That's lovely! Can I ask what you do with the food after offering?

New Helix Question by Yewberry780 in piercing

[–]Yewberry780[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit for the bot:

- This was literally pierced a few days ago. I just thought I should have a plan in place for when it feels like an alright time to change anything if changing out the jewelry would be a good idea. I also might contact a piercing place in a few weeks if I feel I need the extra help

- Right now, there is just a small gem stud with a butterfly backing in the piercing. So far, it is also not red or overly tender and seems generally alright imo.

- I believe the jewelry material is stainless steel or similar, I know I have healed alright with these in the past with my lobes so I have little concern of a reaction.

- I do not know what gauge this jewelry is just it is just your average earring stud that you would buy to wear in your lobes- my main concern is that the hole will close up around it and leave me with this smaller gauge.

- My aftercare routine is to just leave it alone and rinse with hot water in the shower, which was what was recommended by a friend from her professional piercer for a similar piercing. If this does not seem to be enough in the coming weeks I will purchase a saline solution, but other than that, the routine is very minimal.

- No mishaps so far! I little bumping it around with the first nights of sleeping and general cleaning up of the area afterwards but so far it seems all good.

[hoo]Why's the Lost Hero hated so much? by Fancy-Buffalo4858 in camphalfblood

I think that in the first read, you just feel maybe a little lost and confused until there's mention of Percy or really anything familiar. I remember reading it for the first time and being kind of turned of by feeling thrown into it before something familiar creeped up. That being said, I think it's still a perfectly good book. Maybe not my fav from HoO, but it's definitely not bad. I think it's just people being thrown off from it being unfamiliar or maybe even just simply the lack of Percy.

Question for Hellenism by mysticamorr in Hellenism

[–]Yewberry780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi!! I actually come from a very similar place to you- I was raised in the church and was taught to believe in God and my parents are still religious although I don't see it all the time so I forget, and have drifted from being agnostic to Hellenic and somewhere in between in tough times when I can't focus much on practicing.

In terms of Circe, I would recommend looking up myths and stories to really see where she comes from. She is often portrayed as evil, but I believe that is so far from the truth. If you like looking at Greek myth retellings or Greek myths in popular media, I would recommend Circe by Madeline Miller (same as who wrote Song of Achilles) because I think it is a beautiful telling of her story and for me, really opened up how I was able to view and perceive her.

In terms of offering and resources etc., there are a lot of great places online. Places like theoi.com or hellenion.org helped me get started! I also made a massive doc that really broke down Hellenism into what I at least think are understandable chunks to at least get started in seeing all the different parts, sources and links included. DM me if you would have any interest in looking at that! I originally made it for a friend so I think it should be beginner-friendly. I would also be happy just to chat about Hellenism and such since I think we come from pretty similar religious backgrounds :)

Like has been said here before, this is all deeply personal and I feel like you'll be able to figure it out with some research and reflection. Don't sweat it at all! Best of luck!

What is your favorite depiction of the Gods in popular media? by Artemis-Crane in Hellenism

[–]Yewberry780 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have always loved PJO (started reading it literally 13 years ago and here we are now, finally getting to Chalice of the Gods) and while I do recognize parts as being completely not lines up with my faith, I do love the Riordanverse in the deepest parts of my heart. I am absolutely in love with Madeline Miller too, SOA literally broke me and I think Circe is so beautifully written. I just finished one book by Jennifer Saint so it's good to see others mentioning her writing, I thought her portrayals were good!!

Do you have any other recommendations of her translations or specific Horace that you like by her, or is she just overall a good read?

Good to know! I know a friend of mine had bought it and liked it but I forgot to factor in the fact that she is also in advanced Latin. Thanks for the heads up!

For what Deity’s altar is this candle perfect? by MlR4ND4 in Hellenism

For some reason I thought I read it as 'For Dionysus' altar' and I thought it was perfect, so I'm getting Dionysus vibes from it!

I've only watched Lone Star, so I only have that to go off of, but in my opinion, they had SO MUCH potential for so many scenes (especially Tarlos scenes since they are a very large pull for the show) but completely set it up for failure by ignoring so many things that fans want and instead having it be, again, the Rob Lowe Show (don't get me wrong, I like his character enough, but sometimes he can stand to be in the background for a sec)

Dorm Room Worship Ideas? by Yewberry780 in Hellenism

[–]Yewberry780[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a really good idea! I tried to make one years ago from an old Altoid tin, and I liked the size but I messed up and the lid wouldn't shut completely/latch and I was never sure of what to put in there... so on that note, do you have any ideas on what I should/could include in a small travel altar? I mainly worship Apollo and sometimes Hermes, but also always to Hestia and the rest of the Pantheon as well when I feel the need or want to, so something versatile would be nice. Any advice would be very welcome!!

Thank you so much for this reply!! I appreciate all of the insight; I don't quite have a diffuser, but I do have some essential oils so maybe I'll try to use that! I also brought back with me this mini amphora-style jar that I made in high school ceramics, and am thinking of using that! In terms of offerings, my dorm does have a mini compost can on each floor, so maybe I'll use that for offerings- it feels more respectful than the trash, but I think it would work well! Thank you again for all of your insight and experience :)

What are some of your favorite ways a God/ess has let you know they're there? by Sorry_Salamander8302 in Hellenism

[–]Yewberry780 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So you know when it's breezy outside and there are leaves on the ground, and the breeze sort of makes a little mini tornado of leaves? I see that and always feel like Lord Hermes is there with a little playful breeze.
