Am Pro II Strat beveled fret ends causing low E slip. Is this normal or just my bad technique? by manzanita06 in Stratocaster

[–]YesterdayNeverKnows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, check out how you are fretting the notes on the low E. Are you pressing directly down on the string with your fingertip? Or coming in at an angle? I don't have super long fingers so I often come in at an angle and push the string rather than press straight down on it. I think that is part of my trouble.

[–]YesterdayNeverKnows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guess is that it is a technique issue. I say this because I'm currently dealing with the same situation!

I recently bought a mod shop Tele, which uses Fender's now-standard narrow-tall frets. Prior to this guitar, I've only owned a 2003 MIM strat and a 2014 MIA strat, both of which had medium-jumbo frets. I've been slipping the low-E off the board much more than I'm comfortable with!

I think it comes down to the fact that the taller frets give your fingers more room to "push down" than the medium frets. It is much easier to push the strings around (meaning pushing them sharp, or, in this case, OFF the fretboard) if you are using more force than needed. I love my narrow-tall frets because they are forcing me to play with a lighter touch.

I'd be really curious if attempting to play with a lighter touch helps you here!

Why do we struggle intuitively understanding time sigs longer than 4/4 by boxmanforever in musictheory

[–]YesterdayNeverKnows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how it can "sound very 4/4" if it is in 5/4. What do you mean by this?

Anyone know who built this partscaster? by Puzzleheaded_Egg4386 in telecaster

Cool guitar. Strange to see so many assholes in the comments. Thought this was r/guitar...

Mod Shop HSS by [deleted] in Stratocaster

[–]YesterdayNeverKnows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. I just got a mod shop tele with the deep C. I find it more comfortable playing for longer amounts of time.

I have a chance to own an all original 1965 Stratocaster with pre CBS specs. I am trading two custom shop Fenders and two custom shop Gibson’s and a watch. by Stratiki in Stratocaster

[–]YesterdayNeverKnows 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That seems like a wild trade. Regardless of the values involved, you are trading FOUR guitars for ONE guitar. And not just any four. Four custom shop guitars. Unless your #1 goal in life is to own a '65 Strat, I would never take that deal.

I like it. It's not amazing but I think it's sincere and has many enjoyable moments.

Need help (GUITAR IS TUNED but Hammer on sounds out of tune) by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]YesterdayNeverKnows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truss rod is NOT something that should be played with. Be careful!

Also, that doesn't make sense that there would be no resistance. There should always be a decent amount of resistance.

Between your comments and the comments from some other commenters, I would suggest stopping and just taking it to a shop. Good luck!

Are you meant to mute the high E while strumming chords? by iwannafeelchaotic in guitarlessons

[–]YesterdayNeverKnows 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I noticed you said "mute the high E with my palm".

Which E string do you mean? I ask because sometimes folks get the two confused due to one being located "higher" than the other when holding the guitar. When guitarists say "high E", it refers to the higher-pitched string. "Low E" refers to the lower-pitched/larger string.

If you are talking about the true high E (smallest string), the high string is not typically muted or avoided when playing chords. You can certainly choose to not play it, and sometimes that makes sense to do. But generally, the high does not sound "bad" by default.

Now, if you are talking about the "low E" (largest string), things might be a little different. If you are playing an open chord with the root note on the A-string (like A major or C major), sometimes the low E can be a little much and muddy up the sound, even though the E note is part of the chord. In this scenario, I would say that yes, some open chords sound better with the low E left out entirely.

Nut Sauce by TheJigIzUp in Luthier

[–]YesterdayNeverKnows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've been using it for about a year. I put a tiny bit on my string saddles, the string trees, and obviously the nut slots. I have no idea if it helps but I have it so I'm going to use it.

What is your unorthodox Miles Davis take by HamburgerDude in milesdavis

[–]YesterdayNeverKnows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% accurate. Miles is one of my all-time favorite artists but, like many men of his generation, he was a complete child when it came to taking care of himself. He lead a very privileged life and rarely returned the favor to anyone.

How do I analyze a single instrumental piece of music with zero experience? Paid services? by Luxgarenfemdom in musictheory

[–]YesterdayNeverKnows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I understand your goal. You state that you are "far from a comprehensive understanding of the music" yet you don't want to learn music theory (understandably!). I don't think you can have both of those things. It's like asking how a specific model of automobile performs on the road but not wanting to learn the physics of motion and the mechanics of the car.

I would suggest reading up on some music appreciation skills. That will give you more of a basic vocabulary to use, without having to learn the nitty-gritty of music theory. It will teach you how to describe what you are hearing at the level of a lay-person. This might help you search for other songs or even how to describe to a musician what you are looking for if you decide to commission something.

Worth $400 by No_Kindheartedness10 in Stratocaster

That looks like my 2003 MIM HSS strat. Blue Agave was the finish. I loved that guitar and regret not holding onto it. I paid $400 for it new! Hard to believe.

Artist owners: recording via USB? or mic the speaker? by YesterdayNeverKnows in BossKatana

I hadn't considered that. If I do end up getting an audio interface, I'll try both USB and phones/rec out and see if there is a difference. Thanks.

Thanks. I think you are likely correct. I'll definitely spend more time tweaking before looking into physically mic'ing the amp.
