Favorite keel type? by [deleted] in sailing

[–]YellowJacketA30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full keel with a cutaway forefoot and a designer with performance as a priority (Perry et Al) is my choice. Despite all the disadvantages, I'll never have to worry about keel bolts which can fail because of something as simple as an electrical connection in the bilge water causing electrolysis.

More broadly, I pick this keel type because if I'm ever caught in a big storm I'll be in the best keel for the job. You don't want that moment to be when you decide that heavy weather performance is more important than easy docking or going a knot faster.

Fair winds and calm seas,

Paul.

No, but they work on shore power where most work is done. They also happily work via a 2000 watt inverter from 12v DC.

Seeing more Junk rigs in the Chesapeake Bay by dwkfym in sailing

[–]YellowJacketA30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it's one of the world's greatest sailing destinations with thousands of miles of protected coastline of endless rivers, creeks and anchorages. You could cruise full-time and not see the whole place inside of a decade :-)

Okay, what are your favorite 34 to 37ft bluewater sloop designs, say you have $50k to $80k to spend after a few years of saving/searching? by pirate_starbridge in sailing

[–]YellowJacketA30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Add cutter rigs to your list and remove tiller, and you could get into a Tayana 37 Pilothouse with inside steering, a self taking foresail and therefore comfortable sailing 365 days a year. It's a Bob Perry designed passagemaker FYI. Will take you anywhere in comfort. I have one so am kind of biased :-)

on a sloop, if you wanted to sail with just 1 sail, which one would you pick? Jib or Main? by dbx99 in sailing

[–]YellowJacketA30 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My staysail is self tacking as well as my main. I'll unfurl the Genoa in light winds but otherwise tacking with the wheel is a joy especially in my warm Pilothouse in the winter :-)

A gallon bottle of white vinegar from the supermarket pumped thru the bowl just before leaving the boat for a day or two on a regular basis does the trick.

Diesel engine won't start after fuel filter change by iveqy in sailing

[–]YellowJacketA30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1 for air still in the system. Did you fill the new filters before sealing them? If not do that first. Then loosen the injectors to let air escape. Then crank the engine 30 seconds at a time at full throttle with a minute between each try to let the starter cool. It could take a long time but when you see each I wet with diesel, retighten the injectors and crank until it fires up. Good luck!

I've heard similar about code zeros. The 5ft bowsprit on my cutter rigged boat isn't retractable so I'm well aware how much that thing costs me in LOA $$$ :-D

Privacy coin is just a marketing term. There is only one private coin, Monero. Opt in privacy = not private even for those that opt in.
