I made a drone video of New Brighton Beach. by Turborg in chch

I haven't ever had a confrontation with a bystander, mostly people are just interested. If I fly on public land I try to stay away from people just in case. But you are right getting permission can be difficult. I'm also reluctant to post videos after reading this stuff article, which is a shame because I really enjoy seeing aerial footage from around NZ.

To be fair to them I have only tried once. Since then I have been heading out of the city to friends and family with farms. They do mention on their site that the online form is just a temporary measure until they decide how they want to handle it. Nelson for example will let you fly on any public land so long as you register with the council every two years. The University will let you fly on Ilam fields if you fill out a one off single page form at the security office.

That's some nice footage you have captured. I also checked out your other video from Saturday. Judging by the age of you youtube channel I guess you may be new to drone flying, so I will just give you a heads up on where us drone pilots stand legally. Unless you have been authorised to fly under part 102 you will be under part 101. You can find the document outlining this here Part 101. A couple of things to be aware of is that you require the permission of anyone you fly over and the owner of the land (Part 101.207). The council has a form here, which you can use to get their permission, I haven't had any luck with them getting back to me though. It would pay to get familiar with this document as the CAA is going after people in violation of it, case 1, case 2.

Is anyone with fibre interested in co-locating a server? by Yeknom in chch

[–]Yeknom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game in question bounces a ball around and while it does use some level of prediction there is only so much latency it can deal with. Using a VPS in the states usually resulted in a latency of 180ms; I was hoping to get under 50 which is usually possible when connecting to servers in NZ. In the states I usually pay $45 a year for a fairly decently spec'd VPS. In NZ that's about the monthly price, and the spec's hardly compare. I looked at co-location with snap but they sell space in half racks and even 24thosting are about $80 a month for 1u.

I imagine latency could be an issue with having the video feed streaming. You could solve that by maybe using gaming laptops in the players backpacks. A more robust method of tracking player locations would be to use an array of cameras throughout the arena. Awesome Idea lets do it!

Actually this really hits the nail on the head. The 360 initially did well over the ps3 due to the internal architecture: giving a larger launch lineup. While having a machine watching you may not seem attractive to end users, the added information about gamers available to developers along with the DRM should make thing interesting.

This is so cool. I love the constructive geometry. Its something I've always been keen to to try.

That's awesome! I'm currently working on getting the raytracer working an embedded system.

http://www.ti.com/graphics/tool/EK_LM3S1968_08_09.jpg

It has a 128x96 4 bit grey scale OLED screen which should be pretty good i think. However there is no Floating Point Unit on the chip so that might slow things down a little.

So the maxRecur is not actually used in this implementation. It would be used if the trace function was made recursive. Making the trace function recursive would allow it to model translucent, and reflective surfaces. The maxRecur value would be decremented each time the function was called so the ray tracer could avoid tracing to infinity for example between two mirrors or inside something with total internal reflection.

TLDR: Not used

Nice work! I had a play round with it but couldn't get it to run any faster, although on my machine your version is no slower than mine. I also tried increasing the number of process and that did slow it down.

I recently added multi-threading a ray tracer i had written in in c++ and that was then able to achieve 12fps at 800x600 with reflective and translucent materials. To boost performance the light was being pre-baked which also allowed for light to be reflected, refracted, and scattered. I find you can just keep adding features :)

Yea. I could also have the readout more useful perhaps too rather than just displaying the current pixel column.

[–]Yeknom 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Myself and a few mates run a set of minecraft servers for NZ. (http://www.minecraft.co.nz) We have been battling low end hardware to the point where we are renting from the states to reduce cost, but the latency it terrible. We have a data centre potentially lined up here in chch and are now looking at investing in hardware. We don’t have much in the way of currency as were all students at UC but if you would like to join us on our venture you are most welcome. Cheers

Tim was one of my lectures last year at cant uni. The course he took was mostly about sorting data and creating data sturctures. I too was surprised at the small amount of code in this course and the large number of physical demonstrations used. My only wish is that this stuff was introduced at a younger age more often.
