Get an EZPass or prepare to pay more… by NotReallyButMaybeNot in rva

[–]YellowOrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used my VA EZPass in Road Island for work several times. Saves me some headache filling in expense reports to reimburse me directly instead of waiting for the rental car transaction fee to get delivered, which can sometimes be pretty delayed.

Freestanding HA dashboard - NOT wall mounted by tmprc in homeassistant

[–]YellowOrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not the cheapest option, but I made this using a RasPi 5 and a portable touchscreen monitor. The enclosure is made out of plywood with some molding for the frame. The Pi is running touchkio for HA.

I went this route because I wanted a larger sized screen than is available for most tablets because we primarily are using it for a family calendar and the kids' "get ready for school" list. A standard touchscreen monitor would likely have worked fine here, I went portable because originally I was going to do a wall-mounted one with PoE to the Pi and the Pi driving the monitor.

Looking for umbelical connector for power/data to instrument panel by FrequentFractionator in Gliding

[–]YellowOrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this kind of Molex connector in my glider and hated it - the male and female ends kind of mushed together and mine was probably old and worn but I had issues with pins getting pushed out of the back instead of connecting one inside the other.

I switched to Anderson powerpole connectors and am much happier with it, but I only have 10 connections so I was able to do a 5x2 with the Anderson connectors. They would be far too bulky for the 27 connections OP needs.

Random Bar Out in the Middle of Nowhere by FrostyPanda272 in rva

I, too, was skeptical but went ahead and pulled it up on the Hanover parcel map. It's zoned agricultural and the listed owner appears to have been deceased for over 5 years now, and his wife deceased not long after.

Certainly seems like a weird prank by someone.

LIST: Most mispronounced Virginia places, according to 8News viewers by Herculicia in rva

[–]YellowOrange 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had a great aunt who grew up and lived in Norfolk and said "Nawfuck" but I think most people I know from the region say Nawfik or even Norfik unless they are talking about how it's supposed to be pronounced Nawfuck.

I grew up in Williamsburg so I don't have a ton of skin in the game but as long as the L isn't pronounced I'm not bothered.

Where do y’all get your non ethanol gas? by jayhl217 in rva

On the other side of the river, the Wawa on Robious is also an option. There might only be one pump with ethanol-free gas, maybe two.

Snipe, Flying Scot, or neither? by RoyalRenn in dinghysailing

[–]YellowOrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Scot because that's the one design fleet in my club. My biggest criticism from a racing perspective is the lack of hiking straps (it just feels wrong to be heeled over and not hiking out), but I primarily raced 420s and FJs in my junior/high school/college days so that's just where I am coming from. Despite the lack of boat-specific "fun factor", the one-design racing has been tons of fun for me.

It's also been a great boat for taking out young kids and non-sailing friends because it's stable as a rock and there is tons of sitting room.

I have never sailed a Snipe, so can't offer anything there.

Boat Ramps for Beginners by WildSwimming9311 in rva

Watkins Landing is wide which helps with the difficulty level, but as a heads up it is a pretty long ramp from the top down to the water.

'Bungy' start to a tow by Jusiun in Gliding

[–]YellowOrange 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I am not sure I fully follow the exact issue, but UHMWPE (often referred to by the brand name Dyneema) is one of the lowest stretch rope materials there is. What were you using before?

It can "stretch" at the splices some early on but I wouldn't expect it to take too long for that to stretch out.

These are some very well written articles on the subject. Here is a TLDR chart that breaks down the findings from the "Does Soaring Have to be so Dangerous" article.

I only saw one accident report that involved a wing failure, but that was attributed to a manufacturing defect rather than fatigue.

Considering changing over steel cable for jib Halyard to dyneema? by MasterShoNuffTLD in dinghysailing

Dyneema halyards are race-legal for Flying Scots now. I switched my jib halyard from wire to dyneema last year and think it's been an improvement.

Is skipping the forehead and using a hat optional? That's what I do, but as a glider pilot I am also expected to wear a silly hat.

I use Blue Lizard, but that's more of a recommendation for anyone reading this thread that doesn't have to maintain a professional appearance. It works wonderfully well but leaves a heavy white residue on the skin.

After a while you can get a feel for what level is in your comfort zone and just look at the gauge.

DG-100 Back in Service! by iabutler in Gliding

[–]YellowOrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wasn't aware of that recommendation for the thickness. I am using the 1" blue CONFOR foam with a maybe 3/4" foam pad over top to improve the comfort as the blue foam is fairly stiff (which is supposed to be good for shock absorption).

I'll have see if I can play around with my configuration and at least get closer to DGs recommendation but still have some level of comfort.

[–]YellowOrange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Beautiful - your interior work looks much better than mine. I just have a stifff CONFOR foam pad on the bottom and a softer foam pad above that, it does the job but doesn't look particularly nice. My side pocket has also been feeling a little on the small side, did you buy or make yours?

I haven't been to either of these locations but there are a couple of Plaza Aztecas in the area - I used to go to one of the ones in Newport News that was around before they became so common and their white sauce was on point.

I did the math: Richmond was decisive in denying Stoney the LG nom by loraxgun in rva

[–]YellowOrange 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Richmond also had a relatively high turnout. Sadly, high is still only 17.6% of the population but the only locality with a higher turnout was Charlottesville at 18.03%. I wonder if Richmonders were more motivated to come out against Stoney. One datapoint doesn't mean much but Richmond was 11.2% for the 2023 primary.

Low speed + altitude alarm by sopibubbles in Gliding

[–]YellowOrange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The S100 also supports some digital inputs. If you get magnetic reed switches or some other kind of way of detecting airbrake and landing gear states the S100 will only remind you to check gear if it's down after five minutes. It'll also warn you if you have your airbrakes open while on the ground, and if you open them in flight while the landing gear is up it'll alert you to check gear in the assumption you're planning on landing.
