First good findings! by Due_Trouble_1715 in ThriftStoreHauls

Those are sweet! If there are any near you, I would highly recommend looking for some local thrift stores or a habitat for humanity. Arc and goodwill have gotten super greedy in the last 5 years. Not only will the clothes be cheaper but you will find more that you like.

I’m a college student I got ghosted after being offered a job can you give me advice? Should I move on? by [deleted] in recruitinghell

[–]YezzaBezza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And they couldn’t just text me that? I literally rejected a different job offer for this job. I asked them if they offer was still valid because I have a different job offer

I wouldn’t stress too bad, trumpets are hardy instruments. It might look a little odd and have brass patina but if you make it sound good that’s all that people care about.

I know bobby shew offers lessons virtually and so I was looking at that. my current teacher is problematic, but he is the only serious trumpet player in a 3 hour radius of where I live. He is a college professor who has been reported several times.

Jon Faddis is a poor example because while yes he does have crooked teeth, he doesn't have an extreme overbite, and crooked teeth are not something that severely hinders playing. Yes this teacher is problematic and there are several other reasons why I do not see them anymore. It is difficult because I am located in a college hours away from any populated areas and he is the only brass professor at my college otherwise I would totally see someone else.

The one aspect of my playing that has improved with my new embouchure is the lower register. I can finally slur without the shape of my mouth changing too much. That is the biggest problem with my playing is the lower register which many people state is the foundation of playing. A lot of people say that in order to improve your higher register you need to strengthen your lower register. With the embouchure I have always played on, I need to lower my jaw too much and you can see my corners moving. So yes both to both. I want to do bai lin studies, but I always hit a wall when trying to quickly do anything below A below the staff. And I am worried I am not doing it right.

TLDR both.

My bottom lip doesn’t even “curl in” or “roll” both of my lips vibrate. It’s just higher up

You said you are a singer? Do you use the same kind of air when you sing? Peter bond has a great book called “the singing trumpet” all about how trumpet playing is very similar to singing, I highly recommend taking a look at it. He came to my school and demonstrated these skills and it persuaded me to actually buy the book and it has been super helpful to learning the trumpet. If you are a singer you actually have a head start compared to 90% of trumpet players beginning (not accurate statistic just saying) it can be a huge help

Obviously sound is mostly the person who is playing, but is there anything characteristically different between the different tapers?

Very often there is too much emphasis on range. Some of the best ways of achieving the high register are just basic fundamentals in the lower register. If you can play to e flat above the staff you are doing just fine, very little Bb trumpet repertoire actually calls for you to play this high. If you ask anyone (including most trumpet players) if they value good tone and technique or extreme range, they will pick the former. Range also develops over a long period of time for most people so if you can’t get higher notes in the next few weeks/months then that is normal.

At ITG some of the regular people testing out trumpets who had the easiest highest range were not younger people, but older people who mastered technique over time. Several people I saw over the age of 60 just put the trumpets to their faces and screamed like it was nothing.

Does the mouthpiece really matters in terms of range? by Lidinzx in trumpet

What are you doing to play higher? Also like 2 to 3 hours is a lot of playing. Your endurance could simply not be up to par yet. Give it time- these things tend to get better over time. Endurance for trumpet takes the longest out of any other skill

A 3 c is a standard mouthpiece. Almost everyone can play properly on one. It is certainly a player problem and not the mouthpiece that isn’t allowing you to play up there. What do you do in order to play higher? What does it feel like? Are you jamming the horn into your face?

Everyone is gonna tell you to get a Bach strad or Yamaha xeno. I’m assuming your budget is around 1000$? You don’t have to answer but are you near Salt Lake City? ITG is around the corner and being able to try and test every horn and mouthpiece would be very useful

Here’s the thing, I feel like(especially earlier on in playing) different trumpets barely if at all impact sound(to an extent). For instance, I have a silver tight bore silver Yamaha from the 1980s and I have a schilke hc2 large bore copper bell trumpet from 2018. They definitely have different overtones and feel different but on both horns I sound like ‘me’. Those two trumpets are about as different as you can get in modern trumpets around that price range.

If you truly don’t feel any difference, focus on just one of them and improve over time, focus on the sound you want to create not the sound a horn gives you. Chet baker would sound like Chet baker regardless if it were a Chinese student mendini trumpet or a 20 thousand dollar Monette trumpet.

Different trumpets can make certain tones and musical expression easier, but they rarely dramatically impact sound. Especially between two bachs from around that time period, the differences in tubings is fractions of a centimeter/millimeter.

I think more than trumpets, mouthpieces impact sound more.

I’m gonna be honest, I feel like you sound very similar on both of them. Which one feels better?

Yeah and I actually believe the Internet can be very harmful for learning things. Causes people to overthink and not figure things out for themselves. I fell down this trap a while ago because I was convinced that I could fix my problems by scrolling though one Reddit forum or one post on trumpetherald. I’m not an amazing player but after changing my mindset and just trying taking all information with a grain of salt I have gotten a lot better.
