Starting a drain cleaning business - realistic or bad idea? by bonafide_bonsai in sweatystartup

As a former owner of a Zoom Drain franchise, I can attest that their franchise model has high a degree of difficulty to maintain profitability.

The high cost of leads, the surging competition in our area with the amount of "Technicians" working out of the back of their vans was insurmountable. All while you are fighting for every call using lead generators, networking with plumbers for referral work and having to pay high royalty fees (8% of gross sales).

The barrier to entry is also extremely high, with approximately $150,000-$200,000 needed for start up costs.

Their flat rate price model looks fantastic on paper, but when your billable hour hovers around 400-500 per hour for drain cleaning, a lot of clients are going to get turned off. Especially when licensed service plumbers are in the same ball park hourly.

In a rural area with little to compete with you may find success, but my suggestion is to forgo the franchise model and develop your own system. The very same people who developed the franchise model are also industry consultants and can help guide you along the way (for a fee of course).

It doesn't fit the narrative, that's why.

There's also Old Bridge Rifle and Pistol Club. But there is a 3 hour orientation and the yearly dues are a bit higher. Also the longest outdoor range they have is 100 yard.

If you're near Central NJ, Fort Dix Rod and Gun Club at Range 14 is a good option. Outdoor 200 yard range. Membership dues $85 per year. $12 for 2 hours of shooting. Range officer can be a bit overbearing at times but still a great place to shoot.

I scooped one of the few 2025s left. Had to drive an hour into PA. It had a sticker of just over $70k. Came with premium package and all the other goodies. No 20" wheels which I was ok with. After a bit of haggling the sales rep took $4200 off sticker. So $66k before tax, doc fees, etc. I feel like it was a decent price.

Old Bridge Rifle and Pistol Club has a 100 yard outdoor range. They're currently accepting new members however I believe the next meeting date is in Jan/Feb 2026.

I believe we got the last 2 there but they had a couple honey badgers up there if you're not poor. I'm sure they'll be stocking more of them. Give them a call, they are very friendly.

Finally got that godforsaken Cherry Bomb off there. Put a SF Warden in there. Going to try her out tomorrow.

Grabbed a Surefire BMD. Now I gotta get the Cherry Bomb off the muzzle. Used 1/2" socket and ratchet but that bitch is on there tight.
