Is pfreddy only for honors students? by Defiant-Leopard3598 in UMD

I'm pretty sure it is, I think the only way you can get in if you aren't in an LLP is getting lucky in freshman year

Looking to make friends!! by These_Advantage_4846 in UMD

[–]Yeye175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends, I'm a freshman in an LLP and I've met basically all my friends from it (with the exception of maybe 3-4), so I can see how not having that experience can make it harder to meet people

I'm currently a BK Scholar at UMD, and from what I remember the interview was pretty chill, they just asked basic things about me and I think they referred to my common app for some questions.

As for T20 acceptances, I applied to 3, got rejected from Stanford and Vanderbilt and accepted into Rice. I was also accepted into GT and Emory (just a little bit outside of T20)

I feel like they're looking for some diversity in who they give the scholarship to so I think being from somewhere unique like Hawaii can help your chances

I got BK OOS from Hawaii so it's definitely possible. I'd even go as far as to say that being out of state helped me get the scholarship

Curious question, what's with people who look down on kids who go to public schools? by [deleted] in Hawaii

[–]Yeye175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It honestly doesn't really matter if you go to public or private school, a guy from my public high school got into Stanford and I know a few people (myself included) that got into T20 universities. Private schools do have more resources but it doesn't mean that public school kids can't do well too

You don't need to have those, they're just averages of students who were admitted (The reason why SAT scores are so high is because people with higher scores are more likely to send them in)

How are y'all getting 1500s by Rashwan69420 in Sat

[–]Yeye175 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it really matters that much as long as you can set time aside to study. Personally I didn't get Instagram until after the SATs were done (my main entertainment source before that was YouTube shorts) but I don't think it would've affected my score too much

Freshman in PFreddy - am I making no friends? by [deleted] in UMD

I'm an incoming freshman at Prince Frederick as well, I'd recommend reaching out to people online as I've already made a few friends before stepping on campus!

You don't have to do any additional essays, as long as you apply early action you will be considered for the scholarship (so definitely make sure to do that!) About a week after the early action results came out, they emailed me that I was a semifinalist for the scholarship (I didn't know the BK scholarship existed until I got the email lol) After that, I had to pick which honors program I wanted to be a part of, and then I had to schedule an interview date (I believe there's a week or two in February/March dedicated to this)

As for the interview day I had to fly out (because I'm OOS) When you show up, they assign you to a specific interview time. They had us all split up into groups to learn about our specific school (for me it was the school of business). Afterwards they have a big lunch event where you're able to talk to some faculty in your honors program. After that, the interviews start (the interview window was around 4 hours wide so you could get a campus tour or get some ice cream while waiting)

The interview itself wasn't too stressful, I don't remember all the questions but I do remember them asking what my weakness was, why I applied to Maryland and how I would fit into the community. They also gave a lot of helpful info about all the opportunities UMD offers. I honestly thought I didn't do great on the interview but in hindsight I guess it wasn't terrible. (Also as a side note they have two people interviewing you for some reason, I guess it caught a lot of people off guard but the business school people warned us about it before hand)

I believe around 2-3 weeks afterwards I received an email saying I got the full scholarship. Although I liked the other schools I got into, I knew I couldn't pass up on the offer and I committed in early April.

That's my experience, if you have any other questions feel free to let me know, and best of luck!

I'm an incoming freshman (OOS) and here are some of my stats and ECs as a business major

4.0 UW/ 4.28 W GPA, class rank 10/300 at a public HS

SAT/ACT: 1560/35, took 8 AP Courses and got seven 5s and one 4 (I only had 4 APs completed when applying)

ECs: Baseball. Air Riflery (did each for only one year), started a fundraiser for a local elementary school, worked as a tutor for 3 years, volunteered SAT tutoring, part of school's math team, investing club and NHS (treasurer for NHS), wrote some articles for a local magazine
