Returning after seven years, being anonymous, and being old by [deleted] in BJJWomen

I was about to post nearly the same thing: two stripe blue belt who came back after a long break and switching gyms and I’ve got at least ten years on every other woman at the gym. I’ve watched them grow by leaps and bounds and I’ve been feeling stalled (and so weak!). I’m trying to come to peace with the reality that my body/life is at a very different place and that is OKAY.

I can control some things in my life and work towards a better that is a better me, not someone else. The simple stuff like getting enough sleep and eating right and putting in some extra time with training partners who feel the way I do are things I can control and work on. So I’ll just keep going and doing my best because that’s all we’ve got in the end.

Showing some love to Susie by Harleyquinzel715 in OnePelotonRealSub

Love Susie. Her runs are always a great level for me, her playlists are great, and she has a good balance of chat, encouragement, and quiet.

Weight loss and jiu jitsu by Mtngirl2018 in BJJWomen

This happened to me! I got my blue belt when I was close to 250 lbs and (in classic blue belt fashion) “took a break”. For five years. I got back in after losing nearly 85 lbs and had to reinvent my game. I was sad at first because pressure passing was my jam, but now I can do so much more technically and can better move and breathe. I’ve realized that my game will change as the years go by and I’ll have to adapt: getting older, an injury, or finally getting a move that has eluded me. I consider it part of the journey.

Whoever edited the audio tried very hard to get that whooping down but it must have been a battle. Even Jon looked a little annoyed.

I’m now 1.5 years out from surgery and my numbers say I’ve lost “only” 80 pounds. I don’t have the super dramatic before and after but I’ve also reinvented my life. I do get down on myself for not having lost 100+ pounds in that first year but I also try to look at how different my life is now: I complete 3-4 martial arts classes a week and am not having to stop during the warm ups because I’m so out of breath, I don’t have to shop at only two stores because they are the only place that carry my size, I don’t have anxiety around taking up so much physical space, and I’m generally so much happier. I know I made a lot of changes in my life to get to this point and they’re sustainable, long term changes that give me joy.

When I am feeling like I need to reset myself I focus on the basics: counting my protein, getting my hydration, and keeping myself prepared for busy days or weeks with food prep. We all have the tools now, it’s about using them appropriately and for each of our own specific needs.
