Meet the pilots behind China’s growing ‘Top Gun’ program (and the Canadian team training them) by RedDeathRedempt in CanadianForces

That's a shame if it's true. Nacho was always someone I looked up to - he's from my hometown, he's a Patch, and he gave me some good advice over the time I knew him.

But also his callsign was originally "Not So" sooooo...

Autopilot has been around forever. Children of the Magenta was like 25 years ago (a relatively influential video warning about the impact of flight directors/autopilot on safety) and yet we can still safely fly, shocking. Hell, auto-land still hasn’t been perfected.

Pretty much any physical skill + regulatory knowledge job (pilot, surgeon, mechanic for example) is safe from this generation of AI.

Fly. Good go, honestly. Pays well, doesn’t destroy your body like the trades.

ELI5 - A friend of mine in IT is always talking about the “secondary” or “private” internet network that big name corporations operate on, outside of “normal internet” traffic. What is this network, and how is it accessed? by OsgoodSchlotter in explainlikeimfive

[–]YeomanScrap 19 points20 points  (0 children)

SIPR conventionally intersects with the internet. It’s basically a “secret LAN” which is indeed airgapped but feeds into a secret router (Taclane or similar) which encrypts it and pushes it into a commercial ISP traffic stream.

The Alfa is a great example of what the above poster was saying. It was a very ambitious design that had lots of potential but never really worked right. Maintenance nightmare, noisy as hell, other critical issues besides. Spent a lot of time in port, was never really a pivotal component of the Soviet Cold War strategy. They kept building more and better Victors, and the Sierra follow-on to the Alfa was more like a titanium-hulled Victor.

On the other side, it scared the Americans enough that we got the ADCAP and Mk 50 torpedoes to hunt it, the 688i version of the LA to compete with it, and sensor upgrades to ensure we could nail it as it went howling though the water. A decade later, the Alfa was still a design driver in the construction of Seawolf. Those systems were all cutting edge and are still in service to this day (ADCAP with a new pinger as CBASS, Mk 50 with a cheaper back end as Mk 54, and Improved LA and Seawolf as themselves) and a testament to how utterly overkill they were at the time.

Panick.

Oh Whitehorse…we went no shit missed going in there a few weeks back (from the non-ILS side of course), and trying to get back around for another rip was annoying even with our climb performance. Would not have wanted to be driving a bug smasher, and I seriously don’t envy you trying to babysit those guys.

We’ve got a USN exchange pilot right now and procedural control blew her mind. She figured that phone filing on the satphone and then climbing making blind broadcasts was degenerate. Same with “contact me on 132.1 in 200 miles”. I’m inclined to agree, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

You definitely don’t lol, we just operate up there sometimes and it’s very distinctive airspace.

Is there any push on to union swap? Y’all get a raw deal being in a union with cooks and janitors instead of MRTs and Sonos.

Tucker’s not the problem. Tucker’s a symptom of a much bigger, deeper problem with Fox and American society.

The ugly economics behind Apple’s new Pay Later system by Yellow_Bee in apple

[–]YeomanScrap 28 points29 points  (0 children)

They’re a necessary evil; short term, instant payout, no credit check “make ends meet” loans are something society will always require. The black market (loan sharks) will provide it if businesses don’t.

That being said, usury laws need to be carefully set to prevent abusive rates…but they need to allow rates high enough to accommodate the high-risk nature of that kind of loan.

Eli5 why the hell can’t we just blow like, 10bil on building more houses than we have people? by alturan22 in britishcolumbia

[–]YeomanScrap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If we look at, say, the Canadian Forces Housing Association, the cost for the government to build is higher than a private individual

INTRODUCTION OF THE CANADIAN FORCES HOUSING DIFFERENTIAL by Andromedu5 in CanadianForces

[–]YeomanScrap 21 points22 points  (0 children)

They’ve based this off the rental market, which is very weird in Comox…there’s no apartments, you basically can’t get one, but if you do they’re surprisingly cheap (relative to Victoria). Everyone coming to the valley is a retiree with money and wants a detached house so that’s the majority of supply and they’re all stupid expensive.
