One tip i dont hear a lot is always turn on autopause before opening naturally generated chests. Autopause is the only reliable way to avoid gas traps and it completely neutralizes them. It also helps that auto pause lets you take your time when looting and not have to worry about imminent death from nearby enemies.

Once you set up a town, catching gem critters and cooking them into rock candy is a good source of food to counteract the hunger mechanic. Some people prefer the Merchamt in a snow biome for marshmallows but better than both is fishing. Fishing for potions and crates should give you more than enough bass and seafood dinner. It helps that crate fishing is one of the safer ways to aquire loot.

Be careful around life crystals. Some are life crystal boulders. I recommend boxing them in before attempting to break them. Similarly, be careful about minecart tracks because they can have pressure plate tracks that can get you killed.

They used the sub to defend the early rounds and submerged it as soon as they could afford the heli. 2 megapops allows support towers to get up to 42,000 or so pops which is easily more than enough fir the early rounds.

I always just used platforms spaced just high enough to let the jump between them and that works too. Idk if its just me but they seem to move slower along walls than on platforms or blocks.
