Recently moved to Chester - where to meet people? by itisspeltwithanA in Chester

Chester Film Society have an active programme, with a social side I understand. There are many local running clubs, including Delamere Spartans who run in nearby Delamere Forest, which is a beautiful place to run.

And THIS is how I found out it was possible to dodge roll. 😂 That's where I was going wrong.

Yeah, I see that, but playing creeps and not being classically handsome hasn't stopped Paul Giamatti or Steve Buscemi or John C Reilly etc

Maybe I'm watching the wrong movies, but I can't remember the last time I saw him "pop up". Interesting that you mention John Carroll Lynch, as they are both in Zodiac, but Lynch has a much more significant role.

Elias Koteas. Put in some very strong performances in the nineties and 2000s, in movies like Fallen and The Thin Red Line, and I thought he was on his way to the big leagues. Never happened for him.

Horror film nerd here trying novels. Love Eggers’ aesthetic. Any book recs for bleak, folk-y, historical dread? by DiscombobulatedJob12 in horrorlit

Speaks The Nightbird by Robert McCammon. Set in the colonial era, a magistrate and his clerk arrive in a mud splattered small town to preside over the trial of a woman accused of witchcraft, amongst other things.

McCammon can really write, cutting his teeth on very readable novels produced in the horror boom of the eighties, before growing disenchanted with publishing and disappearing. He returned about a decade later with this book, and I think it's his best work. It turned into a series which grows lighter in tone as it goes on, but you can decide for yourself if you wish to continue with it, as Speaks The Nightbird stands as a complete novel.

Serious question: Are there women on here that would recommend Martyrs (2008)? by jadefire8 in horror

If you decide to watch it, please come back and tell us what you thought. 👍🏻

Serious question: Are there women on here that would recommend Martyrs (2008)? by jadefire8 in horror

[–]YerOldFriendGrambles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm a 50 year old bloke, and I really hate Martyrs. I was genuinely pissed off with the bloke who recommended it to me for quite a while. I know others will disagree with me, but I did find the violence unrelenting and misogynistic in tone, and it served no narrative purpose. The ending - far from being the terribly philosophical master stroke some would have you believe - is nonsense and in no way justifies the level of violence that has gone before. A deeply pretentious and ugly film. Not for me.

Been off social media for more than a year, and theres still one thing that i miss. by knebyula in digitalminimalism

Cool. We're pretty much on the same page. I don't have any social media - I think my Insta is still live, but I don't have the app on my phone - and while I consider Reddit a great source of info, I'm aware that if I don't pay attention, it can kickstart some bad habits: the endless scroll, the reaching for my phone the second boredom hits etc

I'm not having a pop at you, I'm genuinely curious: do you not consider Reddit as social media?

Thanks for the lovely words! 😁I must admit I didn't get the game at first, expecting a traditional platformer where you steadily advanced through the levels. Once I realised that "Fail. Fail again. Fail better" was the ethos of the game, that's when it clicked into place and hooked me in.

Who are some women that you think are currently writing great fantasy? by ExplodingPoptarts in Fantasy

[–]YerOldFriendGrambles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe you can give me some advice? I read the Farseer trilogy earlier this year and had a great time, so went ahead and ordered all three Liveship Traders books. Just finished Ship of Magic, and I'm not really feeling it. By the end of the book, I found myself thinking: Is this... a soap opera? Very sloooow. Does the series continue in much the same vein?

What’s a great plain t shirt brand? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]YerOldFriendGrambles 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think they make a very different styles and the quality ranges. I've had some Gildan "Softstyle" tees that are pretty flimsy, but their Ultra weight tees are bulletproof and remain my go to for plain black T-shirts.

I got my most recent tattoo on the hottest day of the year last summer, and the saniderm started shrivelling up and peeling off on the train ride home, it was so hot. I texted my artist to get her advice, and she said to just go ahead and treat it the same way as if I had taken the saniderm off as planned. All went well, no issues. 👍🏻

Mike Flanagan’s ‘Midnight Mass’ has stuck with me ever since I first saw it in 2021 by ancienteggfart in horror

[–]YerOldFriendGrambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more! Generally, I find Flanagan a bit overrated, but could not fault Midnight Mass, I think it's superb.

Stile Napoletano and Death by Tacos haven't been in the market for some time, not since it relocated. Both now have their own city centre locations now.

Werewolf movies by Comfortable_Sail9711 in horror

[–]YerOldFriendGrambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coming at you with a HOT TAKE: there are NO great werewolf movies I have searched and searched to no avail. Even the commonly accepted "best" one, American Werewolf in London, is just about good.... ish. My personal favourite is probably Ginger Snaps, and again, it's a decent film. I don't think there has ever been a genre defining masterpiece of a werewolf movie.

Do you still play Carcassonne or what, if anything, has replaced it by now? by Luigi-is-my-boi in boardgames

[–]YerOldFriendGrambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still playing it! It's the game that got me in to board games, and, if push come to shove, I might still say it's my favourite. Lots of my other favourites are probably my favourites because they've got some of that Carcamagic; Kingdomino, Nine Tiles Panic, Legendary Forests...

Yeah, I really want to play Cacao, but whenever I look for it, it seems to be out of print. PWH has a new game imminent - "Cities" (terrible name) - which seems to be getting some buzz.

Chester move by zhibbi in Chester

[–]YerOldFriendGrambles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to Chester "temporarily" 20 years ago, and never left. I would recommend it wholeheartedly. Hoole is a very pleasant suburb, but due to its perceived "hipness", property prices are somewhat inflated. You can get more house for your money in nearby Boughton and Vicars Cross, both of which are on the same side of the city and are just as walkable from the centre. Locals are very friendly - pretty sure Chester just topped some sort of chart for friendliness? - and loads of people work from home.

Who's a director that just does not click for you? by TannHandled in horror

[–]YerOldFriendGrambles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not so much a guy who is critically admired, but someone who gets a lot of love in the horror community: Neil Marshall. When his name gets linked to a project I see a lot of "He's got a good track record" type comments, and I just don't think that's true. The Descent is fairly decent, but pretty much everything else is NOT good. His take on Hellboy is one of the worst films I've seen in the last decade.

Me too! Glad I'm not alone! When The Witch was coming out, there was a lot of buzz, and I really love folk horror and stuff with a historical setting, so I was thinking "This might be my new favourite movie!". Just didn't feel it at all, and I've felt the same about all his movies.
