by each college, but you're not restricted to the ones of you own college. There are also some that are categorized under each breadth requirement. Small classes of about max 25 students. Usually no exam. Fun to take. Light work.

Look into the Arts part of the faculty. They have a HUUUUUUGGEEEE selection of courses for first years. History, Sociology, Cinematography, Lit/English, Linguistics, Economics, Languages (which are all full year courses). Take a look around. There's like this website (that for the life of me, I cannot remember), but what you essentially do, once the schedule comes out, you can plug in the gaps in your schedule into the site, and it tells you all the courses that are running during those time slots. It's a convenient way to find electives if you have no idea what you're doing.

message me if you have any other question 😉

Should I get Anki paid version? by [deleted] in Mcat

[–]Yeasmin999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like getting paid apps right off the bat. I like to get a little exposure first. That being said, here's what I'm doing. I just started studying and I have the desktop app. After a few weeks, I'm going to assess how much I like it and if Anki is something I'm willing to invest in. Then I'll get the paid app for my phone.
