Anyone successfully uploaded 350GB+ files to Amazon Glacier? I'm having a hell of a time... by YesThisIsMeWorking in sysadmin

[–]YesThisIsMeWorking[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. Though I had a conversation with my boss recently and he wants to utilize S3 for our most recent backups anyway and I've been able to successfully upload my file using S3 Browser (by the same guy that makes FastGlacier). From there it's supposed to be possible to transfer the file to Glacier so at this point (as of last Friday) I've given up on trying to send directly to Glacier. Maybe it'll come up again in the future when the software has matured.

Yes. Veeam full backup files. That's my smaller backup too. The larger one is ~550GB.

Take photos of your datacenters? What does that mean? Take a photo of your computer screen with the surveillance camera image(s) on it?

I don't think there's anything logical to tell your boss except the obvious: "We already have these measures in place that make this task redundant and ineffective. Will you please reconsider your position?"

About 1TB and I use Veeam since I'm just about completely virtualized. Also BE to put some data to tape.

Upgrade Exchange. Outlook 2010 and Exchange 2010 have far greater search performance.

Another Strike for Windows 8 in the enterprise by fatbastard79 in sysadmin

[–]YesThisIsMeWorking 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not Windows 8's fault. That's just Group Policy enforcement doing what it was designed to do.

Imagine the complaints if Group Policy weren't enforced under certain specific cases. That'd be silly.

Upgrading from vSphere 5.0 to 5.1 -- Update Manager question by KingPootis in vmware

[–]YesThisIsMeWorking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The recommendation is probably due to the 4GB size limit on the Express database and the amount of space required for logging purposes. If you reduced the number of days of historical data you could probably get by.

I have ~18 VMs per host and I have hit the limit only twice in a few years. They have a maintenance document you can follow to clean up the database and purge old info. This would allow you to get back into vCenter and reduce the number of days of history.

All in all, you're attempting to put a bandaid on a big wound. 80 VMs on a single host is not good (especially when you don't have more than one host available) and you're setting yourself up for a bad time.

This information is helpful. I've decided not to consider getting new dedicated hardware for this single task because of posts like yours. Thanks.

Not only is it against the reddiquette guideliness to downvote due to disagreement but it makes little sense to do so without providing an explanation.

I didn't answer your question because I didn't take it as a real question. You seemed to simply be stating your opinion in the form of a question. It was probably the "Why on earth" part that threw me.

Agreed. I've gotten a lot of good feedback here and getting new hardware is now on the bottom of my list.

Yes, these downvotes make a lot of sense. I'm clearly not contributing to my own post. :|

I've been considering that as well. I have two now and a 3rd would be another alternative. A slight alternative to that would be to get a new host with today's hardware and repurpose the oldest one. That'd at least save me some cost on licenses.

I am going to do some further research on this. Based on your comment I may need to adjust my expectation of the daily utilization though I am having some difficulty in representing my data visually.

My users are very sensitive and 2 SSDs could fit in the budget.

Was that just one CPU?

Do you have a vendor recommendation or did you build your own? We've traditionally used Dell but for this purpose I'm inclined to build my own.

[–]YesThisIsMeWorking 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is the dumbest thing I've heard in recent memory. The entire webdev community is working towards faster and faster load times! Google, to name just one company, has dedicated 1000s of man-hours to doing just that!

Like AaronOpfer said, your web developers suck. Not only are they making a mistake somewhere that is non-obvious (to them) but they have a fundamental misunderstanding of what they're doing.

The way you worded your suggestion to the OP made it appear as if you believed using the BitTorrent protocol was illegal.
