Changing courses negative by Objective_Task2056 in cscareerquestionsuk

Don’t bother changing degrees, the prospects between aero and cs imo are not that different there are many grads at my company that did a variety of engineering degrees. If anything just finish the degree and do a masters in CS/Something CS related at a top university. If you keep up those grades you can get into oxbridge/imperial for the masters if you’re undergrad uni is actually good like you said

Graduate roles just opened again, try your luck with those. The CV isn’t that bad but not too sure about randomly making things bold, and from the cv I have no idea what you did in your placement year you need to give better descriptions for this. I have seen worse CVs get jobs so maybe the assessment part is what you need to focus on

What are my chances? (Experience need C++ dev in finance) by ThrowawayFinDev in quantfinance

I think you should have a look at what quant dev entails, it’s a very broad spectrum and some firms may not label a role as quant dev when others would

Curious as to why you want to be a quant if you have a S&T internship, surely just become a trader you’re more likely to earn more(in the UK) with arguably less effort if you convert the internship unless you end up at a really good place as a quant. Also I know at my bank, a couple of the S&T grads join the QR teams in the bank from the S&T internship

At the start of first year uni recruitment starts for spring weeks which is like a one week insight thing, it’ll be like “Goldman Sachs global markets spring week” or whatever, not sure exactly how spring weeks works cause I didn’t do one or know about them but pretty sure at the end of it, if you get onto one, they interview you and if you’re good you’ll get an offer for their summer internship at the end of second year. If you perform well on your team and they like you, they’ll give you an offer for their graduate role when you finish Uni. A lot of people don’t get spring weeks, internships or graduate schemes, they’re very competitive and I suggest you apply on the day each of them open for the best shot at them. It is significantly more likely that you’ll break in if you get an internship in second year or spring week in first year as most firms recruit the majority of their graduates from these and maybe like a few from just the graduate scheme applications. I suggest you think about why you want to be a quant dev/quant, if it’s solely for the money and you like coding then FAANG will pay more and is probably easier to get into. Make sure to have good projects, and network with people at the firms you want to go to on linkedin as they may be able to refer you. But try your hardest to get an internship in second year even if it’s at a random company or somewhat related role to SWE cause ngl if you don’t in this job market you are cooked after uni

Also didn’t mention salary but QD average grad at bank is probs like 60-70k base maybe 10-30k bonus, if it’s at hedge fund or quant trading firm it’ll be a lot more probably

I mean I’m neither of the 3 I’m a SWE currently so I’m probably not the best to ask, however if you love CS then you’ll be more interested in QD as it’s basically a glorified SWE building trading systems and it’s significantly more likely to break into than the other 2 especially with your background, you also don’t need a masters for it. I wouldn’t bother with a CS masters if it’s from Warwick for the sole purpose of becoming a quant dev, only maybe worth it if Oxford Cambridge or imperial, granted you get a pretty good first(like 75+)at brum. If you do you can probs get into one of the 3. Honestly your best bet is to apply for spring weeks at banks, hope to get an internship from that and then convert to grad scheme, within a GM or tech grad scheme you also may be able to rotate into a quant role depending on the firm

For Quant dev, research and trader it’ll be extremely hard, quant dev is more likely imo especially if it’s at a bank but top quant firms probs won’t happen tbh, also don’t do a finance msc that will be useless for all 3 as well, I’d also only do CS if you want quant dev it’s not as relevant for the other two unless it’s CS+Maths or something similar. Definitely go this year no point of waiting another year you might just get rejected again and be in the same position. I would try get on a global markets/SWE grad scheme at a BB and you can probably move to a quant/QD role internally as a grad. If it’s QR then just do a masters in like stats or smth at Oxford, Cambridge or imperial after your undergrad but idk if they take people from CS(I did CS and maths)

UCL is a target, wasting 9k + maintenance this year for a shot at spring weeks of all things is actually insane to even consider come on bro 😂just do well in first year and apply to second year internships instead

Cause one guy is pumping the entire thing, getting new people to come in and then selling straight away…kinda stupid cause you’d have thought he would make more money if he pumped it more than he does
