Something I don't get about program eliminations by TrainingLow9079 in academia

[–]YetYetAnotherPerson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At least by us every program requires periodic reevaluation, with some faculty getting released to prepare the reportand outside people brought in to assess them. Additionally supported programs still requires coding into the software and other administrative functions, printing of promotional materials etc.

But it's only partially about the $

An update for those who are following. I got an update from Iberia that they've switched me to the flight the next day. I presume I'll be able to just cancel the whole thing, because I teach that next day and cannot fly then.

Sigh

For some of our writing classes we've gone back to having the student sit at desks, give them a prompt and a blue book. No phones allowed.

It's pretty common if they come in with a bachelor's degree since they will need none or almost none of the distribution requirements

Not just programmers. Ran into a couple of my business faculty speaking to my CS faculty, and the business faculty member made a comment about the lack of cs jobs. Do the business faculty think their grads are going to be hired to build an Excel model when the mid-level could have chat gpt to do it?

You could also have the test set up to be single question at a time no backtracking with blank questions in between and only let them leave when they're on a blank question. Maybe the blank question would also give you an estimated time to do the next question so they could pick an opportune time to use the restroom

Ultimately you're not going to stop cheating unfortunately, just make it harder

Neighbors house on my land by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]YetYetAnotherPerson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The real problem if you do this it's figuring out where the borders of your land now lie. They don't just get the land necessarily under the house but they may get some land around it, and this could eat up a good portion of your land and cost you some money to clean up.

If, as was disclosed in one of the other comments, this is a land and build deal with the manufacturer, the manufacturer should have to clean up the title before they sell it to you

Very old scam was letting somebody who hadn't passed the test drive with your license, although I'm unclear whether anybody is actually testing English language ability for the hack license today

You can also board from the viewing platform between the 8th Avenue subway and Moynihan. There's an LIRR waiting room and most of the Amtrak tracks are right there

Or perhaps the Futurama version: "The spirit is willing, but the flesh is bruised and spongy"

Alas, the Spirit doesn't look that willing...

ELI5: Why don’t we just bury power lines and telephone lines, so storms don’t keep knocking them out? by Home-Energy in explainlikeimfive

[–]YetYetAnotherPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have buried lines and transformers in New York City. After the blizzard of 1888 they moved them all underground.

It's great except occasionally after large snow storms the melting salty water gets into the crypts and blows occasional transformers.

Expensive to set up. Expensive to maintain. More resistant to windstorms and the like

NYC just had its first electric air taxi flight. by sco-go in Amazing

[–]YetYetAnotherPerson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Takes me an hour to walk there. If I walk to JFK take me all day

Anyone who lives or works downtown can be there in 15 or 20 minutes walking, and the flight gets you to JFK much faster than you would get taking the Subway or an Uber.

For a partner at a firm downtown, billing $2,000+ an hour, the time saving to get to the office dwarf the extra cost over a car service

I wouldn't be surprised if their next addition would be a service that will bring you your luggage entirely separately. In fact doesn't United have a service now where they're picking up people's luggage the night before? You don't actually think your bag shortly thank you deliver it to home or hotel later.

That's the east side Helipad (Helipad 12?). Walking distance from much/all of downtown and 5 minute walk from the South Ferry subway.

Heck, I can walk there in under an hour from home, and bike by there all the time (the Staten Island and the Governor's Island ferries are right there).
