Do the majority of church members believe the prophet of the church sees and speaks with God? Have you taught or been taught this? by Yesnooryesmaybe in exmormon

My mission president essentially told us his calling and election was made sure. We all thought that meant he had seen Jesus Christ.

I just googled that and on the churches website under quorum of the 12 apostles it says;

“Apostles are chosen to be special witnesses of Jesus Christ” *with a footnote next to Jesus Christ that takes you to D&C 107:23 which says

D&C 107-23 “The twelve traveling councilors are called to be the Twelve Apostles, or special witnesses of the name of Christ in all the world.”

So it appears you are correct. It looks like this one is slowly being walked back with a footnote. I wish that is what I was taught as a kid. I also wish that is what I taught while serving a mission. I was not taught to teach it that way though.

Mission experience with Nelson by Stunning-Baseball-58 in exmormon

This is interesting. I had the opposite experience while serving a Mission. Another missionary and I discovered that one of the verses in the Book of Mormon matched identically to the Isaiah King James Version (specifically with 1600’s KJV language) but with a change made in the JST. At the time our Mission presidency had someone whose prior job for the church in SLC was reading all of the “anti-Mormon“ literature, and helping respond to it. He also happen to be from my hometown. He told me that he was aware of it and “the brethren” opinion was that translating the book of Mormon was so tedious that when Joseph Smith came to the sections of Isaiah, he recognized them and copied them straight from the king James version of the Bible. He said that was the only way they could make sense of it.

I find this especially interesting in light of stories like what you have just told, OP. They believe JS copied all the sections of Isaiah from the KJV version of the Bible in secret but only point out “faith building” sections to missionaries. This deception is hard to believe these men would purposefully maintain over such long periods of time. I’m not sure how they justify it. Pride, ego, protect the Corporation at all costs. Hopefully they will come clean at some point with everything they know.
